Rabbi: Segregate male and female teachers    Kobi Nahshoni
1. OMG! IS ISRAEL GETTING AN ARAB STATE NOW????
I respect rabbis, but I can't support this opinion. it's bad enough that women and men are separated in the busses.and in 2 years boys and girl musn't be in the same room. Rabbi avner: You're not an radical Imam.
noah ,   eilat, israel   (01.08.08)
2. Sounding more and more like Muslims!!
This kind of stand only causes people to disassociate themselves from Judaism. This attitude is so far from normal, it reminds me of Islam! It also says that men are highly-sexed people who can't be trusted around women and women are sirens who can't be trusted. I am really fed up with this!! I am a right-wing Zionist but as far as the religious 'establishment' is concerned, they've lost me!!

6. Total, absolute rubbish - absolutely not required
Aviner's separation mandate wasn't evident at the modern Orthodox grade and high schools in Miami years ago. It's not done in Sephardic institutions in Flatbush even today. It's not done at the modern Orthodox "National Synagogue" in Washington where male and female scholars interact with their co-ed audiences during study sessions. And, thankfully, this isn't done at Yeshiva or Bar Ilan University or it would seriously hinder the academic environment. This gender obsession of the right wing and haredi is very distressing, and only brings Jewish tradition and Orthodoxy into disrepute. Are they in a race to the extremes with their Muslim counterparts?
Raymond from DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (01.08.08)
7. Israel: Banish men now
Take this to its logical conclusion. Banish all men over the age of bar mitzvah from Israel, now. They can send their sperm via post as the need to replace the population arises. Why do we become more and more like the Arabs every day? When is a Dati Leumi leader going to abolish the Chumrut of the month club?
Abe Froman ,   NY, NY   (01.08.08)

9. Building cults
The game is to keep them separate and when they are ready to get married, the Rabbis will give them what normally G-d would. Man's drive for love barred by the Rabbis. The ultimate middleman postion between man and nooky. They have the middle man position on food with Kosher cerificates. Middleman postion on marriages. They even claim to be middleman postion on G-d and Torah (another basic human drive). Middleman position critical speech (lashon hara). Middleman position on jobs, community, charity, education, etc. etc. Holder of the gate key for retuning beni Israel. They even hold the middleman position on catching a glimpse or having sexual thoughts. Hence the no torah envetion of a chet rabbinic law, the machitzah. No wonder they are given status like self proclaimed g-ds. Ring the bell pavlov. If your a really good cultist and study chet Rabbinic additions like a good puppy dog, you will get a better looking wife. If not you get the mutts. In secular society men will work like crazy to become rich so he will be attractive to a beautiful woman. The rabbis set it up so that the work is all for their cult. Purple coolaide anyone. I hear the space ship docking.
Josh   (01.09.08)
10. Rabbinic Orthodoxy is only one form of fundamentalism
This man has revealed the truth: rabbinic Orthodoxy is only one form of religious fundamentalism and source for separation and discrimination in our world. Long live Conservative, Reform and Jewish Renewal!
Avi ,   Tel-Aviv   (01.09.08)
11. I'd like a tax refund, please
I absolutely do not want my hard-earned money going to destructive schmucks like this. That European Jews in the 1930s and 40s indirectly paid Nazi salaries is enough.
Citizen ,   Israel   (01.09.08)
12. Why must WOMEN sit in the back?
Why can't MEN sit in the back? Why can't MEN sit in the back of the bus? Why can't MEN walk behind their women? Would not all the above still maintain separation of genders? Do not be fooled by my pen name. I am a MAN, a Christian man. Where does it say in the Torah or any other holy Jewish writings that women must take the places of dishonor? Jesus taught that it is not wise to take the best seats, the places of honor, etc. He said that if you are invited to a party and sit in the best seat, that you may be humiliated by the Host if he comes over and asks you to take a cheaper seat. But if you assume the cheapest seat is yours, you may be publicly honored when the Host comes and asks you to take a seat of honor. Parking your fat, arrogant butt in the best seats all the time is the opposite of Jesus's advice. And because you disobey... you run the risk of the Lord of Hosts tapping you on the shoulder and asking an embarassing favor of you. I would really hate for God Almighty to say, "(clearing His Imperial throat) Would you mind scooting into the cheap seats?" The Jews are the EXAMPLE people. That's what it means to be the CHOSEN people. It is a blessing AND a curse. It means the eyes of the world are upon you. The world simply refuses to "Honor its Mother". As I recall, THAT is a CHIEF commandment above almost all others. How does looking down on your mother's half of the species honor her? Write me back and tell me, Rabbi. I'll wait.

13. Like a cemetery Fence. Anyone inside want to get out? Anyone
Like a cemetery Fence. Anyone inside want to get out? Anyone outside want to get in? With the Haredi burqa and or wig there is little chance anyone would want to take advantage of Haredi women. As for the non-Haredi women won't listen to this bozo anyway.
Squalid Ibn Harman ,   Qtir   (01.09.08)
14. #8
you agree? well, no wonder your country is in big big trouble, violence and religion reign supreme and it's a chaotic situation. RELIGION MUST STAY SEPARATE FROM STATE AND GOVERNMENT. PERIOD! look at the islamic countries where religion rules everything and everybody and tell me how well they are doing? most are so backwards and progress is zero. is that what you want? to live in the 7th century with rules of the 7th century which are copletely not aplicable to modern times?

15. A woman school teacher I know who teaches in Coalinga, Calif
ornia, will not work for a male principal because she was harrassed with love letters and attempted amorous physical contacts by a male principal who was married when she was single. She reported him and he was fired. But that is not often the outcome. Usually the teacher is fired or transferred. It was only by the Grace of God and her sense not to let the Superintendent keep her evidence to destroy it that protected her. She now works for a female principal. There is a lot of sexual harrassment in workplaces that can be prevented by separating the sexes.
Rivkah   (01.09.08)
16. Modesty and Segregation
Male surgeons for males, female surgeons for females, male nurses for males, femaie nurses for females, male caretakers for males, female caretakers for females, male pharmacists and female pharmacists. Male tellers and female tellers. Male rabbis and female rabbis. This would double the workforce but it would not become cost-effective
Jose' ,   Meah Shearim   (01.09.08)
17. Aveneri has lost it
I am very sad that well-known Israeli rabbis are competing in the New Humra club. Moshe Rabbanu would never recognise many religious rulings being taught today! The pathological fear of women which is being promoted today in certain circles is going to rebound on us and our innocent children.
religious woman ,   Israel   (01.09.08)
18. IF You're Gay, This Is Great!
Yes, increasing numbers of Israel's religious leaders want to pretend they live in Tehran---But what happens to these men when they leave their own surroundings and walk down a street in Tel Aviv? They'll quickly find other men who only want to be with men!
guy ,   los angeles   (01.09.08)
19. It's not "Why do we become more and more like the Arabs"
It's why do we become more and more like non-Jews until the assimilation will swallow up all Judaism.
Dov   (01.09.08)
20. 'We must behave as we teach our children to behave'
Stop teaching our children chet additions that cause them to behave this way and we can behave normally too.

21. yoooo hooo its 2008 not 1008
What a load of old cow droppings its people like this that want to drag us all back to the dark ages. Maybe he would like to send all woman back to the kitchen. Just goes to show how irrelevant religioion is becoming.
Simon ,   TA israel   (01.09.08)
22. Answer for #12 Ima Bleever
It has nothing to do with the men taking the "better" seats. The explanation is that if a man sits in front of a woman, he won't see her unless he makes the effort of turning around (which he'll probably be embarrassed to do out of social pressure). If a man sits behind a woman, he'll automatically see her backside, which might arouse him.
Explainer ,   Israel   (01.09.08)
23. relax everyone
This is a democracy (sort of) where everyone can speak their mind and state their opinions, no matter how unacceptable they are to otheres. Yet everyone talks here as if the man speaks and it becomes so. So, relax, let the man speak - it is his right - but it is not law and does not seem likely to become one. If you disagree, fine - share - but why be such alarmists? Doses of reality would do well to settle a lot of upset stomaches around here....
racheal ,   rehovot, israel   (01.09.08)
24. Rabbi Aviner
Perhaps he'd be better off in one of those Orthodox ghettos in Brooklyn or Monsey where can make all the pronouncements he wants without infringing on the rights of the secular society. He, and others of his ilk, are only causing the majority of Israelis to become even more alienated from religion than they already are.
NYC Girl   (01.09.08)
25. "causes sin and embarrassment"
This rabbi's technique of blaming women for men's weakness is the same technique used to excuse violent and murderous rape.
(01.09.08)
26. what a time waster
Another sicko with more twisted ideas. He says seperation is a torah tradition, but there's little evidence to support that in the PROPER old days (e.g. over 2,000 years ago - search the archeological evidence). In any case it's just one more nutjob that reminds us why there is secular-religious tensions. Note how he made sure to apply this ruling to all of Israel. Then the religious wonder why Israelis are so at odds. Maybe he should stick to his own little group of sheep and stop making foolish rulings for the rest of us. He's more helpful if he gets a job than if he continues with this nonsense. "they should not tell jokes or stories". Absolutely pathetic. What was once a very respected role (Jewish teacher) is now a life that most Jews see as isolated, ignorant and full of fools making foolish rulings about picking noses on Shabbat or not telling jokes to women. It's really quite sad.
Gilad ,   London UK   (01.09.08)
27. I want to know what I get....
I will not speak disrespectfully of anyone's religious leaders, but this Rabbi is definitely not a member of the "Fun at Lunch and Brunch Bunch." How are people supposed to get to know each other, if they can't even eyeball each other?
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (01.09.08)
28. The ultimate expression
I knew a woman who retired from the position of principal of general studies at a bais yaakov yeshiva. At her own honorary dinner, she was not allowed to speak. When a plaque was presented to her, her husband had to stand and speak on her behalf. That's the type of absurdity this man advocates.
Yossi   (01.09.08)
29. sad
What is indeed sad is to see how much secular people have become alienated from anything Jewish, not to speak about common sense. The secular world is full of sexual harassment, divorces, cheating, unhappily married people, etc. I come from a secular family and I am now Dati-Leumi and most of my secular friends, both in Israel and abroad (in Switzerland mostly) are miserable, unmarried, and still living a teenager's life going to nightclubs, even as they are now in their thirties. Whereas most of my religious friends are happy, normal, married with kids, and balanced. It's just a fact and it comes in no small measure form the fact that they have not been exposed to the decadence and sexual perversion and pseudo-"freedom" of the secular world. This is plain reality, for everyone to see. The secular talkbackers should stop a second and think about their own situation, and that of their friends and family, and then think that maybe, maybe, after all, there is some wisdom in the Torah-way of life, as exposed by Rav Aviner Shlit"a.
