1. And now ?
charles ,   petach tikva   (10.11.07)
When i said some months ago that charidi women also were abused and badly treatred , i was insulted for being a liar . And now dear ....? [ i don't remember your name ]
2. Blame it on the left
Mike ,   Israel   (10.11.07)
I cant wait to see talk backs from these charidi folks claiming its all lies and claiming that they are perfect. They do the same with abuse of minors, "normal" human beings, paying taxes, serving the country. otherwise go back to your NYC and live life as you like but dont call yourself Jews, its embaracing.
3. Abused women
Shalom   (10.11.07)
It does happen - not necessarily physical abuse, but also sometimes verbal or mental abuse BUT it happens MUCH less than in the secular world. It's an evil and I am delighted that these suffering women are getting help, but don't suddenly think that all Hareidim are wife batterers - the vast majority adore and respect their wives.
4. This is PRECISELY why the 1st and 2nd Temple was destroyed!
Jonas ,   SAD   (10.11.07)
Read the Izaia 57 and 58, which we read on Yom Kippur! Ones who boast that they are big G-dloving and religious, but are like that on the outside, and are making the severest violations of mitzvot within their houses, THEY are a true problem! Not a secular atheist who does good deeds, although he does not feast on Yom Kippur or drives his car on Shabat! He has more Torah in himslef than these hypocrits! Of course, the ideal would be a pious man who does good deeds - a pious and good at the same time.
5. #1 - I wonder if the guy who accused you
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (10.11.07)
...is Dacron, or whatever he calls himself. Everytime I make a comment on Agunot he insists I am not only a Christian, but a nun, as those are the worse things a person can be! I always ask him politely to explain why Judaism has Agunot (and not Agunim) but for some reason he never replies to that one. You can find "Puskas" (donation boxes) for the shelter for abused Charidi women in many shops in Tel Aviv in secular neighborhoods. My bet is that you won't find them in religious neighborhoods, because the orthodox are too busy denying that there are any abused women in their communities.
6. Haredi or not ....it is an animal instinct.. to
ben ,   singapore   (10.11.07)
abuse you own wife.Yes ! it is true that these haredi have been doing such acts..i also heard of cases that such thing happens at the sabbath table....some young haredi grew up in such broken environment seen their mothers being abused verbally and physically. Now it is time for these new generations haredi’s defend the daughters of zion.. It is a disgrace to the very hallmark of Torah Values to abuse women Not a NICE THING TO DO ! The beths must not pretend play a blind game on issues of demestic violance. ben singapore
7. While very sad it is not unexpected
Daniel ,   Tel Aviv   (10.11.07)
The Haredi community is known for all kinds of domestic violence and it's closed door policies. With Rabbis finally allowing women to report their abuse and declaring it forbidden, it is expected that the numbers of people who do so will rise. The question is, how many of the husbands are then prosecuted? Are any of them persecuted socially? Are they shunned? Or are their beaten wives?
8. Shalom
charles ,   petach tikva   (10.11.07)
It's probably only the top of the iceberg who becomes public in the charidi world , in the secular it's almost every case . And look also at the % , that's maybe more important than in the secular society .
9. Outwardly a religious Jew, at home
(10.11.07)
a wife abuser. You don't fool anyone, especially G-d. Why do you carry on this way?
10. Don't read "haredi women" - read "sephardi 'haredi' women"
sorry that's the cas   (10.11.07)
11. re #3 : adore, my foot!!!!!
a b_d ,   the far north   (10.11.07)
FYI, most haradi men don't "adore" their wives. They basically lead completely separate lives from their wives, what with the women working inside or outside the house and they themselves spending the day from early in the morning to late at night studying or praying with other men. Why do you suppose most abuse in this community happens on Shabbat evening - it's because basically this is the first time all week (since the previous Shabbat) that the men and women have sat down to dinner at the same time and have actually exchanged a few words with each other.
12. Dorothy
charles ,   petach tikva   (10.11.07)
No it was a woman , not this daCON . You know some bipedes also accuse me for being a baptist minister [ what is this ? ], one of them is always talking about jesus , but tells us that he is a reform convert . A convert [ ? ] who always attacks the Rabbanim , the Jewish calendar , who did not ask any question when יהודי was not mentionned on his new ID , and so on .
13. #10 And how do you know that?
Chaya ,   Bat Yam, Israel   (10.11.07)
14. Sorry Dorothy, you lose...
Barry ,   Tel Aviv   (10.11.07)
your bet. There are many shops in Bnei Brak, Jerusalem, Elad and Modiin Elite that have these pushkahs. If you, (and I include David Regev) would read Chareidi newspapers from time to time, you would see that these issues are discussed occasionally.
15. Hey Guys, You Speak of People...
ER ,   Canada   (10.11.07)
…I don’t know! I hang around various haredi families quite a bit and find them to be very loving, family-orientated individuals. While I am sure the Orthodox world must suffer some of the same family dysfunctions as does society as a whole, I would be very surprised, based on the individuals I personally know, if the frequency of spousal abuse was not lower than society as a whole. Bear in mind that the Haredi community attracts, and welcomes into their synagogues wayward Jews, many of whom are mentally unstable. Some of these individuals had been the outcasts of dysfunctional secular Jewish families and some I met are almost beyond help. But it is not fair to discredit the whole movement by the actions of the few who do not abide by the basic tenets of Judaism, especially if they are just hangers-on.
16. Hi Charles -
Shalom   (10.11.07)
Good to hear from you. I disagree. Remember, I live in a 100% hareidi community and I am no man's fool. #11 - Yes - if you were ever privileged to spend a Shabbat meal at a Chareidi family you would see the affection and esteem in which the average Chareidi male (self included), holds his wife. The very fact that many of them do work so hard, is in itself deserving of the highest level of respect.
17. #14 - Well I'm glad
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (10.11.07)
There should be. It isn't clearly marked that it's for the Haredi shelter, but if you can read between the lines, so to speak you can tell. The drawing of the woman is without a faces, dressed in long sleeves, long skirt and covered head. The child she is with is a boy, also faceless and wearing a cap. Pretty obvious.
18. #10 - Oh, there are no Ashkenazi abusers?
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (10.11.07)
Yeah, right. With comments like that, it's no wonder why many Sephardim see Ashkenazim as racist.
19. Spare the rod, spoil the woman
Arielush ,   Ramat Ha Golan   (10.11.07)
Why am I not surprised by this news? In the Harredi world women are second class citizens. They have to sit at the back of the bus. They huddle behind the mehitzah while the men do important things like pray. Once someone is a second hand citizen they are less than human. And for the woman in this world the only course is the Beit Din which is also phallocentric.
20. YNET loves this crap..fills their agenda
Al   (10.11.07)
to beat up on religious Jews day in day out.. The shturma would be proud.
21. You all miss the point
AK   (10.11.07)
While spousal abuse exists in every segment of society, dedicated world-saving atheistic communists and haredi included, it is good to know that rabbis publicly and harshly condemn such behavior and encourage reporting such an abuse to the police. That is an important step forward.
22. oh come on
ana ,   israel   (10.11.07)
you people are always looking for a reason to talk bad about the haredim. i'm sure there is abuse among the haredim, because if you haven't noticed, they're people too. just like there can be bad chilonim, there can be bad haredim. but why does everyone immediately jump and say you see! haredim are terrrible! they're wife beaters! the haredim that i know are very family oriented and hold their wives in high regard, it is written "eishet chayil ateret bala" that the woman is the crown of her husband, and as far as i know most haredim act accordingly. but of course, people are people and there are exceptions. but it's so nasty that some of you always put everyone who is not like you down.
23. 'The most private Moments"
Barry Silverberg ,   Kiriat Shmna   (10.11.07)
Why is there an ad for a porn site under an article in the "Jewish World " section. This must be most repugnant to Uri Orbach and the other writers, if they know it isthere. There must be other places in Y net where people can find pornography: why does it ahve to be ajacent to a serious site about the jewish Word? Barry Silverberg
24. Abused
Ary ,   Los Angeles   (10.11.07)
It's a cheap sensational article. The writer L Bratman does not cite any names of people to support his article. Atty Korman and Rabbi Yosef who are the 2 names refernced were not supporting the article or his statements. He cites "hotlines". Why doesn't he have the "writer's ethic" and give the names of the particular hotlines he spoke to? This "rabbi" is a sham. He thinks that by bashing haredim he will score points in the public's eyes as someone who is "enlightened" and not chareidi. I know his type.
25. ynet hates haredim and Israel in general
jack bauer ,   see u on jpost   (10.12.07)
need more proof then the constant articles about this sort of stuff? If ynet(english) shuts down, I for one will miss the laughs, the anger and the informative talkbacks that I have become accustomed to reading here
26. #10, stop being a bigot
JewishDragonfly ,   Torrance, CA   (10.12.07)
Loshen hara against an entire community is even worse than it is against an individual. You owe an apology to each of the millions of Sephardim in the world for that close minded statement.
27. Why attacking the charidim ?
charles ,   petach tikva   (10.12.07)
Because we are awaiting higher standards of behaviour from religious people . Religious schools are giving a better education , you all claim , so their pupils have to behave "better" too . Or do those schools not give a "better" education ? They are not only bond by state laws as everyone else , but also by religious laws .
28. I love the womens section of the shul
Nomi   (10.12.07)
and pray there almost every week. Even in the gorgeous moshav where we visit our kids on the GOLAN. We are an ordinary regular shomer shabbat /kashrut family, nothing more nothing less. So cut the stereo type krap oh ye northern man.
29. ME, beating my wife..........?
joe   (10.12.07)
It's also the tip of the proverbial Iceberg. That is what religion and his teachings ( or interpretation ) does to a fanatic --- jew or muslim, no difference.-----Back of the bus, covered head to toe, sagregated in shull, the keep your mouth shut, the children assembly line factory, etc., etc., AND since Shabbat is holy, it's normal for the HE man of the family to show " his gang " who is the boss. I like attorney Noah Korman's statement " Violence brings great shame on an orthodox family "---Implying that IT DOES NOT in the secular family.
30. Common Pattern in Minorities
C McCoy ,   Canada   (10.12.07)
Part of the problem stems from the lack of trust minorities tend to have in the police and justice system. Therefore, they are much more reluctant to report abuse. Here in Canada, abuse among Natives (Indians) and Indo-Canadians (East Indians) is worse than among the general population.
