If, for god only knows what reason, you think of France as home instead of as just a nice place to visit, maybe it's time to arm yourselves. it's quite common for European taxi drivers to carry batons etc. and they will sometimes use them on people in a dispute about the fare - in Eastern Europe if there is a dispute, the taxi driver usually calls colleagues and they all gang up on the passenger(s) with threats or actual physical violence. nothing unusual about this.
