Now he's going to have to face facts... when you give Israel, or any other nation, unconditional support you can't ask for anything in return without being laughed at. American support of Israel must be conditional upon Israeli efforts to make peace, and that specifically includes settlement evacuation. Bush's visit is a waste of time, because he won't apply the obvious leverage he has to achieve his goals... a threat to cut off aid if Israel doesn't comply. He's willing to do it to the Palestinians, if the U.S. were half so honest a peace broker between Arabs and Israelis as we claim to be, we'd be willing to exert our leverage to gain compliance from Israel as well. But Bush is typical of U.S. leadership in his intransigence on this issue. The result is predictable... more cheap rhetoric about peacemaking, more settlements, more aid to Israel and no chance of peace at all. Why fly thousands of miles for this? Does the man enjoy being publicly embarrassed? Or did the current Republican presidential candidates just ask him to leave the country during the primary elections so voters wouldn't get a whiff of his stench?

President Bush (and to a lesser extent S. Of State Rice) are in their last year of power. This is called being a "lame duck" president. He is more worried about his legacy than the peace and security of the State of Israel. Israel would be well advised to ignore the visit (be nice of course!) and concentrate on the future President of the United States. It will be with that future President that Israel will have to get serious with. By the way that is sound advice for Abbas as well.
