A state that claims to be a democracy cannot also be an ethnocracy/theocracy. Israel must compromise its Jewish character if it still wishes to be recognized as a democratic state. True, Jews should have Israel as an official state, but not at the expense of others i.e. Palestinian Muslims and Christians, Druze, Bahai, etc. The US may have a majority Christian population, but it has never called itself a Christian state. Perhaps Israel should begin comparing itself with better models of democracy rather than resorting to cheap comparisons to Muslim/Arab states with which it allies itself (e.g. Egypt, Jordan).

Citizens of many faiths in Israel pay taxes so that a branch of the Prime Minister's Office, the Conversion Authority, can actively convert people to Judaism. This is absolutely wrong, as is all public funds going to preface one religion over another. Israel can be a democratic state with a Jewish character and majority, but religion should be a personal choice and not a govt sponsored activity.

We should not be surprised by this. The Roman Empire, and its successor....the Vatican have a history of destroying the Jewish state. Let's not forget that Rome is the reason why there is even a contest over the land today. The Romans deported the Jews out of Eretz Yisrael into all reaches of the Empire, allowing others to move in and take over. Fast forward to the late 1800s to today, when our people come back...there are squatters in our homes. Now what? I think that the Roman patriarch in Jerusalem should ponder and reflect how many lives may be lost from his reckless, adventurist proclamations.
