1. I came to the same conclusion long ago!
Zooog ,   USA   (10.12.07)
The Jewish people caught a shooting star with the re-establishment of the state of Israel. They must hang on to it with all their might because never again would they be able to return from the dead.
2. Good
Tom ,   Bsas,Argentina   (10.12.07)
Brilliant article.
3. israel
zichron   (10.12.07)
it is the attatchment of jews to israel that is their soul . The hope to return in a messianic age full of miracles as seen in health and technology today and the in the dark side weapons of horror is a reality . the difficulty of sharing the land with arabia and christianity is a function of human nature theory and the lack of belligerant power of the peaceful personality character . The atom bomb was created to give the endangered minority a deterrant against the predator mass power .
4. Why no one has told Ahmadinejad that UN voted on 1948 for
Asher ,   NY, USA   (10.12.07)
establishment of State of Israel? How is it possible that UN as a World Body has not condemned Ahmadinejad as a leader who arrogantly denies even the UN vote for establishment of Israel. Maybe because his own Boss (Britain) gave the "Abstain" vote at that day.
5. Echos of the Uganda plan
Raymond from DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (10.12.07)
Many years ago, I helped teach a course on the Arab-Israeli Conflict (that's what we called it then). When discussing the plight of Jewish refugees from Europe fleeing to Palestine, having no other viable destination, one hostile, pro-Palestinian student, asked "What about Uganda?" I asked, "Were there not also people already living in Uganda? How would the situation have turned out different there?" Chabon, it appears, has developed this theme, albeit in a different clime. Plocker is right. The Jews need a state of their own, and it can only be where it is. The world must learn to accept that.
6. Jewish Autonomus District
Jerry Sussman ,   Alexandria, USA   (10.12.07)
One would have thought that a novel about the establishment of a fanciful Jewish homeland in Alaska would have contained at least a passing reference to an actual attempt to establish a semblance of a Jewish homeland in the frozen hinterlands of the former Soviet Union. Though essentially lost to history, the fact is that, prior to the onset of World War II, Stalin established the "Jewish Autonomous District," in the frozen wilderness of the east. Some Jews settled there voluntarily; others were forced, For a time, it appeared that the Jews might have lived happily every after. They didn't, of course. Prosperity was greeted by typical antisemtic resentment, if not pogroms. In time, most Jews left. Though only a handful remain, it still retains its rather anacrhonisitc and somewhat incredible name of the Jewish Autonomous District. Would Jews in Alaska have met the same fate? I used to think that what happened in Germany could not happen here. Americans are different. Now, I'm not so sure. However, my understanding is that the Native Americans, Alaskans included, tend to view Israel and Jews favorably, if for no other reason than both were dispossessed from the land that once was theres.
7. What the problem with assimilation?
izik ,   tel-aviv   (10.12.07)
Jews will assimilate and live their happy life wherever they will. Sure, all orthodox zealots should stay in Israel. So, what the problem guys?
8. And Mr. Chabon is absolutely right.
The Raccoon   (10.12.07)
9. ALASKA? Hell NO! Canada - The CHOSEN WORLD
ISHMAEL ISHMAEL ,   TORONTO CANADA   (10.12.07)
So all the Jews living outside of Israel have no future? Zionism mixed with Judaism makes for nuts and fruitcakses. Anyway, the more hopeful HCOSEN WORLD - OUR WAR ON ISLAM AND OUR OWN FREEDOMS has a great future for a vibrant New Israel occupying most of three Canadian provinces - Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Not to worry just in case Israel reaps what it sows.
10. #7 Assimilation
Aharon   (10.12.07)
Do you not see any value in being Jewish, whether you are religious or not? I'm not at all religious, and yet I would die before I converted to another religion or intermarried. Is your Jewishness not at all valuable to you?
11. ISHMAEL, what?
Kev ,   London   (10.12.07)
Your English is so bad that I have no idea what you're talking about.
12. Why oh why?
Alin ,   Bucharest,Romania   (10.12.07)
Why not provide iranians with a shelter in Antarctica?
13. Alaska
Ziva ,   Israel   (10.12.07)
If G-d forbid there is no State of Israel, all the Jews of the world will assimilate out of Judaism and disappear as Jews, except for the Orthodox. Only they will have Jewish descendants. We already see this happening in the Galut.
14. The book got so-so reviews here in ALaska
mea ,   Juneau, ALASKA   (10.12.07)
Truth be told, the book was shrugged off here in Alaska. Baranof Island (about 20 miles from where I am sitting right now, is a puzzling place as a choice for the story. Seriously, it's so odd even Alaskans couldn't figure it. That said, the subject of no Israel was wasted on the silliness of this book. btw, I loved Kavalier and Clay.
15. Jews and Israel are eternal and eternally connected.
David ,   Boston, USA   (10.12.07)
Its hard not to see that. All of our enemies eventually disappear. They may hurt us, kill us, convert some, but they can never defeat us, hence our longevity. Israel is the homeland to the Jews. The very thought of creating another homeland elsewhere is absurd. Look in the Torah. There is only one homeland and one capital, and it isnt in Alaska, Persia, or anywhere else.
16. I would suggest Siberia ,away from Canada
jery ,   Canada   (10.12.07)
17. Alaska Is Not Bad
Roman ,   Bremerton, USA   (10.12.07)
I'm from Alaska. Believe me, I know Alaska is not Eretz Yisrael, but Alaskas would love if we had more of a Jewish population. The Chabad Jews of Anchorage are famous throughout the state.
18. It's amazing when an article is refuted mathematically it
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (10.13.07)
isn't printed by Ynet. Are we so pompous that we can't understand Alaska only has 600,000 people as of this date. In 1940 you would be lucky to have 100,000 native Alaskan's in Alaska. Their would not have been any problems with native people's and Jews back in 1940 because their weren't very many natives to begin with. This book is flawed mathematically because we still only have 600,000 people today. Alaska is the biggest state in the United States. We could fit all 6 million Israeli's easily here. To write a book that characterizes Jews not being accepted with such a low population in Alaska to begin with is mathematically incorrect. Alaskan's don't strap on bomb belts to wipe the Jews off the face of the earth. We have a vibrant Jewish community and to besmirch Alaska because someone wrote a non fiction book about how Jews wouldn't of been accepted, and had to go to war with the native population, is labeling Alaskans and natives as anti semetic which they aren't. I find it fascinating that when an article is argued with a semblance of truth, that Ynet doesn't print the talkback, but lets its Jewish audience believe rubbish boogie man theatricks, about how Alaskans would have run the Jews into the sea. If you want to believe a non fiction book which is mathematically impossible so be it. I would think your readers could figure out 100,000 natives who live in small villages all over Alaska could not have run off two million Jews had they been allowed to come to Alaska in the first place. The more Jews the merrier I say.
19. the real Jews of Ak
Alan ,   Coffee Point Ak   (10.12.07)
Jews were in Alaska long before the Gold Rush of '98. The Alaska Packin Co. Jews. Rapinski Mountain. A jew. The claims of Natives to their land were originally facilitated through the efforts of a Jewish lawyer. And it is Natives not indians bozo who are the original inhabitants of the land. Natives and Jews have always been on excellent terms in Alaska. Now thanks to Achmad the terrible we see a twisted and insane scenario laid out.
20. I stand corrected, I checked the population of Alaska in
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (10.13.07)
1940. Their were 75,524 citizens then. 37762 were native indians and 37762 white settlers living here at the time. Congress made a huge mistake not letting the Jews come to Alaska. You guys would have a bridge to somewhere and Anchorage Alaska would have at least four million residents and look like Tel Aviv. We only have 350,000 residents currently. Congress also Laughed at William Seward and treated him like an idiot for buying Alaska in the first place. The congress shut down oil exploration across a lot of the state and can't seem to get a natural gas pipeline built when we are strapped to Arab oil platforms by the umbillical cord. Anotherwords, congress has basically seen to it that Alaska gets screwed every chance they get. That's why the Jews aren't here in the first place. The congress of the United States has no foresight or vision. They are the blind leading the blind. Come join us anytime, maybe our daffy government will release some of the land back to the citizens. Yeah I forgot, the government seized most of the land in Alaska which they don't allow anyone to build on........go figure that one out.
21. We are already there.....
Michael ,   USA   (10.13.07)
Anchorage has a wonderful Jewish population who affectionately call themselves "The Frozen Chosen." This loyal and diverse bunch keeps judaism alive & well up in Alaska and maintains a very active congregation.
22. #7, tried assimilation already. It does not work, sorry
Avi ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (10.14.07)
23. #12 Alin
Mark ,   UK   (10.14.07)
Iranians have lived in Iran for thousands of years and unlike the Israelis they never had to displace or kill the natives to settle down. Christians, Muslims and Jews lived peacefully in Palestine for hundreds of years. Of course, since you're a staunch supporter, a part of Romania can be earmarked for Israelis as their homeland. What do you think?
24. #13 Ziva
Ron ,   Canada   (10.14.07)
God in the Talmud says the Israelites will not have a homeland until the end of time unless they want to provoke God's wrath on themselves. Sixty years of killing and destroying is enough, and the countdown has started. Jews will never perish, they'll survive, don't worry so much.
25. Natives
Sarah ,   Australia   (10.14.07)
Did what is claimed in the Torah give Jews licence to kill, maim and destroy innocent people and Palestinian natives? Treating them like animals? Did your prophet Moses authorise this? You should be ashamed of yourself. According to your theory,in Americas for example, all natives should rise and reclaim their homeland because they had lived there before Colombus arrived.
26. #15 David from Boston
Sarah ,   Australia   (10.14.07)
Read my comment with the heading, Natives
27. Good Idea
Mark ,   UK   (10.14.07)
This is a brilliant idea. There are already lots of Jews living in peace in Alaska and very happy in there, I have Jewish friends living in Alaska. I'm sure if the Israelis were to be asked whether they prefer Alaska or any other land to be their homeland, they'd overwhelmingly welcome the idea. They must be sick and tired of living under the constant threat of suicide bombers, Iran, Hizbullah, bloodshed, etc. This should be given serious thought.
28. #11 Kev - He was writing in Canadian not English
meir elazar   (10.14.07)
29. #5, #15 - The Uganda suggestion was presented by Herzl
meir elazar   (10.14.07)
in the World Zionist Congress in 1903 (I think). We must first remember that Herzl sacrificed his life bringing forward the idea of Zionism which integrated with some of the following Aliyot and Keren Kayemet, buying land, and setting in motion the infrastructure to later receive the survivors of the Holocaust. Herzl prophetically stated "In Basel I created a Jewish State, in 5 years perhaps, but certainly in 50 everyone will see it." It was 50 years later that UN declared the Partition Plan. To those who faulted Herzl on his recommendation, first of all Herzl was at the end of his early life. He died a year later of consumption (TB) at the age of just 44. He saw the Dreyfus Affair and anti-Semitism across Europe and Russia, and wanted somehow to save Jews from the impending disaster. It was not more than an interim step but had it been taken, who knows how many Jews might have been save from the ovens of Auschwitz? And to those who bring up the problems with Herzl's children, remember that Moshe Rabeinu also was human and had problems with his children, Miriam, and Aharon with the Golden Calf (but Aharon is remember as Rodef Shalon in spite of this. One needs to look at the bright side as real Judaism teaches us). Persia was not a homeland when Jews were taken there by Nebuchadnezar. Nor were any of the other places homelands as Jews fled persecutions at the hands of Romans, Crusaders, Spaniards, etc. But the reality of survival is an integral part of our heritage. That is why we are still here today while all of the Empires and villainous regimes that sought to destroy us are all gone. Just as we have no right to judge anyone who survived the holocaust and the horrors that they endured and somehow survived, we should never attack anyone who presents ANY PLAN that would save Jewish lives. Furthermore, we must also remember ALL THE RIGHTEOUS GENTILES who risked their lives to save our brothers and sisters. We owe them a debt that can never be fully repaid. I also am indebted to the American soldiers who liberated my family from Bergen-Belsen concentration camp along with Raul Wallenberg who save some of my family. We must also remember these heroes. Meir Elazar A proud relative of Theodor Herzl
30. Give me a break Sara 21#..The Jews land was stolen
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (10.14.07)
from them by the Palestinians who are sitting on it in the first place. Do you really believe the Palestinians great great grandpa 10 times removed gave a crap about the Jews when they ran them out or slaughtered them for the land? If you want to give the native's their land back......you better start looking at the native Jews who were massacred and exiled from their land in the first place. The Palestinians have a broad plan of terror to drive out the Jews, no different than their ancestors who did before. By the way...are you a native Australian or our you sitting on a natives land?
