chaim ,   miami beach usa   (10.09.07)
This is all very exciting but pray and tell the Israeli citizens that are and will be subjected to the daily non stop missile attacks, what are they to do or more important what is the government going to do during the interim in protecting them while an imperfect defense system being developed that will take years to build, test and deploy. Does the Government claim that since we are trying to pull the wool over your eyes with pie in the sky systems, we have done all that is required. What a pity that Israel is being led by such uncaring government.

7. Chaim, i'm left wondering as you sit in south beach
Mike ,   Chaim   (10.09.07)
Has your Goverment blinded you to the point where you seem concerned about Israeli issues. You claim its a shame that "Israel is being led by such uncaring govermenet" You happen to be correct that this govermenent needs to be changed but for you to sound off about our goverment or lack of it. is like hamas saying that Israel is lying to its public, impling that they are totaly open with theres. Clean your own back yard first before you start cleaning ours.
8. the safety of israel is the most important issue in
debra ,   usa   (10.09.07)
the world at this time. in order to build all the protection needed, if necessary, israel should not hesitate to borrow the required monies from the usa.
9. Let's do the math
ralphsrant1 ,   USA   (10.09.07)
10 rockets and morters per day 3665 per year, 10 years 366500 wow I can see how that can help. http://ralphsrant1.blogspot.com/
10. For#3 - 10% FRIZZLE
Raoul Schur ,   Netanya Israel   (10.09.07)
90% coverage is a lot more than zero coverage. Barak sounds believable to me - he has learnt a lot, I think. No system can be 100% infallible, anyway.
11. Mike # 7 admonition to my critque
chaim ,   miami beach USA   (10.09.07)
Mike your reasoning as to why I am more concerned by what happens in Israel’s political system when the Current administration is also turning a deaf ear to the please of the majority of the American citizens is flawed for many reasons. The most glaring one is the difference between a parliamentary government and a directly elected representatives. Parliamentary government consists of the election of a party and not of the individual, in most cases in aa democracy there is no party that has ever been elected by a majority of the population, that being the case the leader of that party garnering the most parliamentary seats is asked to try and form a government that will contain the necessary amount of seats to promulgate laws, so the haggling and distribution of positions that will actually govern such as the FM, DM, and other positions that are charged to enact the governments mandate, these positions are filled not by choosing the most qualified person but by the seats held by that party and the inner party leader. To change the current leadership a vote of no confidence is required to force either to hold new elections or a change of top leadership. In such a system there are no checks or balances to give assurance that unqualified people are removed before they make and impose their ideas of governance, such as the desertion of the Lebanon enclave, the blatant mistake of such has yet to be paid for in Jewish Blood, the surrender and abandonment of Gaza to known terrorists without any rhyme or reason thus creating a safe haven for terrorists to wreck havoc with impunity against Israel proper. All the unpopular government official can say is contained in the words of the current President which were uttered even prior to being Appointed by self serving politicos “Quassem Smassems what’s the big deal learn to live with them” with this amount of personal caring for the people he is charged with caring, he is deemed qualified to be president. Is the American system better yes 100% better at least any Justice of the supreme Court, even any Justice of the Court of Appeals is scrutinized by an independent government body, every official representative appointed by the President is vetted in the same manner. Can you claim that the Israeli population has any say what so ever in the appointment of any Judge, Foreign , Defense minister upon whom they must place their trust. Compare the two and tell me which is more preferable. I America perfect no but so is every other country in the world, the difference being every person living under any tyrannical system wishes to be an American even a large segment of Israelis. My issue with the direction that Israel is being led, is I am Jewish and Identify with Israel and would be devastated if any calamity shall befall it, and as such I voice my opinion or objections when I feel it is going down the wrong path. .

eddie ,   london UK   (10.09.07)
Of course, these missiles will continue to be fired, adn they are expecting them fromt he west bank to. So it is a a good deal, Israel ceded its capital and historic areas, and in return gets more missiles from every direction.
15. What a CROCK
Malcolm   (10.09.07)
Sounds like a boat load of bullshit to calm the masses and get them used to the endless barrage of missiles that NOW include Katyushas.
16. when will they learn to shut up
zionist forever   (10.09.07)
Why are the results of this committee meeting being made public? Its all very nice that within a number of years Israel will be able to defend itself from 90% of missle attacks that is still years not today and making statements like this only sends a message to the enemies Israel is fighting today that its going to take years beore there is even 90%. Iran has been showing of its nice shiny missles saying how they will be fired on Israel but these anouncements say we can handle some but we cant handle everything and even in future we can handle 90% of it but still not all. When will those iditiots in the knesset and millitary learn there is a time and place for anouncements and you dont tell the enemy either negotiationg tactics before they begin or what your millitary weaknesses are or your plans on operations your either considering or planning on carrying out in future.
17. Why Israel Always in danger and feel threatend?
Alex ,   Florida   (10.09.07)
1.They live in a land stolen from Palestinians 2.They occupy Arab lands 3.They created more wars than any country in the regione since 1948 4.They will never feel secure even if all the world army and place it on there border. Simply this land doesn't belongs to them... dude this is the biggest Robbery in the history.... Comments: 1. don't give me the BS of anti semite ok 2. Not all Jewish Zionist, in fact most of Jewish in the world refuse Zionist actions 3. Please read (Israel lobby and American foreign policy ) and you find all the facts am talking about. 4.If you need the facts also, find any national Library and read the history of Israel palestenian conflict, you find enough answers. Finally as an american, I dont want my childeren to die in a wars aimed at protection of Israel but harming my country,. AIPAC, zionist and neocons have to stop pushing my country for another war with IRAN. Thanks for placing the comment
18. "...within a number of years..."
Eric ,   Montreal   (10.09.07)
Vague statements like that mean nothing! Israel needs the missilie protection system NOW as the danger looms around the corner. When vague statements such as these are made it is just to fool the people and make political gains. The politicians thinks the people are stupid.
19. Will the enemy now quietly wait 2 years?
David ,   Shilo Israel   (10.09.07)
Mr. Barak. You gave us a little quiet on our northern front for as long as it took for our enemy to gain strong offensive positions. Do you think the enemy are also going to wait quietly on the sidelines having announced to them that it is better to attack us before we have our own 'star wars system'?
20. Chemical & biological weapons
QmAn ,   London, UK   (10.09.07)
Mr. Barac Within a number of years Israel will be able to defend itself against 90% of missile shooting attempts. According to some sources within IRGC, Irani is going to attac israel with chemical and biological weapons not with conventional weapon, they armed all Shahab 3 missiles targeted toward Israel with chemical and biological warhead
21. Israel’s citizen have the right to expect better protection!
H.H.M ,   Israel   (10.09.07)
Before the Knesset State Control Committee appeared Defense Minister Ehud Barak accompanied by Deputy Defense Ministers Matan Vilnai, and Deputy Defense Minister Ami Ayalon, IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, Home Front Command chief, Major-General Yitzhak Gershon, and former Defense Minister Amir Peretz, to air the State Comptrollers report concerning problems at the Home Front. – Surprising was Chief of Staff statement on one side praising the State Comptroller’s persistence to continue his work and at the other hand “…..I f a local authority faces any problems, w e w i l l assist by reinforcing the Home Front Command…” thus admitting after about 16 -17 months after end of Lebanese war, still a sizable amount of “mishaps” are still to be taken care of. - Defense Minister’s Barak’s statement’s concerning defense measures against Qassam, Shihab missiles etc were revealing by his “…….There is a project which began during Amir Peretz's tenure as defense minister, to quickly build a Qassam and Katyusha interception system ……… so that Israel will be able to defend itself against the Qassam or the Shihab within a number of years….” From other statements we already learned that one has to think here in terms of up to five years. Taking into consideration the tough discussions between PM Olmert and Comptroller Lindenstrauss in the Knesset the summing up of Knesset Control Commission session by its chairman Orlev "…What we heard today was very refreshing. We believe that the defense establishment today has a plan which puts the handling of the home front in a different place. These things remain to be examined, and I am pleased with the fact that people have begun fixing the failures instead of engaging in arguments…." It is frightening that the country’s supreme authority, Knesset with its State Control Committee indirectly admits continues shortcoming at the Home Front despite the IDF and Defense Ministry’s effort are continuing, as one can learn from Rebecca Sief Hospital, Saffed which applied for being included in protective buildings against Katyusha etc as being not included in the 2008 government budget for it.
22. let's assume that
(10.09.07)
that hogwash is true and is not for deterrence. Then Iran has to afford 2000 missile in order to destroy TA. Maybe the rest of Iranian missiles would not finish the whole thing, but it would be certainly enough to warrant you for packing.
23. #1 no, but it will protecct you from your own bad thaughts
(10.09.07)
24. Barak should do something about todays threats
zionist forever   (10.09.07)
A good defense minister would understand that the best defense is a good offense and instead of feeling proud that within a number of years but not yet. Israel will have 90% missle defense he should be out there making plans to stop the current threts because the enemy wont wait till Israel is ready for them.
25. DANGEROUS ILLUSIONS
Steven ,   San Francisco   (10.09.07)
There is no and probably never will be a foolproof anti-defense missile system. To make this claim in the light of the recent war and the ongoing missiles from Gaza is the height of arrogance and folly.
26. Oh shut up Alex!
Claudia ,   Tampa, FL USA   (10.09.07)
Enough of your minority opinion. The vast majority of Americans support Israel because they know we share values and belong in the Holy Land, as history proves out. Jews prior to 1948 bought and paid for their land and numbered over 800,000 when they declared independence. The Palestinians never had any form of government, and apparently never will. They can't even stop killing eachother! Islam and Arab culture have nothing in common with the West, and these despicible despots consistantly feel so threatened by Israel's presence because Israeli's are smarter, and stronger than any Muslim culture. If you think Iran is going to be your friend you are a sadly mistaken dhimmi. Evil in the world will not go away by wishful thinking. It has to be fought against in every way.

Alex 1. The land that Israel occupies was not stolen from the palestians there was no palestian state of some kind that existed before 1948 it was a province of the British Empire. The palestians were offered 2 states in 1947 the jews said yes the arabs said no way and they chose to start a war but they lost what a shame Israel survived the arabs lost and paid the price for loosing just like in every other war you have winnners and loosers and the winners get the rewards. You think if the arabs won the war in 1948 they would have afterwards called all the jews to come together to have a group hug .. they wanted to drive the jews into the sea then claim the spoils of war. 2. They occupy JEWISH LANDS all this territory LIBERATED in 1967 was jewish land but thanks to arab wars and politicial deals done with the French and British empires mainly over oil or arab support during the 2 world wars the jews lost out. 3. Yes there have been more wars because the arabs have refused to recognise Israels right to exist and all but 2 arab states and the majority of islamic states accept it has the right to exist not because they give a dam about palestians but because they feel there is no room for a jewish state in a mainly muslim region. 4. Your probably right Israel will never feel secure. To feel secure you need to have a history of security annd the arabs have never allowed Israel that privalage feeling insecure isnt a crime. As an American nobody is asking your children to die in a war for Israel if you look at the history of the wars Israel has been forced to fight never has outside help been asked for. Can you name a war for me where the Americans or any other outsiders were asked to come and fight to help Israel? Its Bush and Cheyney that are hell bent on stopping Iran getting the nukes even if that means millitary action. Israel wont complain but nobody is trying to force them to do anything. Sharon told Bush that going into Iraq would be a mistake but his advice was ignored. Its the US that goers around the world fighting other peoples wars Israel deals with only its own problems and the only Americans who might die fighting in Israeli wars are either voulenteers from abroad or America olim who are now Israeli citizens and have the same obligations as a citizen born in Israel or anywhere else in the world. We dont live in a world of global peace where everybody loves each other. We live in a world where everybody is in it for themselves and are willing to fight for their cause remeber it takes 2 sides to have a war and thats because both sides want something different.
28. Within years?? Well what are you going to do bout tomorrow?

29. Missile Defense
Jerry   (10.09.07)
These missiles are being kept at the bottom of a rabbit hole where Barak goes every day and meets with the Mad Hatter. Occasionally they play croquet with the Red Bubba and discuss what kind of stories to tell the peasants.
30. expect better protection
halte ,   boise, USA   (10.10.07)
If you want better protection, then your first priority is to pray to God and then you will have the best protection ever.
