2. Militray coup would be a move forward
Marcel ,   Florida   (10.01.07)
General Gabi treads softly and only gives his opinion. The time approaches where opinion will not be ehough to save Israel from her chlem leaders. Gabi, Do you have more faith in Hshem than you do in Peres Livni Olmert ? I hope you do and will act according to the One who watches over Israel.
3. Dont release them for Ramadan -release them for Shalit
Alan ,   SA   (10.01.07)
Im against any swaps BUT if they MUST do thisstupid release it should be in Xchange for Shalit +the 2 servicemen in captivity in Lebanon(or Iran)
4. ashkenazi should be Premier for his statement
alan ,   Desolation Sound   (10.01.07)
Finally we hear the truth from the Generals.
5. Even the Lefties are sick of these gestures of good will
Carl ,   Indianapolis, USA   (10.01.07)
Perhaps it's time to start all over just between the Arabs in the territories and the Israelis. Everybody else get out the conference room!!! Particularly the Americans. Go and solve your own huge messes, Bush and Rice! Leave the Jews and the Arabs in the territories reach some understanding. USA - stop interfering!
6. Thank you Gabi Ashkenaz for your statement.
(10.01.07)
7. IDF should take control of the gov't...
Barron ,   Israel   (10.02.07)
until there are new elections. Worked for Turkey a couple of times. Could work for us.
8. What a president
Sidney ,   USA   (10.02.07)
Years ago someone described Peres as the lifetime mayor of Chelm. He has not gotten smarter since then.
9. #7 - The IDF top jobs were filled with Lefties - too bad.
Carl ,   Indianapolis   (10.02.07)
Otherwise, yours is a good idea.
10. Ashkenazi should oppose release of terrorists and process
Steve ,   US   (10.01.07)
I wonder if General Ashkenazi will have the "temerity" to oppose using IDF soldiers to expel tens of thousands of Jews from historic Israel in order to leave the Jews defenseless before invading Arab armies; defenseless against the internal Muslim Arab threat. Marcel is right, at some point the army might have to at least temporarily take control of this country until we find true leaders that do not serve foreign masters who are enemies of Israel; lest Israel is annihilated by her enemies because of corrupt, out of control leaders at the helm.
11. It's NOT unethical!!!
Natan ,   USA   (10.02.07)
IT'S CRIMINAL!!!!
12. Pals shouldn't release Shalit til all Pal's freed?
Blake Lewis ,   Washington DC   (10.02.07)
If Ashkenazi is right, then all 11,000 Palestinians would need to be released before they release Shalit. That makes a lot of sense.
13. IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi
ben ,   singapore   (10.02.07)
Now you Speak like a Real Chief of IDF. This is an necessary evil to release the 87 ( who is confirmed to haev not mudered the isareli People) subject to a pleadge that they will be under surveillance. Now if they are good man- they will release our shalit. Will they ? Will they do as we do, Tell me Gabi, Tell me, Tell Shalits Parents. Please ; - ( ben singapore

17. Fire Sale
ralphsrant1 ,   USA   (10.02.07)
Again Livni Olmert Kadima labor barak and Peres are trying to make a name for themselves by selling out Israel. Money speaks as usual. What was the price they took to sell out Israel and point the nation towards disaster. http://ralphsrant1.blogspot.com/
18. Ashkenazi : any extra-IDF tool is ethically correct

20. Israel needs leaders like Ashkenazi
malka   (10.02.07)
This prisoner release is a slap in the face to the Shalit family and to those in Israel and around the world who have been praying for his safe return.
21. 10,000 more releases required.
Peter Morris ,   New Zealand   (10.02.07)
Release another 10,000 Palestinians then the IDF can start moralizing about ethics. But to show some faith then a release of 5000 prisoners immediatly would be a step in the right direction and hopefully some movement on the Israeli prisoner can gain momentum.
22. What are we getting in return for this???
Yakov ,   USA   (10.02.07)
This attempt at getting good will is misguided. Don't rease ANY of these prisoners without at least getting Shalit, Goldwasser and Regev back. There was an article here on Ynet saying something about Barghouti. Don't think of releasing him until ALL missing Israeli soldiers and agents are accounted for. That means until Ronny Arad and the other missing men in Lebanon are accounted for and returned to Israel. Of course, Shalit, Goldwasser, Regev also would have to be returned alive, healthy and unharmed. Nothing less.
23. #21 Peter Morris, New Zealand.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (10.02.07)
Can we release them in New Zealand? That way you can have them as your neighbors. I'm sure having them as your neighbors will be a highly educational experience.
24. peres is just helping his people, the palestinians!
jason white ,   afula,israel   (10.02.07)
25. NOT just Gilad, but all the soldiers, G-d protect them
Rick ,   Sharon, CT   (10.02.07)
olmert's concession is inexplicable especially in view of the fact that the leader of the p.a. declared that it was inadequate and would be meaningless. it is more evidence of the criminal incompetence of the Israeli "leadership."
26. Ashkenazy = a leader w/some sense, rare in Israel
dante ,   uk   (10.02.07)
27. Finally smells the coffee does he?
Ilan ,   Ariel   (10.02.07)
When Shalit was first kidnapped where was Abbas and Fatah? In charge of Gaza still. So why is it that Israel accepts claims as if neither Fatah nor Hamas has the ability for force the release of Gilad Shalit? And why then do we proceed to give "gifts" to one set of terrorists after the next with no comprable actions? This is way too little, way too late.
28. GILAD FIRST!
