31. Inspection upon arrival???
Roberto ,   Rio, Brazil   (07.26.07)
I can understand tough inspection on passagers when boarding, but do it upon arrival as the article mentions is nonsense. Remember people is already searched in their place of origin and even if one manage to sneak into the plane with a bomb he will certainly explode it while on air.
32. Security
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.26.07)
Yeah, all this humiliating checking of fine, upstanding citizens. Next thing you know, they'll want to check doctors, and we all know they are not only fine, upstanding citizen, but they've sworn an oath to preserve life above all else.... Oh, heck, I forgot about those in jail in Britain..... I so regret that the US won't allow Cat Stevens back into the country, but I do understand why they sent Ysuf Islam packing.
33. Securiy should not be used as an excuse
Rami ,   Nazareth, Israel   (07.26.07)
to maltreat passengers and sabotage their belongings. This is about irrogance, and mismanagement, procedures at the airport should be revised and employee be retrained
34. Disagree
Israel   (07.26.07)
VIPs and diplomats SHOULD absolutely be checked. It's because they are not, that they are able to smuggle drugs and large amounts of cash - they think they are above the law. Guess what? ha ha ha ha you're not!

37. FJ #15
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (07.26.07)
Hate to break this to you but you are wrong. Security trumps diplomatic immunity. They do not have the right to endanger the rest of us, nor are they required to fly. They can walk, drive or sail in and out of Israel. If they don't like to TFB.
38. #30, #34 Noone is suggesting diplomats are not frisked
iandl ,   Europe   (07.26.07)
Of course diplomats should go through security and of course the level of security has to be adequate. No-one is questioning that. Routine security at European and American airports does not involve the methods being discussed here. However, strip searching as a matter of routine random-selection should not be happening and certainly not to those where there is a presumption of being safe: namely diplomats of friendly countries who are already security vetted and who have a right to pass unhindered since those are the terms under which diplomatic representatives are exchanged. The issue here is not routine frisking, but intimate investigations which go well beyond the boundaries of there being reasonable suspicion that anything like this might be necessary and where there are grounds to believe that there may be systematic intimidation taking place based on the prejudices of security personnel.
39. #30: don't forget, at Heathrow there is a "fast track"
iandl ,   Europe   (07.26.07)
As you probably well know, att Heathrow not everyone is handled the same way, because "Frequent Flyers" which means those who are rich and therefore deemed safe do in fact receive different treatment and get whisked through security. I'd rather see everyone treated the same and no-one having to wait hours to get through security as the Plebs do at Heathrow .. but this means none of them should be degraded without reason.
40. 39. I'm fast tracked and fly 1st class, but ALWAYS searched
Nannette ,   London   (07.26.07)
We get the same treatment as everyone else, but just don't have the queues. We're frisked, searched and our luggage goes through the x-rays machines too. Don't think we get any preferential treatment, certainly not until we're in our nice airport lounge, and on the plane.
41. #40 Quite: the preferential treatment means no queues
iandl ,   Europe   (07.26.07)
As I said: all get the normal routine checks. I did not intend to imply that you did not go through the security check. One does not hear of hours long questioning or strip searches in the UK on a routine basis (does very occasionally happen where there are reasons for suspicion) Your preferential treatment is not to have to stand for 2 hours in all weathers outside (well barely covered by a tent affair if you're lucky).
42. Chas- It's obvious
Michael ,   Zurich   (07.29.07)
Israel is trying to present itself as a Western-style liberla democracy that is cultured and civilised. When a renowned cultural figure from Britain-who poses a much smaller threat that hte average passenger because the security people can check his background before he arrives - SHOUDL WE REALLY BE SURPRISED when British academics label Israel a fascist police state and call on it to be boycotted?! If Israel does not snap out of this arrogance, our international relations really have no decent future! We are reinforcing all the anti-Israel propaganda, no matter how false it may be! IF ISRAEL WANTS TO NOT BE A PARIAH STATE, START RESPECTING DIGNITARIES!!!!! as an Israeli, it hurts me to read these horror stories!
