1. Why not make it more difficult for breakins to occur?
Rivkah   (10.03.07)
Have Armorguard window film glued on the inside of windows in clear, smoky tint or silver or copper tint to make the glass difficult to break. Then put metal locks with thumb screws at the base of sliding windowns so they do not open more than a few inches. Put inside bolts or chains on doors. Keep porch lights on at night or have motion sensor lights near windows on the outside in addition to electrical alarms with a battery backup. Making burglaries more difficult usually causes the would-be burglars to go somewhere else.

(10.03.07)
"On Tuesday he was arrested by the police, who managed to trace him thanks to the identification certificates which were left in the pockets of his trousers." I'm glad they managed. It doesn't look as though it was that hard, but I suppose it ust have been. ;)

You are right [ the first time i can say this to you ] . But , there is a but , would you spend thousands of shekels in security if you rent an appartement ?
6. #5 Charles: The problem in rented apartments I have found is
Rivkah   (10.03.07)
the landlord or manager or maintenance people who have keys to the apartments robbing people. So the lock has to be changed without the manager being told and the owner's lock but back on when one leaves. When the people with keys try to rob you, they are too embarrassed to tell you their key does not fit the lock. Putting on Armorguard window film is expensive, but the problem I have run into is that the apartment or house owner does not want it or does not want to deduct the expense from the rent money. So that is an out of pocket expense and needs to be ok'd by the owner. If you have a long term lease, it might be worth the espense; but not on a month to month rental, obviously. Window metal locks with a thumb screw are cheap as is a chain lock for the door. When workers come into the apartment, you have to check to be sure the thumb screw has not been loosened and the window unlocked. A lot of workers set people's homes up for burglars, like they get a commission. I have had workers over who unscrewed screws in door handles, for example. Once, I put Armorguard window film which cannot be cleaned with ammonia window sprays like Windex, on a rental with rolling metal shutters. That was a BIG expense, about $9,000. And then the owner told me to leave because he wanted to rent it for more money to someone else. So I had the shutters taken down and put into storage. That was a big out of pocket loss and I have not put Armorguard or shutters on any rental since then. But I do put those on when I have a mortgage on a place. There are window locks that can be screwed on with a key lock so workers or visitors cannot unscrew them, unbeknownst to the occupant. I saw some at "The Home Depot" last week. Renters are at the mercy of the owners in a lot of ways, but sometimes that is the only way a person can afford to live. When in Israel, I rent. At one place, there was theft and my clothes were stabbed with a knife. At another place, that did not happen; but I learned to keep most of my belongings locked in luggage when I was absent from the room or apartment if workers were expected and I could not be there. Why anyone would want to take what little I have in Israel or America is a mystery to me. What value are books even at a used book store? Why bother breaking in for food and books and old clothes?
7. #3 - Pantless burgler's name

When burglars come in your appartement , generally they don't know what they can find . If they are "professional" , they will open almost everything , without any problem , but they'll "visit" you only if they know that there are valuable objects to take . Most of those burglars are "people" looking for some money , or easily to sale things . I had also such a "visit" before making Alyah . A very bad sensation . My story is of course true , but with your fantasy , i'm not sure about yours .

Probably indulging in that 'droopy pants hip-hop syndrome' that I see so many of the young folk sporting these days.

debra ,   usa   (10.04.07)
a machine that hangs on the doorknob and barks like a dog when the handle or door moves. also, put a big dog bowl for water ourside if you live in a first floor apt. or a house. print the name "wolf" on the bowl. and put up beware of a dog sign.
