1. Let's give Exc. Mr. Olmert credit: at least he has not
(08.20.07)
been falsely accused of causing the deaths of PALS that Christian Philangists slaughtered in Lebanon and then been found to be indirectly responsible by an irresponsible commission that thought blaming a Jewish General was politically expedient. If a Jew can be blamed, even the Jews will find a way. Why shouldn't Mr. Olmert be blamed for everything he was or was not responsible for since that is the Israeli mindset: blame anybody but the people who are really responsible.
2. Since Exc. Mr. Olmert has not been personally accused of
Rivkah   (08.20.07)
being responsible for the deaths of people in Lebanon in a war, he has gotten better press than his predecessor who was wrongly accused. A Jew has not been blamed (yet) for the people Christians in Lebanon killed. That is really astonishing.
3. Not really
eddie ,   London UK   (08.20.07)
Israelis have very short memories, hence they forgot lebanon1, intifada 1, Oslo 1, oslo2, intifada2, and now leabanon 2. reality is today, whast on today's battlefield, since a year ago is already history for Israel.
4. shas, labor, YB put party interests ahead of the nation
aaron ,   ra'anana   (08.20.07)
their seats and volvo's are more important to them then the national security of israel and the lives of jews
5. What`s new = An Israeli desease
Nora   (08.20.07)
Encounters between two Israelis start always with the standart question: What`s new? Accordingly, what happened a year ago is not new. Not to the readers and not to the journalists. That`s why Olmert & co. can evade prosecution. Then we, Israelis, hae another mantra: No popular interest. Without any statistics and any reasonable doubt, the upper echelons can decide that there is no popular interest in what Mr.X did or did not do such and such years ago. FINITO.
6. We will know the politics is getting REALLY dirty when thePM
Rivkah   (08.20.07)
is accused of being a mass murderer. Until then, it is pretty tame. People hate their leaders one day and love them the next, or vice versa. Popularity is controlled by God. He sets some up with popularity to take them down. Others, He allows to be attacked only to lift them up.
7. To #3 Eddie: No, we don't have short memories
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (08.20.07)
You mention Oslo 1 and Oslo 2, Intifada 2 (What happened to 1) and Lebanon 2 (again what about 1 which was no great success either) and what about the Wye Plantation Agreement which gave back Hebron. Israelis might not go to the streets and riot, throw stones, burn rubbish (except the Haredim on Gay Rights issues) but we do not forgive. No one doubts Olmert's decision for going to war but his stupidity in listening to Amir Peretz, whose military experience was picket line warfare, and to Dan Halutz who sold his shares before anything else, is what is unforgivable. The worst thing about Olmert is his stubbornness and his ego (maybe he got that from Bibi Netanyahu) in not facing the facts that we do not want him as our Prime Minister. This is partially because of the war but also because of his total detachment from the people of this country and the hardship that so many are having to endure. Capitalism is good but the State still has an obligation to assist those who cannot help themselves but not those who won't help themselves and leech off the land. The problem here is not forgetfulness but apathy!
8. WHAT!!? WE LOST THE WAR!!?? WHY DIDN"T Y-NET TELL ME?
eliyahu   (08.20.07)
Isn't it ridiculous that no media is outraged? We left that war knowing that we were going to have to go back in. So they took down Peretz and gave us Barak, a man with a great history of winning battles in Lebanon (The truth is too sad for me to admit). And no one is worried. Olmert can say what he wants, as long as the press remains a bunch of idiots.
9. David #7: apathy?
Cheese Eater ,   Paris   (08.21.07)
If the issue is not forgetfulness but apathy, then why is Barak going to be heading Labor? (I'm not saying that Bibi is great, mind you. But at least he has done some good things as Finance Minister, and at least terrorism was much lower when he was PM.)
10. Leadership
Robert Tilden ,   Sheridan, Wyoming   (08.21.07)
Israel is coming on 60. After Ben Gurion, Begin, Rabin, Sharon, great leaders by default do not come consequtavly, its normal to be in a slump. Take any country for a span of 60 years and you will see they are lucky to have one or two leaders that go down well in history, the rest are just drab. Like Olmert. In the United States, the list of Great Presidents always includes Washington, Jefferson. Some might include Adams and Madison but then it stops till you reach Lincoln. Sixty years into its existance America was lead by...Martin Van Buren, forgoten by history. Its nothing to worry about in the long run. Olmert is the equivalent of Van Buren in the USA, or one of those leaders in the book of Kings where his name and how long he ruled is all that is worth mentioning.
11. The Israeli public is sick of Olmert
Ken Besig ,   Israel   (08.21.07)
The Israeli public is sick to it's collective stomach with Ehud Olmert but realizes that he cannot be easily removed from power, certainly not by the Israeli public. Thus, since the Olmert illness cannot be cured, the public must endure his continued presence. This doesn't mean we like it, it just means we are stuck with it.
12. Blame the opposition
freejay ,   Israel   (08.21.07)
Israeli people have not forgotten.....thats a lie! We just have no power to do anything in this country run by a dictator. If the opposition called for strikes, protests etc....the people would do it. Its the oppositions fault that Olmert is still in power because they are as corrupt as him and only worry anout their own positions and portfolios! The people in Israel just need the right people to organize these events and Olmert would be forced out. Why has no minister resigned to protest against Olmert? They are all greedy spineless cowards,on both sides! The opposition is as bad as Olmert.....especially Lieberman!
