Assad might not survive the destruction of his only ally. It would also force the Shi'ite gov't. in Iraq to make concessions to the Sunni (a key Saudi request) which might create temporary conditions for an American withdrawal. It would also weaken Hamas - so it fits into American plans to bolster Abbas. It would also be a reminder to Russia that America does not want them in the Middle-East. So, talking about Lebanon is kind of a side show - it pleases the French, it plays well in the media, and it pleases the Sunni states. Of course, there is the added advantage of eliminating Iran's nuclear weapons program.

But the US a country thousands of miles away who has done nothing but interfere in the politics of other nations all over the world usually bringing about negative results for the majority of the people in those countries.
