1. Defeat for west is inevitable
John ,   London,UK   (09.24.07)
Unfortunately, I have to admit that we are going to lose against this stupid war on terror. I was talking to my university professor who said that this war should not have been launched in the first place. I dont know about that but, I mean, how can anyone fight an idea. How do you destroy a belief system. Its not like as if west is trying to hunt an elephant in a jungle. This is faith of quater of humanity we are talking about. This is why west will eventually lose and Muslims will calim victory. They will say they have defeat US in its war on terror. Because lets face the facts: Muslims dont see this as war on terror, they see it as war on Islam. That is why west will always be in a losing position. We defeat communism not by fighting but by battle of ideas. If we have launched war on communism with military means, we should have been annilaited by now. You cant defeat a philosophy with weapons. You will lose. This is why I fear the west's end is near unless it canges course very fast and wins Muslims over and reassures them properly that west is not fighting their religion.
2. Boogie!
RobertK ,   Jerusalem   (09.24.07)
Boogie for PM! A revolution in Israel! Proud, intelligent leaders! Israel as a leading light of realism and strength, not Condi Rice's puppy-dog. Return to Zionism, pride, strength, understanding.
3. Moderate Muslims
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (09.24.07)
It's difficult to support moderate Muslims when they're too afraid to be perceived, much less openly heard and seen, as such by their own fellow Muslims. It could be, too, that for the sake of survival or simply expediency some of these groups are hedging their bets and wait to see who comes out on top in this struggle.
4. With "usefull idiots" like # 1
Ivri   (09.24.07)
defeat for eurabia is imminent.
5. EXCELLENT ARTICLE
Ariella ,   Los Angeles US   (09.24.07)
You are exactly right, Mr. Ya'alon. No. 3 in your plan would be difficult to achieve - the U.N. contains a number of sane and brilliant people but also many blood-thirsty dictators and criminals with a collective IQ of room temperature. The western giant has awakened, but must learn, quickly, about the Islamists - not an easy task for those removed from the front who have been living in a cocoon. I would also submit that Israel must find its will and commitment to survive in this most dangerous of times. Thanks again for an excellent article of hope.
6. Islam is waging a war to conquer the West, not viceversa!
The Doc ,   Haifa, Israel   (09.24.07)
...and the only way to destroy these dreams of genocide and forced conversion under a tyrannical and primitive religion is to fight back. The fight must be: RELENTLESS, DECISIVE and with DETERMINATION. Nothing any less will work.
7. lucky your professor wasn't around in the 40s.
Danny   (09.24.07)
He'd probably be saying the same thing about facism. PS learn to count. even assuming every single muslim is a suicidal maniac and the inflated figure of 1 billion muslims that isn't a quarter. The reality is that the jihadists are a tiny, tiny, tiny fraction of people in the world.
8. John
Tony ,   Rome, Italy   (09.24.07)
John, what makes you think that western democracies can't compromise their "belief" systems if life ever becomes seriously threatened by muslim fanatics? You think we will keep them in our countries- let alone provide them with their own. Just look back into the past, or even today in some parts of the world. Peoples and belief systems vanish over alot less. I'm surprised these islamofacists made it this far
9. they delcared war on us--in the 7th century
bob ,   potomac md usa   (09.24.07)
and the wat has not ceased--and will not until we defeat them or they turn us all into followers of the pscychotic "prophet" or as charred corpses. The term "war on terror" misses the whole point. "Terror" is just one tactic--demography and conventional war and wearing away of our defenses--are other tactics--which are being used, I hate to say, very successfully.
10. The west will become what it hates to defeat the Islamists
I'll die a Kaffir   (09.24.07)
You'll see a gradual reversion to our primitive tendencies. No longer will we be the 'civilized West'. That facade will be discarded. We'll recognize that our survival is threatened, and that we too have the 'numbers - and brains. But we'll succumb and lower ourselves to their level - we'll come up with euphoristic slogans to cover our actions and we'll just kill them all. They will be routed from our communities , purged, mini-wars within countries. It will be wholesale genocide. The good , the bad and the innocent will all die. Dont worry about the 'Mahdi" or the "Messiah" - follow your gut instincts as to what will happen instead of man-made religious dogma about the ascendancy of some kind of hot shot. I believe we will 'win' probably after destroying large parts of the planet as well, but we will have become something else, not recognizable by us today. Yes, the Islamists feel very enthusiastic and committed , that they're getting somewhere and we're all abhorred by their disgusting behaviour, but dont worry bro , once the West gets going we'll show them how its done. Nazism was a trial run as what monsters we can become. They ain't seen nothing yet.
11. Editors
(09.24.07)
"uncompressing" ? Surely you intended uncompromising.
12. yaalon, the logical voice!
oded   (09.24.07)
too bad he has not decided to enter politics ,'cause yaalon could be the best that israel now so badly needs! an articulate, respected voice of logic and resolute , he commands freat respect from around the world. a broad coalition with yaalon, barak and bib could be the answer to this mess israel is in. while drekmart and co. rottoning in jail ,gw, this trio can put the fear back in the arabs, and some order in the israeli society. shant tova!
13. Both Moslems and Christians trying to spread their religion
Sam ,   Canada   (09.24.07)
Moslems and Christians would both like to see their religion spread accross the world. The difference is, Christians are not trying to do it in a violent way. Moslems seem to feel entitled to spread Islam however they wish. By contrast Jews are not trying to spread their religion except among themselves and yet they are often accused of trying to take over the world.
14. #1
(09.24.07)
i wonder which university you are attending to have influenced you to have this preposterous opinion. the nazis strived for the same genocidal ideology and had their own "religion" of suicidal maniacs wherby entire sections of humanity were destroyed and incinerated and killed by the ss gestapo terrorists in every part of europe all the way to russia. BUT THEY WERE DEFEATED. and they were much more intelligent and better organized that the crazies of the islamist t6errorist movements. the terror organizations claim that the west opresses them and that the west fights against them and tries to minimize them and rule over them. that the west is responsible for the condition of the arab muslims in todays society. did you really ask yourself and your professor who is really responsible for their conditions? the responsibility falls squarely on the shoulders of their arab despotic dictator regimes that, in order to keep their power, expose their constituents to unimaginable and opressive lifestyles. it is not the west that keeps them back. it is themselves. always easy to blame others for your problems and opression. if looked at closely in all arab countries, not one democracy can survive. not one ruler is humane. not one ruler invests in expanding economy and fighting for the common arab man's future and prosperity. when you cannot blame your leaders because you'll be shot and silenced, you tend to blame others. let's face it, arab societies and economies are highly dysfunctional by their own doings. no wonder the dictators survive through a campaign of fear, opression and assassinations and murders. lok at their political history to understand that nothing could have gotten them to this situation except leaders that used them and abused them for a very long time. tell your professor that he qualifies to teach in a community college because his understanding of the past, present and future is entire deffective and uninformed. and about the university you are attending.....i would suggest you spend your hard earned money in some other institution of a better reputation and superior teaching skills.
15. #1 couldn't be more wrong!!!
DR ,   Florida, USA   (09.24.07)
Education is one way to fight extremism, but if all else fails, you need to wipe it out with force. These animals understand one thing...power. If they fear you, you have won. They do not fear the US as much as they need to. There are plenty of Msulims here in the US and in Europe who understand what the war is about and they are trying to help. We need more education in Muslim countries and less brainwashing by Imams.
16. Another excellent column Mr Yaalon, and a very good plan
Tracy W   (09.24.07)
I would just add two other points: 1)beware of who you elect and 2) demand plenty of accountability. Not even the best plan will work: a) When you have individuals at the top who are working against the country's best interest. b) When those individuals seem above scrutiny, able to silence their critics, and their critics are easily bought off and not fully accountable. I'm thinking of the US government mostly, because it's the key player in this so-called war on terror, but it applies to any Western democracy, Israel included. From time to time we read reports or memoirs that tell us how government or highly placed officials threw a wrench in investigations of Jihaddism, as if they were trying to protect someone or avoid further discoveries. Why? Perhaps some people at the top have already been bought off. There is a huge amount of money being disbursed by the Arabs to pay off universities, think tanks, congressmen, high government officials, anyone who can serve their interests. The Saudis have been financing Western madrassas and mosques, for example, and worse, they have been financing terrorists everywhere. But they have somehow enjoyed special status in the Bush administration. One wonders why.... So your Mr Yaalon's plan is an excellent one, but there isn't the will to implement it. First we need honorable people at the top. I would recommend Ruthie Blum's interview of Steve Emerson on the Jerusalem Post. Emerson heads the Investigative Project on Terrorism, and he spares no words criticizing his government. I quote Emerson: "...how the US government, the media and the intelligentsia are witting and unwitting enablers of radical Islam, by accepting front groups for the Muslim Brotherhood or for Hamas as credible and legitimate. This is particularly egregious at the highest levels of the government - such as the State Department, Department of Homeland Security, Justice Department and the FBI - who meet and greet groups they should be investigating, not embracing. This sends a terrible signal to genuine Muslim moderates and the Muslim rank-and-file, reinforcing their sense that it is the radical groups who are respected by the government. 17. BottomLine::Democracy in west make west helpless soon!!
KMR ,   Middle East   (09.24.07)
Jihadists are largely inspired by the preachers. Preachers are part of this problem.
18. A Dear John letter---NO1
joe   (09.24.07)
The west's end will be near, unless it changes today's appeasement course.Aztecs fought wars for their gods. Certain african tribes fought wars and ate certain parts of their victims,it was their beliefs,it's religion. The French fought a 100 year war (catholic vs protestant} it was religion alright. The muslims went to war & conquest t'il they were stopped in Europe--all in the name of Allah. In Rome, Popes fought wars {by proxy} in order to dominate, The banners that Attila carried, and the Roman Legion, and the nazis, and the communists, ALL carried the same message " in the name of "-- "our god will bring us victory "--" our enemieswill feel the wrath of "--.The simple fact is that since the beginning of time, man fought for the same reasons; to conquer, to dominate, to bring to submission, to enslave, to be the MASTER and, always used his divine belief, his gods, his religion to achieve his goal----same results; killing & destroying. Dear John, why don't you have another chat with your learned professor.
19. All it takes is one constitutional amendment...
DL ,   San Francisco, CA   (09.24.07)
All the spread of fanatical Islam (as well as any other like-minded ideology) needs to be stopped in the USA is a constitutional amendment that limits the First Amendment as follows: "If the freedoms provided by Amendment I to the US Constitution are used for purposes, overt or covert, to alter or abolish the US Constitution, violating groups will be dissembled and individuals of those groups will be charged with treason and sentenced accordingly." This isn't too much to ask for, am I right?
20. Shock & Awe
Akram Kotze ,   Pretoria, S. Africa   (09.24.07)
Jesus said that he would return just in time to prevent the total anihilation of mankind when maybe 4billion has perished. Great will be the surprise when he joins the war on the side of the Muslims against the ignorants sampled in the comments above. InshaAllah
21. Stop Being Politically Correct.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (09.24.07)
This is a war of ideas, a war of values, basically, a civilizational conflict. But how can you fight such a war unless you bluntly confront the ideology of Islam? And confrontation is the right strategy. Forget about multi-culturalism, politness, accomodation, relativism, & even to a certain extent, freedom of religion. But what does confrontation mean? It means debate, open criticism, truthful analysis - dealing in specific detail, and all of it in public. Every type of media should be encouraged to participate. For example, Ynet should have a weekly "Quotes From The Qur'an" section. Or a "This Is Shari'a" section. The same should be done all over the Western world. Televised debates would be helpful as well as radio. And to be effective, it should not be just propaganda, but true & scholarly analysis.
22. you are cowards
saheem   (09.24.07)
no one will be defeated but you and your false country and you will see, history is still coming and days will let you see not hear ....... what unlucky fate is awating you
23. save your efforts
ramallah ,   ramallah   (09.24.07)
it did not work before and will not work now. useless efforts this religion will dominate the world we are so far 1.5 billion , next yearwill be 2 billions, the number is grown baby.
24. Please describe the definition of terrorism ?
sajjad ,   karachi Pakistan   (09.24.07)
He clearly describes the mentality of the IDF. I don’t see any difference between this guy and Osama bin laden? If whole Israel is supporting this ideology then free world should take some action and remove Israeli cancer from the map of world. May Lord protect every innocent person from these baby killers.
25. It started out of fear...
Micha   (09.24.07)
once the cycle starts it's hard to shut it off. I fear for the innocent civilians in the middle eastern arab countries. Do South African moslems really want the end of the world? Is that your wish?
26. Mistake in your headline -
Israeli ,   Nazareth   (09.24.07)
There is no such word as uncompressing I suppose you meant uncompromising
27. John 1#
alun ,   london uk   (09.24.07)
You are right this is a war on Islam but Islam started the war when it was born when it had a philosophy of either convert or die .Since right is might it is logical and inevitable that islam will lose .You cannot defeat fascist ideas with a hearts and minds campaign because they believe in the divinity of their religous books .If my divine religous book tells me that rthe moon is made of swiss cheese no amount of logical debate or scientific proof will convince me otherwise that is why education education education is not the answer and that is why the US incinerated Hiroshimo that is the only way to stop fascists and religous fascism is worse than a political fascism because the religous maniacs want seventy virgins
28. Moslems writing here offended to hear they are violent
Sam ,   Canada   (09.24.07)
So what do the Moslems writing here that are offended by being called violent say? They threaten Moslem domination, war and the elimination of Israel. They reinforce the belief that radical Islam is violent.
29. #24, yes no difference
Danny   (09.24.07)
It is a well-known "fact" in places like Pakistan that the IDF regularly flies civilian planes into the side of buildings on the other side of the world. They also carry out almost daily suicide bombings resulting in 70% civilian death toll despite the daily proximity of soldiers. Yep no difference.
30. #24, Definition of Terrorism
Joe ,   Los Angeles, CA   (09.25.07)
Sajjad, your question is well-placed... While there is much debate on the issue (to say the least!) what most authorities agree on is that terrorism is defined as the intentional killing of non-combatants in a conflict to acheive political ends. The 2006 Lebanon War is a prime example of how Hezbollah agression is terrorism and the Israeli response was, indeed, not terrorism. Hezbollah targeted their rockets, not at military installations, but at cities filled with non-combatants (we can't really call them "civilians" per se because a large number of the adult residents of those cities served in the IDF and were subsequently discharged from service once their duty had finished). Their singling out of non-combatants as the primary targets for their attacks fits the definition of terrorism to a T. Israeli attacks, on the other hand, were targeted at Hezbollah's military installations, which Hezbollah had built in areas with large numbers of non-combatants. The high death toll of non-combatants was not the result of Israeli "terror", simply because Israel was not targeting non-combatants, it was targeting military installations built by Hezbollah in areas with a high-density of non-combatants. One could argue that the high death toll of Lebanese non-combatants is actually an act of terrorism perpetrated by Hezbollah against the Lebanese. Seeing as Hezbollah made the strategic decision to base their military centers in areas where, when Israeli forces came to smash them, they purposefully put non-combatants into a position where they stood to be killed in order to further their political agenda... To make a long story short, Sajjad, this is the answer to your question.
