I really believe Israel will be razed to the groud if Syria is attacked, judging from reports coming from Syria, they massed thousands of heavey long range missles on the border, missiles will rain on Israel like hell, Hizbollah has now massed also thousands of very sofisticated deadly missiles against Israel, there is even a talk of sending thousands of suicide martyers through the borders from Syria into Israel..It will be hell, not to forget IRAN and their scary Shihab-4 Ballistic Missles which has devastating effect. Israel can choose when to start a war but it certainly CANT choose when to end it, the Syrians know very well, that Israel cant bear long deadly war...I hope the leaders in Israel will not committ this deadly mistake and instead return the Golan to Syria and sign permanent peace with it.

Now that Hezbollah has directly threatened Israel, we know that Iran is setting Israel up for destruction, and Israeli leaders are so dumb to realise it. Iran is provoking military action from Israel or US, so that it has an excuse to unleash its Lebanese guerillas on them. We all know how effective Israel was in war against these Hezbollah fighters. British press almost every day was reporting in July 2006 how Israel's mighty army is being smashed to bits in south Lebanon. Ofcourse Israel destroyed much of infrustuture in Lebanon but that is rebuilt by money from Iran. Who will build Israel's lost reputation of being tough and getting the job done? Israel'i so called invinsible army was laid to waste in by Iranian proxy. Israel quickly accepted UN security council ceasefire to end the war. It had vowed to not let anyone stop it until its kidnapped soldiers have been secured. Hezbollah still has those soldiers. Today, Israel admits that Hezbollah has rearmed itself with Syrian and Iran missiles and is stronger than ever. Israel is walking towards self-annialation. Iran President has declared that countdown to Israel doom has begun. I think Israel better end armed policy and learn to talk to its enemies. Its no use talking only to your friends. Hezbollah is likely to launch an all out strike on Israel fro Lebanon, west bank, and gaza. Israel will be surrounded and will not be able to handle guerillas in its own soil. I think peace is the best way forwards rather than risk war Syria, Lebanon and Iran at the same time.

Everyone is smirking and getting gung ho but perhaps one should remember what happened in Lebanon. Despite the US standing back and the famous 'Yo Blair' moment between Bush and Blair, Israel was not able to defeat, disarm or disorientate Hizbollah. In fact Hizbollah's prestige was raised around the world. In London I saw Hizbollah flags and people cheered and hooted those flags in support. No doubt in the Arab world their stock roze even higher. I doubt that an attack on Syria would do anything other than cause unnecessary deaths and reduce israel's reputation even lower than it currently is.

Didn't the US say that about Iraq? And do you remember Bush on the aircraft carrier? Now that was hubris. Look how well the US army is doing now. Guerilla fighters have never been subdued. There are countless examples; Vietnam, Afghanistan under the British, the Soviet partizans against the Wehrmacht. I don't think Isreal could ever beat Hizbollah. If it could why hasn't it yet? After all it has all the money and support and blind eyes it needs from the US.

I agree that most Israelis don't want war. But I must offer a different opinion. Israeli pressure groups and much of its media (including this website) actively demonise the Arabs and reduce the Palestinian / Isreali issue to good and bad. Palestinians are always terrorists and Isrealis are always victims. When actually the truth is the opposite. Many, many more Palestinians have been killed by Isreali guns than the other way round. Palestinians are denied the freedom of movement - even within their own territory - the freedom to trade, debate or travel. Most of the West Bank is surrounded by a concrete WALL. (Just imagine if the British had done that to the Catholics in Ireland) Gaza is completely surrounded by the army and most of the West Bank is illegally occupied. And illegal in the sense that it is recognised as being so by the International Community. Palestinians are collectively punished. There are very few precedents for this is the history of alien occupation. The colonisation of Palestine was essentially occupation. Arabs were ejected from their farms and villages so that Europeans could take their place. Isreal joined in the attack on Eygpt - along with the UK and France - during the Suez 'crisis'. Israel is not innocent. It is unfair to assume so. Especially unfair on the Palestinians.

I am sure that the US won't back down. It will surrender. As happened in Vietnam. There is no shame in that. The Soviets and the British had to do the same in Afghanistan. I would suggest that the US has not won the respect of the people in Iraq. (Blackwater, anyone?) Most US citizens (at last) agree that the invasion was wrong and peoples around the world protested in their millions and millions when the US started all that rubbish about WMDs.

Hizbullah are the official terrorist brigade in the Syrian army so its only natural they would shout about how they are going to fight if Syria is attacked they are part of the Syrian millitary just same as the infantry, tank corps or the airforce. If they have to follow their orders then Hizbullah must also follow orders. If its done right Israel can win any war with Syria no matter who their friends are. Iran make alot of promises but they wont join Syria out of fear Bush & Cheyney will use it as a justifictaion for attacking Iran because they are coming to the aid of their allies. Hizbullah if Olmert doesnt allow himself to be taunted into invading Lebanon using the same tactics used last year then the Hizbullah threat can be limited through using airpower on the borders to bomb launch sites rather than a full scale ground operation. Syria itself is a walk over when it comes to a fight once the IAF get past Syrian air defenses its just a matter of time. T 72s v Merkava 4 Aging MIGS flown by badly trained pilots v most modern versions of the F15 & F16 flown by some of the best trained pilots in the world. The Syrian navy is no match for the Israeli navy. Arrow & patriot missle defense sytems will deal with the majority of any missles that Syria might fire and Israel has its own missles. Handled right Syria will be smashed no matter what Hizbullah or the Iranian monkey threaten to do.

What happened in Lebanon is that the political echelon (i.e., Olmert) held the military back from decisive blows which would decimate Lezbollah. Israel must stop worrying about world opinion and do what it must do to survive. Most of the world's countries will have a collective sigh of relief when Nasrallah (and Mishal) are dead. DRS
