31. pork should be banned in israel
Cheryl ,   Baltimore Maryland   (07.17.07)
israel is a state for jewish people and should not be serving pork. all stores should be kosher no matter what. Kosher is about spiritally what you put in your body and it should not be pork it should be kosher only.
32. I agree
Bram ,   Toronto, Canada   (07.17.07)
A law should be passed banning the sale of foods such as pork that are unable to ever be kosher. Israel is supposed to be a Jewish state, where is the Jewish identity? If you can't give up Pork or Shellfish etc then there are MANY countries that sell this where you are free to live - Canada is one. This is not forcing values on anyone, but instead protects a Jewish identity
33. #25-do u see my point
moshe ,   israel   (07.17.07)
Israel is a Jewish country...there isn't a law forcing israeli non-jews to go to synagogue on rosh hashanah. They'd probably be complaints if the mayor of jerusalem passed such a law... D'you see my point?
34. in response to # 5
David ,   London   (07.17.07)
Its amazing that you have the guts to call kosher "silly and simplistic interpretations of the Jewish faith" It is people like you who destroy Judaism from within. What is wrong with Israel having a Jewish identity? How dare you compare Israel to Iran? Do you think that your dumb interpretations of Judaism means anything - LOL LOL go stuff your face with pork and be proud of yourself!
35. #12
phillip ,   NYC USA   (07.17.07)
Not every Russian in New York is Jewish. The Police Officer that was shot is a Christian. He and his family belong to the Russian Orthodox Church. Still want his family to make Aliayah?
36. STAY KOSHER!

37. better to eat pork...
tal ,   tlv   (07.17.07)
than behave like the charedim do...like animals. what torah and moral do all of u speak about? i´m pretty sure g-d would be happier if people respect each other, love each other, care for each other (even if they eat pork, or touch money on shabbat, or go out on friday night). it is ridiculous to think that eating kosher is what makes you jew. what´s the good of eating kosher if u steal, go to prostitutes (cheating on ur wife), molest ur children or kill gays?
38. #24- " BigE"- stands for Big Emperor?, U sound like Adrianus

the MAJORITY decided sweety " Fifty percent of Netanya's City Council members are religious or traditional, which led to the passing of the bill, with only three out of 25 council members opposing it; one council member abstained " Stop the secular cohersion - enough with it !
40. #2 Thank you!!!!!!!!
Secular Jew ,   Israel   (07.17.07)
I absolutely, 100% agree with you. Pork is only a symptom of a much deeper problem - that includes Soviet-style paranoia and abuses - that will destroy us faster than Hizbollah. Look around, non-believers. To anyone not familiar with the true picture: 1. These people are NOT 'secular,' they are anti-Jewish. 2. Those claiming to be Zionists simply like the (erroneous) idea of manifest destiny. Wake up.
41. Go kill Kenny again and leave us alone.

42. Good News!
Richard ,   New York, USA   (07.17.07)
Even the Arabs wouldn't permit pork in the Holy Land. How can people calling themselves Jews permit such a thing?
43. The business of food
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.17.07)
When y'all all end up living on okra, broccoli, spinach and pomegranates, due to what science has figured out to be bad or good for you and of what one or the other religion does or doesn't approve, I am going to buy an island, surround it with shrimp, oyster, mussel and catfish farms, let it be run over with pigs, cows, chickens and whatever else makes for good eating, sit back and wait for the orders to come pouring in. Compared to M-Island, eBay will be nothing but a distant memory of some puny little mail-order outfit. How y'all come to terms with your religions and those orders will be between you and your god. I'll just count the money.
44. DO YOU REALLY THINK THEY'LL STARVE TO DEATH?
bill handel ,   brooklyn, usa   (07.17.07)
What's the big deal. Just start selling chicken or beef--much healthier than Trichinosos-laden pork!
45. # 26 Kyle

Hi Kyle, it's Mr. Sagi, remember me ? I am with you on this one all the way. Surprise surprise !!
46. #12 about the NYPD officer
Sharon ,   New York, NY   (07.17.07)
Yeah, I guess he and his family could have come to Israel on Aliyah from Belarus instead of to the States because he wasn't Jewish!! Or if he was,he was of dubious origins like so many of the Judeo-Slavic pork-eaters in Israel. Nevertheless the officer's funeral was performed at I.J. Morris --a Jewish funeral home chain in the States. I wonder if all the Russian Orthodox priests who went on TV supporting the family officiated at the I.J. Morris home funeral?? Pork in Israel is such a gross thing, but if people insist on eating it, I believe they should have the right to and have certain stores where they can buy it. Feh!
47. Pigs do not sweat out toxins like otheranimals=more risky...
(07.17.07)
to eat. Pork tastes good, but it is more likely to be toxic than other meats, so I gave it up when I tried to eat what Moses said is best to eat. It has been said in articles about New York Mayor Blumberg that he only eats pork at Chinese restaurants after he choked on a piece of pork which sent it across the room when he spit it out. The political cartoons said the Commandment for Jews is "Thou Shalt Not Eat Pork Except at Chinese Restaurants". A lot of Chinese restaurants now prepare most dishes with chicken instead of pork on request, but the pork fat in the kitchen is not kosher. Israel was established to be a Jewish State, even though a lot of Jews are atheists. Natanya has a lot of kind people I met last year at the Apropo Hotel at Sheba Chaim Medical center who invited me to see relatives in Netanya and see the shops. It is a lovely city and I thank the people there for their hospitality to an American.
48. If these goyim want pork, they should return to Russia
A Jew ,   Netanya   (07.17.07)
And if the Jews want to eat goishe food, then they should too. Leave your abominations outside of Israel: Don't bring them into the Holy land.
49. CHARLY P. tivka! :-) The world is waiting 4 your opinion !

52. RE: #46 A partial retraction
Sharon ,   New York, NY   (07.17.07)
Oops. I correct myself. Only a wake (receiving) is being held at the I.J. Morris home. The officer's funeral will be held in a church--as it should. Still, I was unaware Jewish funeral homes rented out space for non-jewish funereal functions like wakes!! Oy! If ex-soviet Olim had been properly educated in Jewish/Israeli tradition from the moment they arrived in Israel, fewer of them would still be clamoring for pork chops!
53. #25: Italy is not a country founded on the principle...
(07.17.07)
of being a homeland to the religously persecuted of a particular religion. Italy is so far from being a theocracy that abortion is allowed there even though the Vatican is in Italy.
54. Stupid Comparison - #19
Paul ,   London England   (07.17.07)
..."Required by Jewish Orthodoxy" - then let orthodox Jews choose to eat what they require and others choose to eat what they want. Only bigotry if you profess to be a decent , tolerant human being. If not, you are not a bigot but consistent in your immorality . My apologies. You really wish to ban everything not "required" by the small number of orthodox Jews? Good grief!
55. #30 is a clear call for terrorism and should be removed.

57. Only in Israel pork store with Mezuzah!
David ,   Norway   (07.17.07)
See the picture, even a supermarket stocking pork carries a Mezuzah!
58. #33 and #53
Patrick ,   Haifa   (07.17.07)
Moshe, there's little difference between then enforcing one religous rule or an other. Both would be equally shameful in my opinion... force non-jews to go to Synagogue, force non-jews to follow Kosher laws... no difference really. #53. I understand that Israel was created as a safe haven for a persecuted people. Live here safely by all means... don't force people (non-religious Jews or non Jews) to follow rules that don't apply to them. If G*d didn't want us to eat port he wouldn't have made it so tasty. To say that He doesn't want us to eat the yummiest thing that he created is to say that He made a mistake... and we all know that He doesn't do that.
59. To #57 The religious mafia requires it.
Olej Gamur ,   Netanya, Israel   (07.17.07)
One cannot get electricity or water, or permission to open a business without a visit from the rabbinic authority which REQUIRES a large cash payment essentially to rent the mezzuzah... the rabbis keep visiting to inspect it... for a fee.
60. Sign in Hillel: "Forget you're Jewish? Yes, in Israel."
Raymond from DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (07.17.07)
When living and studying in Montreal in the 1970s, I'd usually spend lunch at the Hillel House near the University. One day I found on the bulletin board a sign reading: "Forget you're Jewish? Yes, In Israel." The sign was from a Jewish organization encouraging people to spend time in Israel. The intent I suspect was that, since almost everyone was Jewish, you would no longer feel different. But there's a lot more to being Jewish than being "odd man out". While I'm of two minds about legislating on this matter, I think it's a shame that the values of those who are not Jewish has so permeated the society that so many act like they *have* forgotten what it means to be Jewish.
