micah ,   The Jewish country.   (07.24.07)
Usual Ultra Secular BS-20% of all ultra secular boys evade the draft... Duh, I wonder why they didn't mention that??

serve and be proud haredi or secular all should be bound to serve there should be no excuse and no law to excuse anyone
5. oh now it makes sense...
(07.24.07)
yesterday Y-net hit on the secular draft dodgers and today it hits on the religious draft dodgers who are supported by the law. Who's left to serve in the army?
6. Tal Law
Menachem ,   Tierra   (07.24.07)
maybe more of Israeli secular boys and girls should study Torah and probably then they would change this draconian law......
7. A Cancer
Aharon   (07.24.07)
They don't work and they don't serve in the army. All they do is waste the state's welfare budget.
8. #3 Then perhaps we should go after the law breaking seculars
Jeremiah ,   Israel's Jewish Land   (07.24.07)
9. I hate Yeshiva Student
Tel Avivian ,   Tel aviv   (07.24.07)
They are on over burden on the ISRAELI SOCIETY, They'd better be transfered to live in exile in IRAN
10. 8 - I ABSOLUTELY agree. All draft-dodging should stop
Jewish officer ,   Israel   (07.24.07)
Shirking of service is a serious problem, regardless of sector, and it must be stopped. It should be noted, however, that in the past less than a year, the HR Directorate proposed two initiatives aimed at curbing the phenomena of draft-dodging and shortening of service as they manifest themselves in the secular community. Ynet reports on those initiatives: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3428725,00.html http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3320901,00.html In contrast, the Knesset recently reapproved the Tal Law for five years without addressing the problem that 'delay' of service easily turns into exemption, or the problem that, under the yeshiva arrangement, religious boys get away with serving less than half of a proper stint. Recall, it wasn't always like this. In the past, most religious boys did a year of yeshiva and then a full term of service. Even now, many national-religious boys do this, and often serve in elite combat units, to boot. Logistically, how is this different than choosing to do a year of community service before the army? It's not - in both cases, you're a year older when you are discharged, after making a life choice to contribute to society for a year beforehand. As such, opposing the Tal Law is not an attack on the religious sector. It's an attack on biased and UNNECESSARY legislation. Torah study and army service are NOT mutually exclusive!
11. what about all the Arab-Israelis?
davi ,   jerusalem, israel   (07.24.07)
How much money would be saved if we required a national service or community work of them? Why sinhgle out the non army religious Jews? there aretoo many citzens who shirk any burden of the nation. Religious Jews aren't the majority of them. Oh and #9, HATE? Fortunately, yeshiva students don't hate YOU. Sinat Hinam is what brought us the destruction today. Today would be a good day to grow beyond baseless hate./
12. Torah b'peh or Rabinical Cult
Josh   (07.24.07)
The fact that Torah forbids adding words to the Torah and the Rabbis and Yeshivas spend time studying these additions that are Chet, the state should impliment mandatory service. If you ask a Yeshiva student or a Haradi about the story of Jacob's two camps or the lack of magic as the reason why Baalam and Baalak could not suceed in cursing the Israel nation, they would probably know nothing about it. If you asked them if Abraham wanted to kill Isaac, they will tell you how Rashi interprets Abraham as a freak-like character who so wanted to kill Isaac that the angel had to cry his name twice to stop him. Lets face it, there is no mention of Rabbis in Torah and no authorization for them under the call for wise men to be Judges. There is a long way between being Judges and adding canatains, false laws (lighting of candles was NOT commanded by G-d), magic charms, and wildly misinterpreted rules (boiling a kid in its mothers milk). Israel should rise up to the challenge by G-d to stick to the rules Moses gave and not allow man curruption between G-d and his people. Give G-d an original prayer. (Torah vs. prayer book) You don't need someone to get it for you (Torah vs. gematia and rabbininc added interpretations). One G-d, One law for all Israel, one love.
13. They shall serve, or they shall find a place...
Mordechai ,   Israel   (07.24.07)
somewhere else. Send all of them to Hebron and take the army out of there.
14. Shtuyot...
Yehoshua ,   Sydney   (07.24.07)
Defend Israel! ?Against what, the Israeli government?! If those in power were'nt so entrenched in their suicidal obsession for their version of 'Shalom' Israel would be The word superpower, without a doubt. But instead its only the 'Pale of settlement' which keeps getting smaller. Instead of trying to brainwashing people to needlessly put their lives at risk, why don't they build the country-or as I like to call it the Ghetto?! Or have I got it all wrong and theres more money in oppressing Jews, buying weapons and wars...?!
15. Seculars vs charidim
charles ,   petach tikva   (07.24.07)
Why should seculars do the job those charidim do'nt want to perform ? if those "yeshive bochers" made their part of the service , those seculars would not find any excuse not to perform it .
16. #7 Aharon I don't hear any grumbling
Chaim   (07.24.07)
on the "waste of the state's welfare budget" on Arabs who also don't serve in the army.
17. haredi draft evasion
kate sinclair ,   london england   (07.24.07)
Arafat said that his biggest weapon is Arab women womb, that is a demographic bomb. In fact, given theHaredi reproductive rates, Israel has agraeter military weapon. In addition,Haredi men would not obey orders to expel Jews from their land in response to a capricious halucination pf theLeft.
18. Haredi
Hilda ,   USA   (07.24.07)
The Haredi young people--boys and girls both should not be exempted from service. If secular girls go so should the frumees. I'm sure that in ancient times all men had to fight for their country. Surely a homeland that is worth living for is worth fighting for.
19. They're disgusting filth
israel   (07.24.07)
And the sooner this pathetic moronic government wakes up and sees it, the better.
20. whats the big fuss?
moish ,   Jerusalem   (07.24.07)
So what? Who needs an army? Olmert and his gang plan to reduce our country to a few cities any way so who needs such a big army. And aftwer all the PA are our Piss partners we are going to have piss with the arabs so who needs an army? Sure send the Yeshiva students out of our country and with all the yerida of the secularists there won't be anyone to protect. BTW did Peres ever serve in the army?? What about Olmerts AWOL son and his draft dodger son?
21. Olmert's kids dodged the army More secular kids also dodging
Nannette ,   London   (07.24.07)
Most of the dodgers aren't religious Jews. Most army dodgers are left wing, secular, anti-Zionists. YNet is tilting the story one way only. There's thousands of Israeli kids travelling around Europe and Asia, having a good time instead of doing army service, and they're not orthodox.
22. #12 Josh - You sound like you belong to the sect of Karaim
Dovy   (07.24.07)
(Tzedokim). For more details about this sect learn Talmud.
23. #14 and #20 Right on!
Dovy   (07.24.07)
24. #2
Eric ,   Israel   (07.24.07)
Not a relevant point you made there. Secular dodgers get jobs and pay taxes. Religious dodgers go to Yishiva and live off of the secular dodgers taxes.
25. Contemp
Sagi ,   Israel   (07.24.07)
is all I have for them. The State should disown them.
26. There is Merit, but it should be changed
Jack ,   USA   (07.24.07)
College credits, Credits for Torah study, Every new recruit must immediately serve from 17 to 21 no exemptions period. Each year of service gets them in addition to all benefits on the table they recieve they will get college tuition and expenses and housing credits. Some provisions should be made for a limited study of Torah and a limited primer courses for College, These should be excepted as Life Credits toward a degree.
27. #25
Eric ,   Israel   (07.24.07)
As stated in #24 post, if the secular people dodge and go get a job, I can live with that. You know why? If they get a job then they pay taxes and thus contribute SOMETHING to the country. When a yishiva boy dodges and decides to go study Torah for the rest of his life off of the taxes of the secular dodger, thats when I have a problem. If the religious do not want to serve in the IDF or in the national service, that is 100% ok with me. However, if not that then get a ****ing job! If you refuse to do both then I fail to see why any country in the world needs citizens like that.
28. Why just religious?
Shachar ,   NY   (07.24.07)
How about all the non religious exemption, what about all the non religious yordim, why the focus on religious, why the forced secularization of the religious and the limitations within the army for religious. The non religious exemptions must total some very large numbers, and I'm sure personnel are open to bribes for granting such exemptions, for I know people , multi millionaire 's son, for some unknown reason never served.
29. Jewish officer, I think you're missing the point.
Jeremiah ,   Israel's Jewish Land   (07.24.07)
Religious Jews who are taking advantage of the Tal Law are not "shirking" they are abiding by the law. Others may not like the Tal Law because it allows the religious to study in yeshiva first, but the law allows this. If one doesn't like this law they should work to change it but not bash those who abide by it. I agree that anyone who breaks the law and dodges military service should face charges, Religious or secular or Olmert's children and the like. This article focuses on those annoyed by the Tal Law instead of criminals who are breaking the law by dodging military service. More liberal, left-wing spin.
30. 29, Point is Tal Law is being ABUSED, should be criticized
Jewish officer ,   Israel   (07.24.07)
Saying such an article is 'more liberal, left-wing spin' is looking at it out of context. Only yesterday, there was an article about how to combat draft-dodging among the (secular) mainstream. This article, like any other, has a focus - in this case, the negative implications of the ABUSE of the Tal Law. I have no problem with Jews studying in a yeshiva FIRST and then going on to IDF service. Quite the opposite, in fact. But sadly, this is not often the case. The 50K Jews in question in this article are those who used loopholes in the Tal Law to get exemptions - aka AVOID MILITARY SERVICE ENTIRELY. Those getting exemptions may be following the letter of the Tal Law, but they are certainly not following its spirit. In my eyes, this is legalized draft dodging and therefore, being annoyed at the Tal Law is tantamount at being angry at draft dodgers. Yes, there is a law, but legislation can be amended, and, if a law is problematic, it SHOULD be changed. In this case, existing legislation propogates a troubling phenomenon, so crying out about how it's 'legal' does not ipso facto make it ok. BTW, expressing anger about a law(as the author and I both did) is the first step in working to change it, as you suggest we try and do. In my opinion, there's nothing left-wing about anger at abuse of the spirit of the Tal Law. Ask the army boys in Eli (who lost three soldiers last summer) what they think about yeshiva boys who postpone service over and over until they get a complete exemption. I bet they agree with me it's not ok.
