RobertK ,   Jerusalem   (11.21.07)
Pardon me, but was it an American who killed Rabin? An awful lot of Israelis, not only American ones, didn't like your peace. We didn't like getting blown to pieces. We didn't like that you lefties brought a terrorist army and set it up outside our population centers and gave it money, guns, and lots of kisses and hugs. Pack up your kibbutz and go live in northern Siberia, I heard they're still making room there for sicko Stalinists with their commie dreams.
32. The wizard of Oz
eddie ,   london Uk   (11.21.07)
The writer of fiction , Amos Oz is writing more fiction and trying to pass it of as reality. The same Oz who in the late 80s would make bold statements that "it woudl be easier to break the back of a young palestinian army than a young palestinian stone thrower", is now joining Olmert in making love to his enemy and not peace. We have at least 3 palestinian armies , the hamas in gaza, and the PA + Hamas inthe west bank. Olmert is arming the PA. The PA are doing some acting now, like Arafat did, arresting the usual suspects for the conference, and will release them a fw weeks later, as Arafat did. When it came to fighting the young hamas army, the PA all ran away, and left their israeli supplied weapons for the now not so oyunghamas army, who the IDF nwo says is becoming like Hizbulla. Barak + Olmert are speaking in gestures, but not doing anything, no power cuts, no invasion, and can only intercept 3% of the kassam teams. Oz is performing his verbal wizardry and speaking in backwards logic. His false dilemma is either we give in to the PA or we will get Iran onthe west bank. Yet his/olmert's formula was precisely what created Hamasistan on Gaza - backed by Hizbulla and Iran. Will the PA in the west bank be able/willing to defeat hamas? Well, so far, the evidence says no. So, within a few months of a PA government of the west bank, there will be a hamas coup.
33. making peace is not worthwhile...
Ezra ,   Tel Aaviv   (11.21.07)
Amos Oz accuses the right of not wanting to make peace . He could not be so dead wrong! Everyone wants peace but at what price, peace? This is the whole point. The left, which Oz represents wants peace at any price and is delusional. The right wants peace for the right price, no more no less and therefore demands reciprocity from the Arabs and has red lines. That is sensible. Oz, sorry but you are out of touch with the views of the majority of Israel which has the correct and right approach.
34. Ok with OZ.
cfs ,   Tlse, FRANCE   (11.21.07)
I am ok with Amos OZ.
35. #5, Yigal Amir is Israeli as were all his co-conspirator
Danny   (11.21.07)
I know the Israeli education system is [apparently] in the pan but you should know that....
36. #16, now we know you are a wind-up merchant
Danny   (11.21.07)
You quoting the Gaza withdrawal as evidence of what? Need for further withdrawals? Withdrawals lead to peace? Maybe you can trumpet how leaving Lebanon gave Israel quiet northern borders.
37. #9 Danny - Visionary???
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (11.21.07)
You can't be a blind visionary. I think you meant he has hallucinations, probably from thinking about peace too much, also known as utopian fantasies.
38. Fool!
PE Haberman ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (11.21.07)
Amos Oz is a fool. It is not our responsibility to prop up Abbas and his ilk and make them appear as credible peace partners. Abbas is a weak and ineffective leader. His weakness stems from his failure to condemn terrorists attacks, let alone halt the infiltrations from territory he controls. The extremists are those who, in the face of reality, cling to a false belief that we can make peace with these murderers. Having won our existence on the field of battle, Oz and his band of fools would gladly dismantle the State and hand it over to Abbas and his corrupt murdering gang.
39. Oz, others have paid for your delusions in blood.
AK   (11.21.07)
You are either a zelot or insane, either way you're a danger to the Israeli society. Play games and risk your own like, if you wish, but don't gamble with the lives of others.
40. #1 Left doesn't mean secular and secular doesn't mean Left
AK   (11.21.07)
Shas members may have many children but Shas party is not a party of the patriots any more than the ultra-Left parties are. What is Shas doing in Olmert's government just now?
41. Terry, you said it well.
AK   (11.21.07)
42. third way
art ,   Los Angeles, Usa   (11.21.07)
There is one more way to resolve the Palestinian problem: Offer them reasonable amount of money to leave the territories forever. Wait for 5-6 year and then remove all Arabs who still remain forcefully.
43. Oz, your screed is not about peace but about Nobel Prize
(11.21.07)
44. #37, was being sarcastic, sure it was clear
Danny   (11.21.07)
45. Oz misses the core issue and have a very short sight
Keren ,   Israel-SP   (11.22.07)
in my opinion. Can´t he see that those Israel is dealing with ,REFUSE to recognize Israel as a Jewish State? Can´t he see what has been happening even BEFORE 1967? What makes him believe Israel´s enemies have changed and that essays to bomb restaurants and buses will stop(G´od forbid) or that kasans will ever stop(G´od forbid too)? The solution is beyond Oz old thinking. It is ,maybe (maybe)here: http://israelinitiative.com/default.aspx
46. #45 good stuff
brooklynshmou ,   nyc   (11.22.07)
NOw I'd like to have what #45 is smoking...talk about escaping from reality!!
47. Hey Danny Boy!
Zeal ,   Isramerica   (11.22.07)
Miss me Danny boy? Thought I disappeared, did you? Not quite. I've been paying some attention to some events around here, and I've done a little more research. Took me a while to find your alias. Anyway, time to continue the program: Mossad Watch. First, let us take note of one opinion article- it mentioned Johnathan Pollard. To review, Johnathan Pollard was a Mossad agent who obtained the names of American spies living in the Soviet Union and gave them to Israel. Soviet spies who had infiltrated Israeli spy units, relayed the information to their country; ultimately his carelessness ended in the deaths of dozens of Americans. That figures, doesn''t it? If you Zionists can pry Pollard loose from where he's held, that would prove the extent of Israel's power in America. Next:, startling history: August 27, 1980: the American ambassador to Lebanon, John Gunther Dean, and his family, were attacked by 21 rifle bullets and 2 anti-tank grenades en route to the American University in Beirut. The assassination attempt was nearly successful had it not been for the ambassador's car being armored and equipped with self-inflating tires. The assassins fled, dropping their weapons. These weapons were later determined to have been manufactured in the United States and delivered to Israel in 1974; and yet they were used to attack the American ambassador (who is, ironically, a Jew by the way). That builds on two points I made in the last argument we had Danny boy: 1. Assassinations in Lebanon could very well be the work of the state of Israel. Had the attackers succeeded, it would be blamed on various suspects. 2. Israel is most certainly not America's friend and therefore does not deserve a fraction of the billions upon billions of UNCONDITIONAL, I repeat, UNCONDITIONAL, aid, weapons, benefits etc... It amazes me how absolutely paranoid you Israelis are. You hate EVERYBODY! Even in some other forum you accused America, your number one supporter, your UNCONDITIONAL (I repeat a third time because you may still not get it) partner of destroying Israel. I leave you to your twisted denials, you zionist fiend. FREE PALESTINE!!!
48. To Danny #9. Then Mr. Oz's Vision Is USELESS !!!
Maansingh ,   The Netherlands   (11.22.07)
IF that was the vision of Mr. Amos Oz in 2000 -- then there is NO need to trust his present vision, as worded in his present article !! MEANING : NO one, not even PM Olmert, should take Mr. Oz's vision seriously !! AS the saying goes : once burnt, twice shy. BTW Terry #3 wrote again a clear-to-comprehend, up-to-the-point, down-to-earth, free-from-chaff talkback. BTW islamofascism is being exported by Saudi Arabia, Iran -- so, Israel should NOT cave-in to their demands of land, right of return, Jerusalem. Israel should remain STRONG !!!
49. To Amos Oz and all Israelis, Palestinines, Arabs, Moslems
Khalil Abo Mohammad ,   Ein Karem, Al Quds   (11.22.07)
This will not fly. The only solution that will end this forever is this: Set an international body (UN) to restore all property back to the real owners as it was before May 1948 ( use Jordan, UK and Turkey records as guidence) then allow all such people either to live in, sell or lease such property at thire choice. NEXT is free elections in historical Palestine from Jordan Rev to Midt SEA. Compensate the owners for the usage of such property for the last 60 years and do the same to the JEWS who left Arab countries at the same time. End of zoinizim and imperiallizim. There is no other way forward except living by the sward and ending also by sward for Jews or Arabs and Muslims. Say 16 millions as oppose to 1.5 billions, the result is well known. Make your choice befor it is too late. I would like to see Amos Oz response to this one.
50. to redmiik
sawsan ,   jerusalem   (11.22.07)
please say that the palastinians want hudna becouse they are the enemy .... but do not say the islam and shareeaa .. or you want your enemy to be evry where in turkey and pakistan also ,,let it israil palastin conflect // it is better to israil and to palastinians
51. #50 - sadly it is Islam and not the Palestinians!
redmiike ,   tel aviv and london   (11.22.07)
Muslims state very clearly what their goal is! Islam will control Belgium and Holland within 20 years and probably most of Scandinavia too and Switzerland will be on the brink. Sarcozy will fight but France will probably go too because he arrived too late! Democracy and Sharia are the choices, and some countries decided to late! The implication is so horrible that I can understand people who don't or can't look it in the eye .. As in the 30's some saw the writing and some didn't but some saw it and didn't want to .. Mike
52. The left and right in Israel are not like elsewhere!
redmiike ,   tel aviv   (11.22.07)
The left and right in Israel has not only lost all meaning but has pretty much become the reversed and foreign readers should understand this. The 'left' in Israel (like Beilin) live in the most expensive parts of Israel and in general live off of the fat of the land in villas! The so called 'right' are giving their money and their time and are living in caravans in dangerous places. The left in Israel are takers and the right are givers!
53. Amos Oz's Boring and angerous Proposals.
Ephraim Rubinger ,   Miami, USA   (11.22.07)
Amos, BIG yawn ..Amos - in case no one has informed you: We've been there, done that and even got the t-short. Oh, and we also lost 1,400 Jews to Arab violence and terror. Amos, you are great writer of fiction but please, please, never confuse fiction with reality.
54. Mr Oz , a read a few of your books and i enjoyed them
dafer ,   jerusalem   (11.23.07)
just like i enjoyed this artical .. please keep up the good work........
55. it is ammazing and so unfair that 90% of the talkbacks
dafer ,   jerusalem   (11.23.07)
are written by so many kahana's , we need more good thinkers like mr oz instead of all those crazy high on drugs kahanas ..........
56. You must recognize this is muslim land
Mohammed   (11.23.07)
Peace can only come when you recognizd the injustice of Zionism and the need to return the land of Palestine to its rightful Palestinian owners. This is waqf land and is holy and cannot be stolen by non Muslims. Go back to Europe or America and have peace. You know you are a stranger in our land and we will never accept you.
57. to 51
50 ,   jerusalem   (11.23.07)
so you trust that it is not the palastinians ... and please trust that it is not the islam //god say about the believers that they believe on one god and believe on the judgment of god and believe that only god knows the future .. it is enough to tell that only god know about the real moslemes keep god judgment in evry doing and let the future to god for his knowing
58. to mohammad
fawkeyya ,   jerusalem   (11.23.07)
it is only my land // i was borned here .i love it more than you .but i can not give it to any one even to you .. /any one steal any thing ,he thinks it is own // but sure i do not steal but i tell it is mine .. simply becouse it is mine
59. oy oz illogical
Alan ,   Cape Disappointment   (11.23.07)
Oz writes: "The main burden of progress is on the shoulders of the Israeli government and Israeli public opinion, because Israel is the one controlling the Palestinian territories and not the other way around. " If ever there was an illogical and nonsensical notion. By this notion, it was the fault of the allies that Germany Nazis power arose, because the allies controlled Germany after WWI. By this logic, the main burden toward peace in Iraq falls on the US and not the murderers in Al Qaqeda. What is this fallacy? It is that the murders are innocent and those who uphold democracy and want peace are guilty. Oz go write a plan to defang a rose. Your foray into diplomacy is a disaster. Your following has left. You are not Moses. But you should live in exile.
60. the wizard of oz
Bobby Goodman ,   PAris, France   (11.23.07)
Of course, Amos Oz is right. Both sides are afraid to do away with the power of the extremists. How to do that? I dont know. Israelis are afraid for ideological and economic reasons, cause the settler movement is rich with US Jewish money, and tell me, why is it that US Jews most involved with Israel on every level are right wingers. And Palestinians are afraid to cut off the extremists cause they will be killed. Number 49 Khalil is dreaming. Historic Palestine was a feudal entity until radical Jews came and shook it up with their socialism. thank god they did!! the answer for both sides? More jobs, more sex, less religion and religious guns and rockets, more sex, and a lot of good marijuana
