1. "social phenomenon " ???
elchonon ,   chevron   (09.10.07)
Mister Dichter, social phenomenon is what you call a fashion trend.. This has been known for YEARS!! remember the soldier arrested with the swastikas tattoo? there were many more cases there were ignored and shoved under the carpet. "several dozens" is several dozens too many..and i'm sure thats a low estimate. The Lubavitcher rebbe was right in fighting the law of return.
2. lubavitcher rebbe
yechiel ,   uk   (09.10.07)
the lubavitcher rebbe OBM spoke about this issue for years. he begged and demanded from the gov of israel to change the right of return that it should be compatible with the torah and would allow only Jews to return. if only we would of listened to this great sage, we would not have these problems in israel
3. Neo-Nazi actions are only the tip of the iceberg
Citizen ,   Israel   (09.10.07)
There are many relatively silent Israel-hating and culture-violating FSU immigrants among us. Modifications to the law need to consider this. Take a lesson from the Enron criminals - a lack of blood-and-guts didn't make their actions less devastating.
4. Law of Return?
David ,   Yerushalayaim   (09.10.07)
Instead of reviewing the Law of Return, we should review the laws of conversion, to make them conform with tradtional halacha, rather than haredi extremism. If that was the case, we would have less problems with Russian immigrants!
5. Israel is a Jewish State
MARK ,   BOSTON   (09.10.07)
That means all Citizens must be Jewish or convert to Judaism. Any one else must be classified as a Permanent Resident and have no Citizenship benefits.
6. "same group of heroes" - and by the same token
Haifa, Israel   (09.10.07)
let us hope that heroes of other nationalities are not shut out because of the hateful actions of this group. I'm sure I'm not alone in acknowledging this has already happened. I, for one, am sick of the major restrictions placed on us as a result of Soviet-style dishonesty (driver's licenses, professional degrees, etc.). Who needs it? Our old honor system wasn't perfect, but it was a major advantage of our culture.
7. Israel for Jews alone ! Goyim very welcome to VISIT
(09.10.07)
8. It's rabbi Metzger who needs reviewing
Jay A Friedman ,   Ra'anana, ISRAEL   (09.10.07)
9. are the rabbis fanatics?
(09.10.07)
when an Islamic scholar gives his opinion all, persons condemn his saying. You do not realize they are "different" people of different culture and religion. The narrow minded people who do not see that Islam as daily life, not just faith, should not assign themselves Gods of others' religions.
10. A plague on both your houses
Simon ,   London   (09.10.07)
Both the Law of Return and Halacha have got it wrong. My Christian co-worker is decended of a Jewish refugee mother who escaped as a child from Poland. His mother was married in Church to a Christain man. He has been brought up in the UK as a Christian. So if he decided to emigrate to Israel under the Law of return he would be allowed. Halacha say he is Jewish, and when he gets to Israel he would the be supporting the pork butchers and celebrating Chistmas there. He has no idea of what it is to be Jewish. No link with any Jewish community, but that doesn't matter. His sincerity to Judaism is not up for debate as he can produce the right paper work. There are many many Chrsitians who would satisfy the status of being Jewish under halacha but have no idea what it is to be Jewish. I was always taught Judaism is not only a belief but a way off life. not a piece of paper. Thats why niether the Rabbis or the goverment have got it right.
11. Good Thought, But Not Enough. Won't Do The Job
Paqid 16 Netzarim ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (09.10.07)
There are two particular conflicting forces in Israeli society that require balancing of two factors. The majority of Israeli society has a positive opinion of Torah conflicted by an overwhelming aversion to rabbinic medieval mentality, scientifically-ignorant superstitions, obsession with minutiae and ritual, abuses, excesses, corruptions, racism and hypocrisy. Consequently, this will probably be unpopular with everyone. Therefore: 1. Halakhah must be brought into conformity with a formal logic interpretation of written Torah, so that Israel (the people) will be more accepting of it (i.e. eliminating rabbinic superstitions, excesses, abuses and hypocrisy), and 2. The Law or Return must then implement logical Halakhah instead of secular political goals to make Israel the truly Jewish homeland. While the first element would eliminate many excesses, the definition of Who is a Jew?, by contrast, would have to be tightened in order to conform to written Torah as outlined below. The present definition of Who is a Jew? is 1. One who is born of a Jew and who has not ***converted to another religion***, or 2. One who converts according to Torah (i.e. Halakhah). Neither element is strict enough to satisfy Biblical practice (contrary to popular beliefs) or authority. The examples of Eisau-Edom and Pinkhas are consistent in rejecting even the first generation of "born Jew" who willfully rejects the berit of Torah and refuses to make teshuvah. Therefore, I advocate that the definition of Who is a Jew? be tightened to match Biblical (Torah) Authority -- which IS logical Halakhah: 1. One who is born of a Jew and who has not ***rejected the berit of Torah (including Halakhah)***, or 2. One who converts according to Torah (i.e. Halakhah) ***and who has not rejected the berit of Torah (including Halakhah)*** Implementing this logical-Biblical Halakhah would render the Law of Return effective for the first time since Biblical times. Citizenship should then be brought into alignment with this Halakhah for consistency. Anyone already resident in Israel but not qualifying as a citizen according to Halakhah should be declared a geir toshav (resident alien), rather than a citizen. 12. #2 and #7wrong
Josh ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.10.07)
Your statements are completely wrong. What about most of the participants on Taglit (Birthright)? A majority of these participants are not Jewish by law (father is Jewish but mother is not) but yet we have them come for a free tour and encourage them to make aliyah and get in touch with their Jewish side. I for example am one of these people. Father is Jewish mother is not. Made Aliyah, converted and am a working productive member of society who pays taxes etc. etc. If we were to follow your opinon I would not have been able to make aliyah, return to my roots and would still be in the galut ... just like you.
13. And reject fake Jews too
charles ,   petach tikva   (09.10.07)
as this paqid is .
14. #12 Josh & Charles
Perplexed   (09.10.07)
You are wrong #2 is right, this is a Jewish state given to us by G-D and with it he gave us a Torah which is our laws we need to follow. If someone wants to convert and does it the way the Torah says, then he is more then welcome. People like Charles who dont believe in G-d or his Torah, what is the meaning of being Jewish? were does the name and nation come from? it is beyond me, How charles thinks that he can call himself a REAL JEW and not foloow the Jewish law.
15. Paqid Recognized Jew by Orthodox Synagogue & Rabbis
Paqid 16 Netzarim ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (09.10.07)
I've had my own seat, with my name plate, in Moreshet Avot Orthodox Synagogue here in Ra'anana, where I've been praying regularly, for over 10 years. While some Christians have been too ignorant to figure out how to check that it's Orthodox I hope there aren't any Jews that ignorant. I have all of the Orthodox documentation wherein Orthodox rabbis recognize me as an Orthodox Jew in good standing. There is even a copy in my book of the letter from Chief Rabbi Eliyahu, when he held the office, extending his blessings to me in response to my letter to him that set forth everything that I'm doing. I'm recognized by those in authority. Slander from the misojudaic Eisau-Edom racists along with his Karaite, Christian-missionary and sodomist cheer gallery, means absolutely zip. I deem it an honor to be a thorn in their side. Where have they ever provided a quotations or other evidence to justify their slander? It doesn't exist. These misojudaic racists living in Israel won't crawl out from under their rock and identify themselves like men because they know that Israeli law would put them away for slander. My identity, by contrast, is no secret and the evidence behind my statements is open, enabling all who are responsible enough to check the facts to do so. Anyone living in Israel could simply visit Moreshet Avot on most any Shabbat and find me there. Even if I'm absent for some reason, my seat has my nameplate on it and most everyone there knows me. You didn't contract me You came here as a Goy to VISIT, and as a Jew to live
17. Perplexed
charles ,   petach tikva   (09.10.07)
Why do you write anonymously ? are you ashamed ?. If god has given this state to the jewish people thousands years ago , is only a writing in the Tora . It were the 6000 mostly seculars , or even anti religious Jews [ and some non Jews Too ] who gave their life for todays Israel in 1948 . If someone converts to the jewish faith , he is a follower of this faith , but not a Jew for me . He , or she , can't have this Jewish background , can't have the Jewish history engraved in his blood , as a TRUE JEW has Being Jewish is not only being religious , it's belonging to a people . And that's why i , belonging to this people , am 100 % Jewish . And you , nor anybody else , has any authority to say the contrary .
18. But you are a fake guy , paqid
charles ,   petach tikva   (09.10.07)
Why do you have this fraudulent heading on your website ? You are the same , a fraud .
19. 12, in some cases yes
David ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.10.07)
First, kol hakavod. If they have a Jewish soul, then it would be no problem to "convert" as a formality as there needs to be an outline of who is and is not Jewish. The problem is we have nuts on every side of the fence trying to figure this out. Until we reach the geula this argument won't change. Shana Tovah.
20. p*qid-look at me statement, i am kosher!! not!!
(09.10.07)
21. Josh, was your conversion Orthodox?
Paqid 16 Netzarim ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (09.10.07)
I noticed that today you wrote "Made Aliyah, converted" and "make aliyah, return to my roots"; in the same order both times, whereas, on 08.22, you wrote "I converted in the US" -- which suggests a possible contradiction. Haven't some of your tbs been rather Karaite in nature, rejecting Halakhah and Oral Law, (or am I confusing you with someone else)? I also notice that you seem to have been meticulous in avoiding mention of the type of conversion. Nor have you indicated an Orthodox beit k'nesset where you are recognized as a member or an Orthodox rabbi who vouches for you. Can you provide some assurance that your conversion was Orthodox? 22. #21 what the @#$*?
Josh ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.10.07)
lol, who do you think you are? Actually your talkback doesn't even deserve a response. I think you are confusing me with someone else. I never converted in the U.S. nor do I have any idea who you think you are talking to but I think you are sorely mistaken. Do I have to mention what beit k'nesset I attend when I write a talkback? What is this a witchhunt and who the hell are you that I have to prove my conversion was Orthodox? By the way... so you can sleep at better at night my conversion was done at the Jerusalem Beit Din and was even married by Rabbi Lau's son! Geez... since when do we have to prove our Jewishness over the freakin internet??? I think you need to take some of your own courses Paqid. L'ashon h'ra is a bad bad thing. Thought you might have learned that by now.
23. Paqid the fake jew dare to
charles ,   petach tikva   (09.10.07)
ask a convert , if he converted in the orthodox way . This guy has no scruples . But if you ask him who are those alleged "rabbis" that recognise him , he remanis silent , with reason , they are unexisting .
24. Josh , and what did you ask me ?
charles ,   petach tikva   (09.10.07)
You tell this fake Jew that you have'nt to prove your Jewishness via the internet . Don't do to others what you don't want to have done to yourself . Or am i wrong ? you may ask , but another not ?
25. Harpo speaks
Dan ,   Rechovot Israel   (09.10.07)

26. Hey, lets reconsider on the gays and lesbians that come from
other places where ,   this is accepted!!!!   (09.10.07)
27. #24 THANK YOU!!!
Josh ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.10.07)
Hi Charles, You are 100% correct. Thank you. What nerve of that guy eh? Wasn't even worh the effort to write back to that guy. People like Paqid give our religion a bad name.
28. Josh: since there are so many non-Orthodox "converts"
Paqid 16 Netzarim ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (09.10.07)
FYI, asking for clarification isn't leshon ha-ra. There are not only many non-Orthodox "converts" pontificating in these tbs as if they were Jews, a lot of non-Orthodox "converts" are Christians. On 2007.08.22, someone claiming to be Josh wrote: "I converted in the US. My orginal ID had "yhudi" written on it, but my last replacement ID doesn't have anything written on it." The apparent contradictions fully merited asking for clarification and it is the responsible thing to do so that I can avoid mistaking a false convert for a Jew or slandering a Jew. 29. #27 Why talk about "our religion" to Charles? Dude, he's an
atheist. A Jew who ,   won't honor Hashem.   (09.10.07)
30. Charles and Josh
David ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.10.07)
According to halachah, one is NOT to remind a geir of his/her past. Josh, you should not have answered the paqid guy as he is a complete hypocrite, by, advocating one follow halachah on one hand while reminding someone of their past on the other. Unfortunatly this is a disgrace to the Jewish people. He is in the same group as this unidentified "josh" (not you, thankfully) as some kind of nut job who both have incredible intelligence that most of us "regular' folk cannot comprehend. Stay away before he 'paqids' you, just ask Charles. Shana Tovah
