We are not very good with gurella warfare. We are more the intelligent stragtic type nation. History shows this. How is anyone suppose to stop rockets being fired from a bunch of thugs who fire them from civilian areas and then run underground and hide like cowards.

when the second lebanon war began. where are the old-school military moves?? sharon was the only one who could have turned the whole thing into perfection!

Marcel ,   Florida   (12.31.07)
Olmert's twisted view of reality is based on his obedience to his master in Washington who put forward the ceasefire with the French before the U.N.. ISRAEL WAS PREVENTED FROM VICTORY BY THE US TO SAVE THE ARABS FROM ANOTHER DEFEAT.
6. Knesset Leb 2 Report
Mo ,   US   (12.31.07)
So the Knesset report faults IDF and fails to assign political blame blowing that task onto the Winograd Committee - knowing that Committee months ago already stated it will not assign blame. What a disgrace - the Knesset refuses to say the political leadership failed - and keeps its job by not voting the govt a No Confidence and bring down the this inapt failed government leadership. They too are a failure. So sad. Where are the people. Yet who is there to lead ? All play a waiting game doomed to further failure. Rome burns

Strategic thinking and guerrilla warfare are not in opposition. Remember the Maccabees or the wars against the Philistines (the real ones not the fakestinians). What impairs Israel´s ability to wipe the arab guerrillas, thing that was done quite well until the 90s, is the IDF having to fight with one arm tied because the blackmail of our perceived friends in the world: the other democracies.
8. Propaganda - We did just fine
Josh   (12.31.07)
It wasn't a cake walk, but much was accomplished. If the world had stayed out of it and we finished the job, they couldn't spread this propaganda thta "we failed" or "that we lost". I hope everyone is seeing through what the media is doing. It is like the spies in Torah, they want us not to believe in our abilities when G-d is with us. Well I believe Hahem is with us when we do Torah and I think the more we do the real Torah the more strength we have against our enemies. Don't participate in Sylvester. That will inject some loyalty into the equasion. Take a break on Shabbat and give others a break and dont go to restaurants on the Shabbat. Doing so adds to our military sucesses.

10. Lebanon war
Mohammad ,   Jordan   (12.31.07)
First of all, the second lebanon war was not the fault of the IDF nor the israelie government. It was simply a guerrilla war which super powers such as USA (against vietnam) and USSR (in Afganstan) could not won, and no army could have a decisive victory in such a war. On the other hand, i dont understand what the israelies are complaining about??!! The political outcome of the war was quite positive for Israel, and now, Hizbullah's arsenal wont be used against israel. Instead it will be used in the coming lebanon civil war.
11. the junior officers and commanders must be allowed freedom
jack bauer   (12.31.07)
to react to whatever situation is before them.....having to call the upper echelons for permission for every move and having no clear goals is the fault of the higher ups and their political masters.... the soldiers on the ground are capable and brave, but the rot has set in at the top of the pyramid. half the solution is to get rid of the likes of olmert and barak without those cowardly powermongers the brass would operate better. and without political appointees in the brass it would be the good ol Israeli army of worldwide fame.

The bottom line is that the Likud Government under Ariel Sharon failed to keep an eye on what was happening in the north. Further, the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee under the Likud Chairman, MK Dr. Yuval Steinitz, failed in making sure that the necessary vigilance on Hezbollah was being maintained from 2001 to 2006. The Prime Minister failed by not calling for advice from passed Chiefs of the General Staff and other generals in his Government. Instead he listed to the advice of a union leader turned Minister of Defense. These failings, coupled with the failures of the General Staff cost us the lives of 119 soldiers and 43 civilians and billions of shekels. The Government accepted a sellout cease fire brokered by the USA and the United Kingdom to appease the Arab World and has failed to regain our MIA's, Udi Goldwasser and Eldad Regev. The Government has also failed miserably in demanding that the UN Secretary General order the United Nations troops to see to the disarming of Hezbollah in terms of the cease fire and to prevent Hezbollah from approaching the Lebanon Israel border. The Executive of Kadimah and the Coalition have failed to force Prime Minister Olmert to resign. Israel is supposed to be a democracy and in a democracy a Prime Minister who does not have the support of the electorate must go! This is all known to all of us but what are we the people of this country going to do about it? The answer is simple. "Ihiyeh beseder" or everything will be OK! Apathy rules in Israel and our politicians, left, Right and Center, know it and abuse our trust!
13. “lack of understanding of the strategic goals"
Naftali Lavie ,   Toronto, Canada   (12.31.07)
“failing to accomplish the war's operational goal” This is a load of bunk. Everyone remembers that the loudly stated operational and strategic goal was to "change the rules of the game in Lebanon". i.e. NOT to achieve prisoner exchange, and NOT to stop Katyusha and missile fire. The Israeli militarists lost sight of the human beings involved -- soldiers and civilians, Israelis and Lebanese -- and focused on their wet dreams instead: "changing the rules of the game". Hasn't the time come to "change the rules of the game" IN ISRAEL, and dump the war-mad militarists and politicians?

Sorry but this is a very naive description! You can stop these bunch of thugs (as you called them) guys by simply hitting and hitting hard their masters in their own lands. And believe me, you have all the knowledge and the expertise to beat them as much as needed so that their slaves will have to count to 1 billion before they dare to launch one more rocket! You don't beat the snake everywhere except the right place and then claim that it is not dying!!! You just cut its head. In fact, the last attack against Syria is just an example of how it should have been done!

Wrong information you have .... Bush refused the ceasfire and gave the green light to Israel to go on killing and destroying in Lebanon everything and at least 1000 victims fall in such invasion , Bush had a hope that Israel can get rid of Hizballah to make easyer for the USA but when he found out that Israel can not do the job and the loses in increasing from all sides and the civilians are the most victims and there is no hope to eliminate Hizsallah and the international comunity is calling to stop this massacre then he made this ceasfire theater not for the eyes of the Arabs like you say ..... or you wanted to see more civilian blood sheding on the streets .

Who has asked this Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee to compile this report of Israel’s institutions of all types in connection with the second Lebanese war June 19, 2006?! – Is this a “marathon race” to outdo Winograd Committee’s final report’s publishing. Is this a counter report to the State Comptroller’s findings concerning the Home Front? Q U I B E N E, of this Knesset committee members report declaring their failure to stop government’s action as expected by their committee’s function. Unfortunately this barefaced shameless official document published does not reveal any new cognitions beyond governments and their personal incompetence as commission members, by voting favorably to government’s action who voted for continuous confidence in this government. N o w with this report they add to the national shame, factual danger to the existence of Israel by publicly admitting weakness of Israel’s position in every respect. Nowadays Defense Minister Ehud Barak, a former Chief of Staff, former Minister of Defense, Former Prime Minister now about a year and a half after the war, comes out with “…..The government should also be held responsible for the war and its outcome….." Few days ago he handed over personally to war Chief of Staff Dan Halutz the commemoration war medal also congratulating him. Barak was neither a member of the Lebanese war cabinet nor an elected Knesset member now. Yet he voiced here and there some critics but continues to vote confidence to Olmert’s leadership. - He openly declared / explained his behaviour with not commanding a majority to exchange Olmert as Prime Minister and openly said until that time he will continue this way. A very very personal political view beyond Israel’s public needs! Using the juridical formula of “ accessory to or after the fact” and adopting it to what led to decisions / actions during the 2nd Lebanese War and afterward implicates all members of Olmert’s government as well as all Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee “ of combined responsibility” as accessories as guilty as the heads of government & IDF. - Consequently their names should be made public to indentify those on whom one should not rely in cases of emergency/ political difficult situations. Mr. Olmert, Mr Hanegbi you both head Israel’s most important functions in every thing connected with the 2nd Lebanese war in which you have been testified as having failed.! “This certification” was already in the first, partial Winograd’ Commission report, now also in Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committees’ summary report. Use the opportunity to take “ your co- inhabitants with you and leave the political stage after having caused so much grieve, lose and damage.” - Save yourself at least being voted / kicked out and suddenly now take Israel’s interest to your heart.” - The situation of Israel demands unfortunately such a brutal judgment.
20. Who’s to blame?
Chanan ,   Jerusalem   (12.31.07)
Who really cares who is to blame, lets move on and fix the problem, yes it’s partially the government, but more so the IDF, a good military is run by good soldiers, good strategists, good intelligence and good analysts. What we have are poor soldiers no strategists and analysts that well don’t know how intelligence should be analyzed. So what do we do? First of all the military budget can not be done on a yearly basis, it is short/long term 5 to 7 years. This gives the military the ability to forecast and allows for good fiscal discipline. Secondly, the Gibush, this is a mechanism that needs major overhauling, you first take someone who has done all the basics and only then can he apply to attend a Gibush for a specialized unit, making Rambo out of an 18 year old does not work, well definitely not today. Thirdly, the Segel needs to be made up of competent men and women, don’t promote them just because they are there, you need to have a career mapping agenda, this way you keep and attract only the best. Lastly the nemesis government, don’t place decisions of such importance in the hands of incompetent individuals. We have the ability to be a good army, one of the best, be it guerrilla warfare or any other defensive or offensive situation that requires the military to intervene, so as is said in Hebrew Ze lo be diburim, aleh be ma’asim, its not words that count but deeds.

This is positive. An army that accepts its past mistakes takes a big step in the direction of future success.
