61. Becoming kosher in my forties
Janet ,   Los Angeles   (07.17.07)
I gave up pork and shrimp several years ago and now eat only kosher. Being kosher strengthened my connection to Judaism more than anything.
62. to Daniel
Vitaliy ,   Brooklyn, USA   (07.17.07)
I personally do not eat pork. Nonetheless, Daniel it seems funny (to put it nicely) that you are telling Russian immigrants what to leave behind, when you are not willing to leave behind Finland. Since according to you, you are in Helsinki.
63. to S Judah
Vitaliy ,   Brooklyn, USA   (07.17.07)
Sir, seeing how we both live in the Anglo-Saxon nations, I am very upset that you are not respecting the Christian heritage of these countries by not eating bacon in the morning. It is a shame! Truly!
64. #11 If you don't pretend 2 B Jewish how did you get into Isr

66. very good
Gimel   (07.18.07)
the "pork stores" are Russian shops, most of the Russians are non-Jews and they have turned Israel into a piggery.
67. #1 fool: distinction lost on anti-Jewish fool
dante ,   uk   (07.18.07)
"depth of depravity"??? obviously, paul cannot be reached by facts or logic; the blighter is too far gone. but, for those not blinded by prejudice, ignorance or sanctimony, it should be clear that banning religiously required slaughter is NOT the same as banning the sale of meat that is, itself, religously proscribed and that many find offensive.
68. Paul might find himself a head shorter in a Muslim land
Paola ,   Cambridge   (07.18.07)
It takes no courage to attack the Jews. Let us see brave Paul go to Finsbury Park and spout off about the "depth of depravity" represented by a ban on sales of pork. If Paul is up to the challenge and manages to survive, let him go to Iran or Iraq or Libya or whatever Muslim country and inveigh against the prohibition of the sale of pork. Brave Paul, safe in the U.K., where it is always safe to criticize the Jews, especially those who defend or practice their religion.
69. #63: Most Christians are pretend Christians who do...
(07.18.07)
not care what the Bible says on a lot of things if it means changing what they do. They say the L-rd told Peter he could eat all meats. Many of the dietary laws of Moses are public health concerns, but pigs still do not sweat to rid the body of toxins like other animals do. And shrimp still are bottom creatures that eat garbage on the ocean floor. Christian Seventh Day Adventists have a Saturday Shabbat and most do not eat pork or shrimp. Other people who call themselves Christian disobey the commandment to worship G-d on the seventh day like the Jews do. They say that does not matter, just as they say cutting down trees and decorating them is all right even though Jeremiah said that is an abomination to the L-rd. Pretend Christians think they replaced Jews in G-d's plan when the Jews are the root of the tree and the Christians are the grafted on branch. True, Yeshua said the ax is at the root of the tree; but he did NOT say the root was actually axed. If it had been, the grafted on branch would die. IN ABRAHAM'S SEED IS ALL THE WORLD BLESSED.
70. I couldnt dissagree more...heres why
jack bauer ,   usa   (07.18.07)
The state of Israel as we know it, was NOT set up as a theocracy. There is all sort of unjewish things going on (even in govt.) every day and nobody bats an eyelid. If it is so important to ban selling some pork to a non-jew, then how about just drawing the same conclusions and make all the other ancient laws applicable as well. I dont worry about it since I wouldnt buy pork anyhow...but if we pretend that we will start to be holy by this measure and do nothing else to reclaim what it really means to be Jewish...then Israel will become as lost as its present leaders are. Nobody is forced to touch the pork, or buy the pork. If it available and "such a great temptation" you will do better to avoid it. If you dont want to buy anything else at that shop...then great, that is voting with your purse...the seller usually hears those messages clearly
71. For once a step in the right direction!

72. To #38
BigE ,   Israel   (07.18.07)
Nothing so grandiose. I'm pleasantly plump and my first name begins with an "E"; hence BigE = Biggie - and I really can't stand Feierberg anymore. She's the imperious one.
73. #39 - Stop religious coercion NOW!
Barron ,   Israel   (07.18.07)
The PEOPLE of Netanya are overwhelmingly secular. If you want all that regious crap twisting your mind and dictating what you can or cannot eat, go live in Bnei Brak or Raanana.
74. #58..Peter who was a follower of Yeshua long ago...o
(07.18.07)
said he saw a vision of all the animals of the earth and that the L-rd told him they were all okay to eat. The problem with that is that pigs do not sweat out toxins as other animals do, some from the tongue drool. The inability of pigs to sweat was not changed by Peter's vision. Another problem with eating pork is the BSE or brain wasting disease hazard if canola oil was in the feed. It was found that when canola oil was taken out of pigfeed, the pigs stopped getting BSE. Canola oil is in a lot of people food, too. It is from rapeseed and used to be used to make mustard gas in World War I. It is fine for furniture polish, but is a slow poison in foods. Better to use olive oil or palm oil or coconut oil in cooking. Pork is not the tastiest food for me. Chocolate is. the problem with chocolate is the lead content, which is also the problem with beer which also tastes good on a hot day.
75. Pigs, pork and the Govt.
joe   (07.18.07)
If pigs are to be removed from Israel, no one will be left in the Knesset to govern
76. No. 61 Janet
NYC Girl   (07.18.07)
Never having been religious, my family ate pork, although frankly I could take it or leave it. And while I can certainly respect your decision to stop eating non-kosher food, the difference is that in Los Angeles, the choice is yours to make. If the religious mafia in Israel had their way, all of those secular Israelis would be forced to observe a bunch of religious rituals and, believe me, it would only make those non-religious Israelis even more resentful than they already are.
77. Pork in Natanya
Shalom ,   Baltimore, USA   (07.18.07)
Kol Ha Kovod to the Natanya City Council. Pork stores should not exist in a Jewish state. if Russians want pork let them go to Moscow. This is not coercion but Judaism, the reason that Israel exists. Can one buy ppork in Mecca or Damascus? Islam also preohibits pork, but we don't hear any complaints about that.
78. Which photo of a pig do you mean?
Donna ,   Netanya   (07.18.07)
Oh, you mean Fierberg. Ohhhhhhh! For prosposing this totally undemocratic move, she can stick my next vote up her hoo ha. A 50% religious council voted on this?? What a joke. You can be religous in America or England, be kosher, pious, orthodox or whatever you want. What other people do shouldn't affect you. Same here. Cherish your freedoms and don't work to take that away from other people and this land.
79. Dacon 9 , in your NY you can buy pork
charles ,   petach tikva   (07.18.07)
So let people here , who want it , eat pork . You are not obliged to do it , and i suppose you do'nt buy pork , nor am i .
80. Hy Gaby # 49
charles ,   petach tikva   (07.18.07)
As i have told already more than once , my kitchen is Kosher . I will not buy this kind of food . The only "pork" i buy , is Kosher , it's Prosciuto Bakar . Prosciutto meaning ham [ = pork ] in Italian . Now regarding the true pork . If there are 70 shops selling this in Netanya , it's that there is a demand for it . True ? Those people who buy this are also people who serve our and their country . They should have the right to eat what they want . Half of Netanya's city council has voted in favor of this bylaw ? So what , this can be overturned by the interior ministry or the high court . And we are again on the starting point . What have we earned ? another reason for dislike [ at least ] of both sides . Was this worth all this ? i do'nt think so , Gaby . Have a nice day [ hope you do'nt have nightmares by thinking so much at me , you are always awaiting my opinion ]
81. 40 %
charles ,   petach tikva   (07.18.07)
of the tb'ers [ 31/75] give their residence place abroad . If we add those who do'nt say were they live we come maybe to 38 , half of the tb'ers. Most are in favor of this bylaw . But in their country they can buy what they want . What are they coming to tell the Israelis how to behave ? You do'nt have any right to do it . Let the Israelis decide it , the interior ministry and eventually the high court will decide .
82. Shalom , baltimore
charles ,   petach tikva   (07.18.07)
No you can't buy pork in Mecca , but Saudi Arabia is not a democracy . Israel is one
83. Daniel , Helsinki
charles ,   petach tikva   (07.18.07)
I would like to take beef or lamb any day . Maybe that in your country it's easy to find , here a fresh steak or a piece of fresh lamb are not always available , if they are .
84. #76 NYC Eating pork to rebel
Janet ,   Los Angeles   (07.19.07)
I know Israelis - some are family members - who eat pork or eat on Yom Kippur because they hate the Charedim. This is their way to rebel against them. Having a "beef" (no pun intended) with the ultra Orthodox is not a good reason to give up one's Judaism. I started learning the kosher laws late in life and what opened my eyes were the laws on being humane to animals. The prohibition of cooking an animal in its mother's milk and others related to hunting were a revelation to me. As a child, my mother (her favorite sandwich was bacon-lettuce-tomato) had told me the milk-meat separation had to do with the lack of refrigeration in ancient days. Now, as an adult, I can see how the kosher dietary laws complement the 10 Commandments. Judaism instructs us how to be loving, humane and respectful to our fellow man as well as to animals.
85. Janet , Sad Israelis
charles ,   petach tikva   (07.19.07)
Who eat pork or on Yom Kippour BECAUSE they hate Charidim . What have they obtained ? nothing . I knew also some of those "Religion Hating" people who were walking Yom kippour in front of a Synagogue with a sandwich [ abroad ] Sad and stupid mentality
86. Charles
gabriela ben ari ,   jerisalem   (07.20.07)
I was just saying the whole world wanted to some TB of yours for this topic, not just me (joking) Ok I read them. I'm not going to argue. I just think if that is what was (almost )unanimously voted for, we should agree with it. And nathania is not my city, so I sort of kept my nose out of it
