Any Jew who has died in the past because of pig meat has done so out of principle and not because he was hungry nor starving. He has done it because our conquerers, the Greeks and Romans specifically, tried or wanted to force the entire population to give up this law and take up their ways. As opposed to this there is a law in Judaism which states categorically that any action is permissible in order to save a life, your own or that of another. This law supersedes all other laws and commandments, there is therefor no need for a religious Jew to die of hunger when the only salvation is pig meat. For instance, in the second world war the Rabbinical authorities throughout Europe gave permission and sanction to eat non kosher foods including pork when life was at stake.

Now you just wait a minute with that disgusting!!!! Any woman, regardless of age, can have the body of a 26 year old, as long as she buys him enough drinks first :-) Here's something else for you to ponder: This is a letter one wife received from her husband: My darling wife, You will surely understand that I have certain needs that you, being 63 years old, can no longer satisfy. I am very happy with you, and I value you as a good wife and mother to our children. Therefore, after reading this letter, I hope that you will not wrongly interpret the fact that I will be spending the evening with my 21 year old secretary at the Comfort Inn Hotel. Please don't be upset. I shall be home before midnight." Your loving husband When the man came home late that night, he found the following letter on the dining room table: "My Dear Husband, I received your letter and thank you for your honesty. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that you, too, are 63 years old. While you read this, I will be at the Ritz-Carlton on your Visa with Michael, one of my former students, who is also the tennis coach where I teach. He is young, virile and like your secretary, 21 years old. As a successful businessman with an excellent knowledge of Math, you will understand that we are in the same situation, although with one small difference - 21 goes into 63 a lot more times than 63 goes into 21 Therefore, I will not be home until next week". Your loving wife,

You men, young, old, Jew or Gentile are all after the same thing!!

I fail to understand your outrage. Arson is a crime usually motivated by revenge. If this particular act was perpetrated by an orthodox Jew who had no cause for revenge and his motive was to take the law into his own hands then that was an act of terrorism. I disagree with these shops and I disagree with the law that permits them to trade but when one tries to change the outcome of a law by acts such as this there is only one word to describe it and that is terrorism.

Ynet, I think, left off the most important part of my #65. I said: You men, young, old, Jew or Gentile are all after the same thing: THOSE TIRES. Makes a bit of a difference, doesn't it?
70. re:m.hartley-why did G-D create pigs etc?
yahn goodey   (08.05.07)
not to be eaten but they were Created by G-D to eat garbage in order to keep the earth clean.the same job that crows, ravens, lobsters and clams do-eat and filter out poisons to sustain a germ free enviroment for humans to live in so they dont get sick.

21 and I parted company many years ago. 63 I have also left behind but I am sure that your sense of humor and lightheartedness will keep you young forever. You are an inspiration. Even a Haredi would laugh( without his wife seeing him).
72. People, we are losing the focus of the article
Jonathan ,   East Coast, US   (08.05.07)
The article is not to debate what is wrong or right about the sale of pork or pig in any sense. It reports basically that a deli, which participates in the sale of pork was destroyed by arsonists. We should not lose sight of this. Should we go and destroy our neighbor's house because she or he does not believe in the same beliefs as we do? No. Israel is the Holy Land of the Jews, and, even if there is a shop that participates in the sale of pork, no-one should go to the shop and destroy it. That's just plain barbaric. C'mon people, by acting in the barbaric way, we put ourselves to a very low level in society - something we want to avoid!

I'd approach the situation a little differently: I'd make the wife laugh first and let the husband go crazy wondering what's funny. You know what they say: Men come and go, but girlfriends are forever. Besides, I do have this tiny, little mean streak :-)

Maybe it is not "he" but "she'? And once again:Tora was written by people!!!
76. A Haredi did not do this
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (08.05.07)
Even according to YNet, "36-year-old, already suspected in other arsons, is in custody." If the suspect was Haredi, wouldn't YNet be trumpeting this all over the front pages and not be coy about it? So, the pork sellers are losing money, hire a professional torch so they can blame "religious," gain media sympathy and collect the insurance money.
77. To SAGI #66
EGW ,   vancouver canada   (08.05.07)
SAGI- I understand what you're saying...but.....arson is arson, and can be committed for several reasons only one of which may be part of a terrorist act. Terrorists don't light fires, in the middle East context, anyway. They try VERY HARD, to slaughter people., the more gore the better for their purposes. Also, there is no proof , so far, that the arsonist is a Haredi. It could be someone who likes to set fires and cause damage, whilst watching them burn. Even if for revenge as you say, that still wouldn't make him a terrorist. I don't condone the action, but I abhor the sale of pork in a Jewish city, in a Jewish country, hard earned by nearly 2,000 years or torture and torment, not to mention millions of innocent deaths.

True, God is both masculine and feminine and everything else in between. yes, moses did transcribe the Torah. so what's the point?
82. leah , Nethanya
charles ,   petach tikva   (08.05.07)
There are 70 shops in your town selling this stuff , so there is a big demand from people who see the tora only as a nicely written history book . Let them eat what they want . If there is a god who said Jews are not allowed to eat it , well he certainly will punish them for transgressing "his" laws . It's upon them to know what they want for their future
83. Sagi , it was meant so
charles ,   petach tikva   (08.05.07)
84. To Mark #3 - Pork in Israel
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (08.05.07)
Please make sure of your facts. The sale of pork and other pig products is not forbidden in Israel and has never been. There is a large Christian population, Arab, European and Russian and they are entitled to eat what they want just as we Jews are. The "prohibition" in many cities and towns is based on the law that pig products may not be sold in Jewish areas however a "compromise" has been reached in some towns that non-kosher supermarkets can open in industrial areas, sell pig products and open on Shabbat. Your point about “Islamic Country” is true but there is very little difference between Islamic Fundamentalist Law and Ultra Orthodox Jewish fanaticism! Both spew out hate and intolerance against those who are different in the way they choose to live. As an ex-South African myself, I suggest you fix up the mess that SA is in before meddling in our problems here.
85. Better negotiate with the terrorists
Enemy of State ,   Judea   (08.05.07)
You Israelis have proven your mettle by negotiating with terrorists for years. Why not disengage from Netanya and allow the anti-pork brigades to have their own city? You could even call it by a familar name for terrorists: anti-Pork Authority, or just PA for short!
86. # 81 Leah
Sagi ,   Israel   (08.05.07)
Your statement is very surprising. If God is all and everything between masculine and feminine why do the Haredi community abhor homos and lesbs ? One is a direct contradiction of the other, they are exactly that, in between.
87. FOIE GRAS NO, PORK YES ?
Michel SLONIMSKI ,   France   (08.05.07)
The same country - Israel ? -bans foie gras because it harms geese but protects pork because it harms only Jews.
88. No. 87 Michel
NYC Girl   (08.05.07)
First of all, Israel's population is nearly 20% Muslim, and they really go nuts at the thought of eating pork, so it doesn't "harm only Jews." Not only that, but you can buy pork in Israel because not all Israeli Jews are kosher. And, as far as foie gras is concerned, a lot of people find the way it's produced to be absolutely barbaric, which is why they're trying to ban the sale of it in New York. Unfortunately, New York City is a haven for over-priced restaurants and they're going to fight the proposed ban in whatever way they can.
89. Selling Pork is repugnent, but so is arson. Sagi is ok
S Judah ,   London   (08.05.07)
Don't agree with his anti religious views, he should show a little more respect to our traditions and beliefs. But he is genuine in his beliefs. Perhaps its up to the us the traditional-religious majority to show him otherwise by setting a good example
90. Pork
NYC Girl   (08.05.07)
Some of these talkbacks are spewing what can only be described as voodoo medicine. If anybody here finds pork or shrimp objectionable, that's fine. But don't try to justify a culturally -based prohibition against certain foods as some sort of scientific proof that the stuff will kill you. In fact, pork is now leaner and, therefore, healthier than beef, for instance, and many types of fish that are considered kosher can contain mercury, which is why women are frequently cautioned to eat tuna very sparingly when they're pregnant. Not only that, but if eating pork were really as life-threatening as some people would have us believe, I know a lot of Puerto Ricans who should have been dead a long time ago...or maybe pork is only fatal to Jews.
