Only God knows how my husband survived. That is repeated endlessly across America every day in addition to crimes like murder and rape and auto theft, etc. by illegals. Just because someone does not need a visa to enter a country does not mean that they can just walk in unrecorded. Everyone who enters the US, citizen, visitor, or illegal alien who fly into the country (or drive in at a normal border crossing) is recorded entering. But unlike most of the world there is no exit check. In the rest of the world to leave you have to show a passport just like when you enter. And both transactions are recorded - citizen or not, visa holder or not.
