1. Bigotry
Paul ,   London England   (07.17.07)
This is no better and no worse than banning the sale of kosher products would be elsewhere. Thankfully, despite rampant antisemitism in many parts of England, our standards have not yet reached such a depth ofdepravity. A sad day for all decent Israelis who should reverse this silliness before it is too late.
2. It's time to leave Russia behind
daniel ,   helsinki   (07.17.07)
I find it a disgrace that Jews who immigrate to Israel bring the bad parts of their "old countries" to it. These people are welcome to become Israelis but I don't want to see Israel become some Russian settlement. Giving up pork is quite easy. It's nothing amazing either. I'd take lamb or beef any day. I mean, some respect. These people who oppose this "bylaw" have none.
3. Israel devoid of Torah and Mitzvot can not survive

That is the CUTEST thing ever!!! What an adorable little piglet!!!!
5. To Daniel #2: PLEASE LEAVE THE FREE WORLD AND MOVE TO IRAN
Lev ,   Israel   (07.17.07)
The point here is religious freedom. I am an American Jew and I do not believe in or respect the kosher laws. I see them as an unnecessary and primitive anachronism that debases the spiritual essence of Judaism. If you want to be kosher, by all means. But do not force your silly and simplistic interpretations of the Jewish faith onto me or anyone else! If you cannot live with your neighbor eating pork, I suggest you move to Iran where the Halal laws are enforced by the government in the way you and the Mayor of Netanya seem to desire. Until then, Israel is still a free and enlightened country.
6. Let people eat what they want!
DkS ,   PT, Israel   (07.17.07)
As somebody who buys only kosher products himself, I say that nobody is forcing anybody to buy these pork products. Most of Israel's supermarkets and minimarkets are kosher so there's plenty of choice for everybody. But of course, the moment a minority of religious extremists (i.e. Haredim) start screaming about something which is not to their liking, a ban has to be imposed on it, no matter the number of people who are affected by such a ban and don't want their way of life to be controlled by religious coercion. This is the mentality in Israel, the country it has become and we continue and continue on this slippery slope until we'll turn into some kind of Jewish Taliban-state. I can already imagine the large number of posts which will scream out that "we are a Jewish state and therefore we have to live as Jews and everything has to be run according to Halacha". I say to those people: no matter how religious you are, you wouldn't want to live in such a country because it would be a place impossible to live in. Live and let live! There's enough space and opportunities for everybody. Concern yourself with your own business and not with somebody else's eating habits. Don't people have better things to do with their lives? Apparently not.
7. Get rid of pork..........
Mike Carmel ,   Rishon le Zion   (07.17.07)
....... once and for all. Let the goyim eat it. It's disgusting.
8. Eeeeeeeeyou ! but then the baby pig looks cute : -) ~
ben ,   singapore   (07.17.07)
And why there is market for pork in a torah land ? Explain ! how many migrants to Israel would die if they dont eat pork. How many are reforms ? The primodial man give instruction not to eat from that tree, now the instruction is not to eat pork. Now that is exactly they want to do Eat the forbidden meat. Anyway the pig on the photo looks cute.
9. #5 DO NOT FORCE YOUR VIEWS ON ME OR ANYONE ELSE
IF YOU WANT PORK ,   GO TO ROME........D9   (07.17.07)
10. Yasher Koach
Baruch ,   Boston, USA   (07.17.07)
Israel needs to preserve the Jewish nature of the country. And even Moslems, the largest minority in the country, don't eat pork. The Russians who want it probably entered Israel under false pretenses anyway. In the US, we can't buy dog meat or horse meat for human consumption, even though it is sold in other countries. I think we survive quite well without it. The Russians can survive quite well without pork.
11. Welcome to Netanya...
Adam Admati ,   Netanya, Israel   (07.17.07)
city full of bigots and primitives. All the Russians living here do not pretend to be jewish, BUT THEY DO MOST OF THE WORKING, renting and tax-paying, and they do more than their part of IDF service. I did not come on Aliyah to be part of a theocracy.
12. In a related story...
Adam Admati ,   Netanya, Israel   (07.17.07)
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/15/us/15officer.html?fta=y A second Russian NYPD officer died. It is quite likely that this family could just as easily come on Aliyah. Wouldn't it be great to know more about the morons on Netanya's city council... their peccadillos, dirty secrets and bribes. I would rather Israel outlaw the histadrut before outlawing the sale of pork!
13. OK, not Tuesdays....but there are another 6 days in the week
Danielle ,   centre   (07.17.07)
14. This is a Jewish State is it not?
S Judah ,   London   (07.17.07)
So those who live in Israel need to respect and place Jewish Traditions above their own personal short commings if they are Jewish. If they are not Jewish , well bend so that you don't upset those that are.
15. Better to ban "pork" in Knesset legislation.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (07.17.07)
A lot of legislation in the Knesset is less kosher than the pork sold in these stores, the chief beneficiaries of all this treif being the haredim. So let's make a deal - when all the pork is removed from the Knesset, we can remove pork from the stores. That's a fair deal, isn't it?
16. #4 You are so right!
Frankie   (07.17.07)
That is the cutest thing ever. How could anyone not want to eat it?
17. to lev #5
ash ,   gush etzion   (07.17.07)
primitive anachronism, simplistic interpretations??? just what are yur interpretations of the kosher laws in the Torah? your 'judaism' as 'spiritual' as you think it is, is simply not judaism it is what you feel is correct according to your 'moral' code. this is highly egotistical as you are actually creating a 'levism'. without the ha;lacha there is no difference between judaism and anything else. your judaism without our laws is basically shutting your eyes and feeling spiritual in the most arrogant and selfish manner. this is the opposite of spiritual as it only a matter of what you feel is your norm and not taking G-ds will into consideration. judaism can make you feel sick, uncomfortable, etc, but you cant make it all up and call it judaism because it makes you feel better about yourself. these laws are above someone who is simplistic, arrogant and selfish. they are to be understood on greater levels and they have kept us as a people for millenia. for that alone we owe them a great debt of gratitude. your impudence says it all!
18. Re: 5.
Yosef   (07.17.07)
Lev, you seem to have a lot of anti-religious anger. I agree that religion shouldn't be enforced upon all, but I feel very strongly that the Jewish flavor of the law should be promoted if we're to remain a Jewish State. For years, it was illegal to farm pigs in Israel, only in the last decade was this process legalized. Banning pork isn't about forcing judaism on all. It's about respect for where we came from.
19. #1 - What a stupid comparison.....
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (07.17.07)
I am all in favor of freedom, and I am not even sure I am in favor of this new ordinance, but it certainly is not bigotry. You Israel haters sure do love to toss that bullshit at us. Don't compare banning Kosher products, which is required by Jewish orthodoxy and without it some people can't eat anything, to banning pork which is required by nothing. Its just a stupid comparison.
20. Stop religious coercion!!!
Barron ,   Israel   (07.17.07)
If the religious don't want pork , they don't have to shop there. If they don't want to shop on Shabbat, then they should stay home. Leave the majority to make choices for themselves.
21. 5:Dear Lev , what on earth are you talking about?
S Judah ,   London   (07.17.07)
You claim to be Jewish and perhaps halachically you are. But your comment suggest that you are sadly totally devoid of any Jewish and Religious knowledge or education. I don't know what terrible things have happend to you or your family to turn you this way. But I hope that there is still a Jewish spark in your neshama and perhaps this Tish Avab you will find your way to the Wall and understand what you (and we) have lost and find a little bit of it again.
22. Live and Let Live!
Michael ,   Israel   (07.17.07)
I am religious, not a fanatic, what ever that is! People who come to live in Eretz Yisrael should know without Torat Yisrael, Am Yisrael has no Zcooyot to live in this (Pikadon) deposit called Eretz Yisrael!! People no matter where ever they come from, Russia, Thailand,America or Lapland, should know non-kosher meat especially the type mentioned here IS FORBIDDEN! If we want Hashem to bless this country we call home, let's be deserving of it! If we want more & more problems, be them security, moral, social, economic, political etc, then fine lets allow everything that the goyim want here and not complain afterward why terror and lack of moral values are rampage here. Please Goyim and those that want to live like Goyim want to live here, live by Jewish Rules, and yes perhaps thenwe can....Live and let us all live!!!
23. Live and let live, don't eat pork in Israel, Thanks
OINK OINK OINK ,   Eretz Hakodesh   (07.17.07)
24. Fire Feierberg! We're sick & tired of her.
BigE ,   Netanya, Israel   (07.17.07)
She has this imperious, holier-than-thou attitude. She tried to snatch Even Yehuda for Netanya. Always sucking up to the religious, she forced IKEA into a tax deal for not opening on Shabbat; then when all of the other shops around opened on Shabbat, she forced IKEA to stay closed (and IKEA threatened to move out of Netanya). She's poison.
25. Italy
Patrick ,   Haifa   (07.17.07)
Italy, for instance, is a Catholic country.. there isn't a law forcing Italian Jews to go to church on Good Friday though. There'd probably be complaints if the mayor of Rome passed such a by law.... D'you see my point?
26. Let them eat pork
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (07.17.07)
