Israel's response to attacks by Hamas and the PFLP frequently result in "collateral damage" because the terrorists shelter themselves among civilians. Abbas surely understands this. If he's quoted accurately -- always a question that needs to be considered -- this comment raises the issue of how committed he and his colleagues really are to fighting terrorism in Gaza. At the same time, however, Abbas and Fatah are trying to reestablish themselves as the rightful leaders of the Palestinian people, which requires Abbas, I suppose, to express concern for civilians in Gaza. This article badly calls out for context which is missing. Frankly, I really don't know HOW to interpret Abbas' statement.

PA terrorists must stop missile attacks against Israel if they wish to see Israel stop replying in kind. If PA terrorists expect Israel not to retaliate for missile attacks they are living in dream world.

Israel has retreated dozens of times and made hundreds of concessions. The results have always been disastrous. This is not a war over a particular piece of land. This is an existential war. It is ludicrous to believe Israeli retreat will bring peace. It it would, there would have been peace before the 1967 War. Israel can achieve peace the same way the Allies did in W.W. II. The Allies obtained peace in Europe and Asia by pummelling Germany and Japan into unconditional surrender and made no concessions. Israel must do the same to the "Palestinians".
