As a character stated in Aristophanes' "The Frogs", "I refuse to be convinced by the facts". Bigotry, prejudice, hatred are all manefestations of violence which is not rational in it's very nature. Why expect anything related to violence to make sense?
64. Comment #37 for #14 . Now....
Yakov   (10.19.07)
A legacy from Soviet times is that outside the big city (Minsk), there are much fewer services available. Much of resources go to Minsk and whatever else that remains goes to the rest of the country. This applies to services as well.
65. jack bauer , don't believe your own eyes
Anna ,   Montreal, Canada   (10.19.07)
Lukashenko crashed the opponents far before the elections. If you would really understand KGB mentality you will never right what you wrote.
66. #58, It's a lot cleaner in Toronto
Rich ,   Toronto, Canada   (10.19.07)
than anywhere in Israel. That's one reason why Toronto is number 15th in the world in the quality of living, and no city in Israel can claim to be on that level. And Toronto is not alone. Vancouver is #3 and Ottawa is #19 in the quality of living, and there is no Israeli city even close to those numbers. Tel Aviv is 105th place and that city looks horrible. I hope this will be a wakeup call to fix up the country.
67. #53, Don't make excuses, just clean up the country
Rich ,   Toronto, Canada   (10.19.07)
For your information, Abu Dhabi and Dubai are tied for 58th place in the quality of living in the world. The best city in Israel is Tel Aviv, and that's 105th place. You can go right online and see pictures of those two Arab cities. The architecture of the buildings is very impressive, and the streets are cleaner than in Israel.
68. #54 This is what I am talking about
Josh   (10.19.07)
Stereotype? This is the anti-semitism card I am talking about. He did not say all Jews were filthy as you imply. You cannot use an absolute on criticism when walking before the eyes of the world. I have no question that there are many who will take his comments and put them into their anti-semetic rhetoric with other tid-bits they gathered in their quest to blame the Jews. This is the least of our fears as they will collect truth and lies alike. There is a saying, if someone hates you the way you hold your spoon will bother them. I will further this by saying, if it makes them uncomfortable to see the way you hold your spoon, eat breakfast lunch and dinner with a spoon. As you might say, have a backbone and do not hide and allow it to ruin their every day thinking about your spoon. Soon the world will watch the spoon think its no big deal and recognize their petty criticism is hate driven rambings of a madman. If however you use a anti-semitic card everytime, you will wear it out and the rules of the game will change to your disfavor. Soon everyone at the table will hate you and start looking at the way you hold your spoon. There is not a dignitary that doesnt see him commit political suic*de. If however we react like the Muslims do when a cartoon is published, the world will forget him and focus on you. All this doesnt change the fact that we have issues at home we need to address. Now is as good a time as any to address the issues. In the righteous world it is the truth that is the line a good society needs to walk. If you spilled food on your shirt and someone said "What a pig you are", you could deny there is food on your shirt, scream anti-semite at the top of your lungs, and lunge at him over the table to show you have backbone. He may not say it again, but if you dont clean the food off of your shirt, someone else will be saying the same thing and they will take pictures to prove it. This time behind your back where you cannot defend as was the case in Germany. When some one is right, they are right regardless of how tacky they are in saying it. If you walk a line of truth regardless of your anger and chose your battles wisely you can win the war. The world respects that, not a constant shout of anti-semitism. If you make petty claims of anti-semitism when even Jews cannot detect anti-semitism in the comments, you lose face and fall prey to the trap of jumping on innuendo. He knew the remarks were right on the line - he is a politican. You must understand not everyone who sees the article will understand the source nor will they look deep enough to uncover anti-semitism in the context. They will only see that he criticized the way a city was treated. He is using the truth against us and if we deny the truth we will look bad not he. He knows this, lets foil his attack by apologizing for the mess which is what you do when guests visit and see a mess (which really exists) and showing him we are cleaning up our cities as a result of his input. Then we can schedule a re-visit to show him how he helped us and how we can take it on the chin like a gentleman not like a thug looking for a fight to prove our backbone exists. It takes a bigger backbone to admit a flaw. The world will respect us more than if we cry anti-semite and continue leaving our cities (some of them) dirty like a lazy teanager who wont clean his room and gives the world the finger. Every religion has concern about this land - get use to it. Lets move onward and upward. Lets keep our camp as if G-d walks through it. This will make us feel better about ourselves (which will drive the economy and stop the brain drain), make the world feel better about the holy land being taken care of, and silence the detractors of the light to all nations, Israel.
69. Rich your good at avoiding the issues you have
Mike ,   Israel   (10.19.07)
But they are not going to solved by ignoring them as you know thats why you lock yourself in your litle wood houses after dark keeping your childern out of harms way, and if your luck you wont get hit with a home invasion or a stray bulet. Its you that needs to wake up and clean your act and not beilve all that you read. Realty is very much diffrent than articles you read or someone's impresion of statstics. Amazing for an educated part of the world how you swollow this crap. get real
70. #69, You are talking ignorance and it wont help your reality
Rich ,   Toronto, Canada   (10.19.07)
Canada is nicer than in Israel on every level. Don't make excuses! Clean up your country and get back to me. Maybe the quality of life there, something you don't know much about, will go up a few notches.
71. I shall join this garbage-fest...

77. Bobruisk, Jews and Lukashenko's cretinism
Alexander ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (10.19.07)
In the Russian-speaking Internet community, Bobruisk is the proverbial example of a God-forsaken hell hole where no sane person would want to live. When you want to tell someone to go screw themselves, you tell them to "go to Bobruisk". Bobruisk was a Jewish city once, but it's been a long time since. There's currently less than 55 000 Jews in the entire country, so Bobruisk with its population of 230 000 couldn't possibly be called a Jewish city even if all the Belorussian Jews lived in it (which they don't). Lukashenko is simply trying to guilt-trip the rich Jews into investing into his country- but being a cretin that he is, he came out sounding anti-Semitic. I loathe to defend the guy, but let's not confuse idiocy for malice.
78. fine, go ahead and blame yushenko for what stalin did
jack bauer   (10.20.07)
by why stop there, just blame him for everything else as well nobody pointed out what he said that was anti semetic if calling a crappy town a pig sty because its dirty, then when I say most cities in china are dirty like a pig sty do I hate jews? I love jews and Israel, but that doesnt mean I hate everyone else btw the KGB are the "baddies"
79. 67 thank the bangladeshis for keeping their streets clean
jack bauer   (10.20.07)
have you ever seen a saudi actually do anything physical? you couldnt have because they dont work....they pay pakis and bagledeshis etc to work for them. Dubai and abu dhabi are similar
80. Lukashenko
Duas ,   LA, USA   (10.20.07)
People, get real. Look who's making comments. This lad needs a psychiatrist, not a microphone. Minsk and Pinsk, Gawd, ages behind the ass of the world. He only would like some sentimental idiots to go back to homes of their grandpas and invest. The only comment I really liked is #2. Borat is the only answer.
81.  Tel-Aviv Bust station
brian ,   ashkelon israel   (10.20.07)
Yes it is the dirtiest place in T.A and I dont like going there. But it is not a Jewish quarter (Not only Jews live and work in T.A.) Its an area of foreign workers most of them illegal. Years ago our school children spent a day a month cleaning up the streets of their sweet papers etc., but that stopped. Dont know why. Every City in Every Country has areas like this, but the worst I have ever seen ? 1. Cairo, London, Paris. Each has its own slum area. Even Dubai, go round the back streets and see the ORDINARY people living in sh&*$.
82. Belarus
Sergei ,   Belarus   (10.20.07)
It was disgasting to read this coarse words and damnation. Nice people as You try to be do not behave like this. You`d better read this. Comments of the Ambassador of Belarus made at request of the Israeli media on the position spread by Israel Foreign Minister's Bureau on October 18, 2007 Ambassador of Belarus: I know that President treats Jewish people with respect and sympathy. More than four years I served as one of the Assistants to the President Alexander Lukashenko. I know his kind attitude towards Jewish people. And I can say that to the people originating from Belarus his attitude is especially warm. The Head of the State has repeatedly said that for Belarus these people are still dear and not strangers. They are addressees of the words of the President said in July 2006: "we are not indifferent to their lives…There is conflict there – it hurts". During past five or six centuries Jewish people felt secure and safe on Belarusian lands – as nowhere they did in the region. This traditionally kind concern is being preserved in the present-day Belarus. Belarus and anti-Semitism are incompatible notions. Even quite subjective international Jewish agencies acknowledge that in our country Jewish people are treated nicer than in the other countries of the region. If we take Bobruisk, then this is so indeed that it was a city with a large in number (at times prevalent) Jewish population. This summer I visited Bobruisk with the group of the heads of the Belarusian diplomatic missions abroad. At present the Jewish community in Bobruisk is not so large. But the city is literally saturated by Jewish history of the place. It is remembered and taken care of. It is pride of the city. Visiting Bobruisk, in this city, in the capacity of the Ambassador to the State of Israel I was most popular head of the Belarusian diplomatic mission. In fact the city was renewed and got prettier. – The citizens supported by the state tried to welcome with dignity the republican harvest festival. Renewed and reconstructed Bobruisk is a tribute of respect and remembrance to numerous generations of Jews – natives of the city.

Joe Sexsmith ,   Bristol, US   (10.20.07)
how shameful this piece of filth is unbelievable! what a clown !!
85. Josh, #68, I Wholly Disagree
Jerry Sussman ,   Alexandria, USA   (10.21.07)
So it is wrong to scream antisemitism every time someone criticizes someone who happens to be a Jew? And it is wrong to scream antisemitism if one calls a Jew a "pig" because he happened to spill some food on his shirt while the Jew dined? It is wrong, you suggest, because it is akin to "crying wolf" once too often; besides, you say, the world will see for themselves. Nonsense, I say. What you ignore in your comment is the fact that he singled "the Jews" out. Lukashenko attributed to the Jews--rightly or wrongly--a negative trait which, by all accounts, pertained to Jew and gentile alike. The mere act of singling Jews out was the offense. Nor was the offense so trivial as to warrant overlooking. The slander that Jews are filthy is a bedrock of antisemitism. When a leader of a European country makes a charge such as Lukashenko, it certainly warrants rebuttal. And it sure sounded antisemitic to me. Sit silent and let the world see for themselves? See what? By your account, the comments were not antisemitic. Rather, simply an observation of the facts, whether the facts were true or not. So to what should the world react? If the Jews don't see it as antisemitic, why should anyone else? Rather, it is buried among the subconscious of those who hear it, to be brought to the conscious mind when later circumstances suit, along with all th other calumnies against the Jews. And for your analogy that if a spoon offends, one should use a spoon day long, I can only infer that, if the Jews are dirty, they should continue to be so even more. What kind of advice is that? Concede that Jews are filthy, and bring more filth to Belarus? I think not. I believe in meeting charges head on, not ignoring them and not continuing to do the very same behavior against which the charges were made.

hey dushbag, how about me and you take a walk in bed sty well see how clean NYC is why don't you go and stick your head in the sand
87. Lukashenko is bad? Look at the talkbacks!
Korem ,   New York, USA   (10.21.07)
What is wrong with all of you? I can't believe this. "Tel Aviv is dirty because of those FILTHY RUSSIAN Jews!" Dizengoff is smelly because of those "DAMN MORROCAN JEWS!" I don't care what Lukashenko said anymore! The fact that so many of you so quickly blame Israel's problems on Jews of whatever nationality you hate at the moment is far more disgusting than anything the Belarus president says!
88. Bobruisk
Greg ,   New York City   (10.21.07)
i for one am not a fan of Bobruisk...BUT...even if our people kept that city clean, he'd find some other reason to hate us. there's always a new reason concocted. ALWAYS something.
89. President Lukashenko is misguided
Shelley Goldstone ,   London, UK   (10.21.07)
I've found from my experience that communities often tend to reflect the socioeconomic status of their inhabitants: wealthy people have resources to maintain the aesthetic value of their communities; the poor generally do not. I do not believe that Mr Lukashenko is antisemitic, rather I believe he has taken the very convenient deflection of blaming Jews. It is said that societies can be judged by how well they acknowledge their mistakes without pinning the blame on another party; unfortunately, Belorussia's president has failed this test.
90. Jews with money are welcome?
