1. I DONT SEE ANY HAREIDIM
TZIONI ,   NY   (07.22.07)
The picture shows "regular" religious people. Ynet is using the term "haredi" to try to marginalize these people.
2. Where's tolerance? Where's pluralism? Where's democracy?
Caroline ,   Israel   (07.22.07)
It doesn't look much different from the ayatollas country. What step next? All women to wear long skirts, long sleeves, white stockings and wigs? Depressing law and depressing news. No wonder that many try to leave this country - starting from the former Jewish Agency Chairman wearing a kippah... What to say then about the non-religious jews, children and grand-children of those who perished in Shoah? Germans did not ask if they eat pork or not before sending my grandparents and the rest of my family to the Baby Yar... Netanya protest is very alarming for the status quo existing until now. The consequences could be desastrous.
3. PORK NATANYA
DANIEL RIMOKH ,   TARZANA   (07.22.07)
I HOPE THAT NATANYA WILL SUCCED OF STOPING THE SALE OF HAZIR...AND ALSO TO THE PEOPLES OF NATANYA FOR THEIR DEMONSTRATION KOL HAKAVOD THE SALE OF PORK SHOULD BE COMPLETELY BANNED IN ISRAEL...THANK YOU.. DANIEL RIMOKH
4. If they win here, where will they stop next?
Olej Gamur ,   Netanya, Israel   (07.22.07)
If the haredim win here, where will they protest next... the shop that sells revealing swimwear, the shop that sells appliances which function on shabat, the pharmacy selling condoms? Haredim are the same as taliban and hamas... fundamentalists wishing to create a theocracy. There are still laws, even if the politicians are all corrupt. Israel only pretends to be a democracy, but theocracy is the wrong road to follow.
5. SEE OUR RABBIES !
Atilla Liman ,   Karagözoğlu   (07.22.07)

6. Haredim???
Forest Gump ,   Bubbaland   (07.22.07)
Ynet those are Jews not Haredim.
7. The Pictures Don't Match The Story
Judy ,   Beit shemesh, Israel   (07.22.07)
Your story keeps saying Chareidim are demonstrating but your pictures show protesters from a much wider spectrum of the population. What happened to accurate reporting? What's wrong with peaceful protests or are only non-religious people allowed to be politically active in support of their beliefs?
8. "Pork is a symbol representing anti-Judaism"
Secular Jew ,   Israel   (07.22.07)
Absolutely. I rarely agree with the Haredim, but a person has to live under a rock in this country not to read between the lines.
9. Haredim?
Pinchas ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.22.07)
Haredim protest sale of pork in Netanya. Considering that the Media still promotes Darwinism that even the Scientific community has rejected decades ago. It is no surprise that you can't get your labels right. It appears that you just picked the most repulsive to the enlightened Israeli population. Try 'proud Jews', that's what I see. A mixture of Jews from all walks of life who aren't into Cultural suicide, and haven't rejected the wisdom of their Divine Laws.
10. OINK VAY!!
Alan ,   SA   (07.22.07)
11. get over it haredim!
jack bauer ,   usa   (07.22.07)
I support the right of the religious jews to believe what they like, and stand up for their beliefs, but they are trying to dictate what others buy/eat. So I cannot support these protests. There are all sorts of problems in the country and to make such a fuss over a store selling some ham, means that when it comes to other matters that are important, people will remember this. Just like they will remember the burning trash bins, and stones in the lead up to the homo parade Make your point by not buying anything at that store. Money talks. Dont try and put the store out by staging protests. It is not illegal to sell pig yet. If you dont like the laws, then elect leaders that will legislate differently.
12. 21-4 in the City Council is NOT "charedim"!!!
HaDaR ,   ISRAEL   (07.22.07)
IT'S JUST THE JEWS AGAINST THE HELLENISTS AND HELLENIZERS, BUT NOT LIKE ON HANUKAH: THIS TIME WE ARE THE MAJORITY!
13. The Religious
Eric ,   Israel   (07.22.07)
I can't eat pork, I can't shop on shabbat, I can't dress how I want in their neighborhoods, and I'm supposed to respect them as though they are the reason we have a country. On the other hand, I'm supposed to go to work so I can pay taxes to support their 10 children and then when war breaks out I am supposed to go and die for them. If the religious don't want to work, pay taxes, or go to the army....they should shut up and let me eat my pork so that at least before I die in Lebanon my stomach can be content.
14. Furthermore...
Eric ,   Israel   (07.22.07)
Do we really not have other things to protest? What about the declining Jewish majority in Israel? I think working towards encouraging Jewish immigration would be a more worthy cause then whining about what those Jews eat. What about the poverty in Israel? What about our government's insanity on nearly all fronts? What about the fact that the Holocaust survivors only get our attention 1 day out of the year and a big "**** you" the rest of the year? We have A LOT of worthy causes to riot, protest, and yell about. Why we pick these irrelevant issues is beyond me. I don't think the sale of pork in Israel is what is diminishing our Jewish identity....the fact that as Jews we forgot how to love each other is where the problem starts.
15. Pork
DK ,   Israel   (07.22.07)
Very few charedim in that picture!!??
16. TRUE HEADLINE
YB ,   NJ   (07.22.07)
Chareidim (Hareidim) Means (those who) FEAR (the word of G-d, and indeed these people are real CHAREIDIM. Thanks to YNET for stating the TRUTH
17. Pork in Nethanya
charles ,   petach tikva   (07.22.07)
What will they win by protesting ? Nothing . This Bylaw shall probably be overturned , maybe that the high court will declare this decision illegal . If there are 70 shops in Nethanya selling this meat , it's that there is a demand for it by people who SERVE their country . In my town there is also a demand for it , and it is sold , without , as far as i know , any problem . If people want to eat this , let them do it . It's still a democracy here .
18. The Arabs should join this pork protest
Chaim   (07.22.07)
and wait and see the Court prohibiting the sale of pork, and the seculars stopping their anti-Religious hate remarks against their Jewish brothers.
19. Col hakavod
Josh   (07.22.07)
Respect Torah, its is not an empty thing for you. Stop making low paid employees work for you on Shabbat. they are forced to think they have no choice - boycott businesses and free the worker from coersion into working on Shabbat. Back to the pashoot of Torah - it is easy to do and brings blessings to Am Israel
20. Jews and Muslims
son of the books ,   Dubai, UAE   (07.22.07)
one thing jews and muslims have in common ;)
21. Charles-Get it into your head. If democracy means antiTorah
Chaim   (07.23.07)
we do not need a democracy. In our JEWISH COUNTRY TORAH MUST come first. And this is the Law of the Land if you like it or not. Israel is unlike all the countries in the world. We can have a democracy THE JEWISH WAY. There's no reason to go against G-d in order to have a democratic state.
22. To #10 H A H A H A VERY FUNNY!
DIVORCE ATTORNEY   (07.23.07)
23. nice to see
tomer ,   rehovot   (07.23.07)
it's nice to see the haredim protesting against something other than homosexuality. all that's left for them to protest is their own corruption and violent and destructive behavior.
24. does it say in the torah you cant sell pork?
jack bauer ,   usa   (07.23.07)
Does it say you cant have a pig? Does it say you cant touch it because its unclean? But does it say I cant have one? Does it say I cant touch it? I do however think they are unclean. lol I thought it said it is unclean meat and people who follow torah will not touch or eat it. Is it not unclean to touch anything that is dead? How about people? Going to ban forensic scientists? Archeologists? Gravediggers?
25. #21
Mordechai   (07.23.07)
You first serve the army. ALL of you parasites, then you will have the right to make the rules. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but we prefer assimilated Russians, willing to give their lives for this country than religious parasites as you.
26. #2 Caroline
boruch hoffinger ,   brooklyn ny   (07.23.07)
B"H Where's the tolerance? Dear Caroline think what you are saying! Supposedly (not actually) Israel is supposed to be a democracy. Can't people demonstrate for something they know is harmful to their fellow Jew's spiritual development? They're not violent, B"H. Did you ever demonstrate? It's your right in a democracy. You said: " What to say then about the non-religious jews, children and grand-children of those who perished in Shoah? Germans did not ask if they eat pork or not before sending my grandparents and the rest of my family to the Baby Yar... " What's the connection to the news article? Do the demonstrating Jews want to send other Jews to their deaths? Aren't you being intolerant? Think. Study some Torah and enlighten your eyes--I challenge you. It will change you. Like challenges? Be daring, not mediocre. Thanks very much. Boruch Hoffinger bhoffinger@aol.com
27. #11 get over it haredim!
hershy hoffinger ,   brooklyn ny   (07.23.07)
Dear Mr. Bauer, You're wrong. It's hard for the non-religious to understand the motives and life of the observant. You live in 2 different worlds. The Macabees risked life and limb to fight the Greeks because they wanted to offer a pig on the alter. Pork really clogs up a Jew's spiritual channel very much. It could also instigate others who are weak, but religious, to be tempted. Dear Jack, what if a store were selling kiddie porn and there was a strong protest outside a store. Would you say that the crowd is trying to 'dictate' what others view? Imagine you're an architect and built a beautiful home for someone--blood sweat and tears. The owner paid you, then destroyed it. Would it pain you deeply? Similar feeling perhaps--why, why you would cry out! Such a splendid edifice - such a BEAUTIFUL, SPLENDID Jewish soul: The Divine Jewish Soul. Like challenges? Go learn some Torah. It will change you. Don't be mediocre. Answer my challenge. Learn Torah and do mitzvot and you will feel your Divine Soul. Right now it's covered up. Boruch N. Hoffinger bhoffinger@aol.com
28. Governments
Jayzee ,   World Citizen   (07.23.07)
Always have control over what is permitted to be served/sold as food in localities. NY just banned transfats and I am fairly sure it's illegal to serve cat or dog meat there too. There is nothing wrong with the statute in Natanya other than it offends some non religious Jews. Apparently it even has the support of a large spectrum of the Israeli populace too.
29. Eric 13 & 14 - Sense Please!
YB ,   NJ   (07.23.07)
Eric, it seems from your article that you hate the Hareidim Jews, who are the real Jews, tell me what is a Jew and what makes you Jewish???? Think about it. You are the reason we are loosing the majority, so shape up and learn about you Jewishness & true greatness, (you wont need the pig aka pork to satisfy you)
30. YOU KNOW, A BACON SANDWICH NOW AND
DemocracyRules ,   Canada   (07.23.07)
