31. #25 Vitaly
You make several good points. However, if you knew that someone's kids are attackingJews or foreign workers, would your remain silent?
The Russians are still recent inmigrants. Many of them are isolated within their own community due to the language barrier. They know each other, they meet, and they know whose kids are getting into trouble.
If you do not intervene, you are part of the problem.
We chastise Western Muslims for not speaking out against terror. Closer to home, up here in Canada, we plead with the Indo-Canadian community to help the police regarding spousal abuse (that often ends in wife killing) and also youth gangs. Why? Because they have a code of silence. Although terrible crimes are committed, the police has a very hard time investigating. Those who know - clam up.
I'm not familiar with the situation in Israel, but, as I said, these are very recent immigrants and they have known for years that this was happening.
I hope you checked out the website pogrom.org.il mentioned on #18 because it tells of so many cases of violent hostility against religious Jews by Israelis of Russian origin.
I'm sure there are Russian organizations that could be used to discuss these things and bring them up into the open. No names need to be mentioned, if there is justified fear, but at least they need to talk about it and find solutions.
It is injurious to a society to see ourselves as separate individuals with no other responsibilities except those specified under the law. A country is a family. When some members of the family suffer, we all do. And all Israelis, whether Jewish or not, will share the good and the bad in the future. Those who think that, as long as the persecuted are religious Jews or foreign workers, it does not matter to them, they'd better think again.
So by now I hope you have understood that I did not mean for the Russians to become vigilantes, but to speak out, to get this ugly situation out into the open and demand an end to it.
If nothing is done the reasonable way, Vitaly, you'll have open warfare on the streets, because some Jewish kids, and it won't take more than a handful, will decide that they are not going to take it anymore and will retaliate. When the legitimate forces of order are indifferent or ineffective, and when society does not seem to care, then the people have the right to protect and defend themselves.
