31. Danny the egomaniac!!!!
NS ,   Long Island, NY   (01.14.08)
All artists have large egos. That is how they are able to create. Some however allow their egos to control their logic. It is one thing to be pro-peace and anti settlement; it is another thing to accept a passport from an enemy nation (until there is a true peace the PA is an enemy nation). DB has a violent anti-Israel attitude. Last year he attacked a female IDF soldier because she had the nerve to wear her uniform in front of him at a booksigning. Because of protecksia with certain cultural leftist elites he avoided assault and battery charges. Yet his time as a man and Jew of importance is coming to a close. To paraphase a famous movie; his ego is writing checks his body can't cash.

Genuine Tosefta ,   Tveria   (01.14.08)
Anything that Barenboim or this stupid woman advocate will bring about the destruction of Israel and the second Holocaust in Jewish recent memory, much more cruel than even the Nazi perpetrated. They are both wanting to be magnanimous to others while detrimental for their own. This is a sign of a deep flaw of Galut mentality that some Jews are not cured of it and will never be.

The Palestinians have no problem with us as Jews--unless we act like Jews in any way, in which case they hate us. Arab Muslims lovingly embrace Jewish women who convert and marry Muslim men and spineless Jewish men who feel no sense of national loyalty to their own people, but not real Jews. Try telling a loving, Jew-tolerant Palestinian that you believe Jews are a nation deserving of their own homeland, and that the Torah (not Koran) is the truth--see how fast the love dissipates....
35. Beethoven in Mecca and Medina
Jonathan ,   NY USA   (01.14.08)
I'ld like to see Barenboim give a concert in Mecca and Medina, also in Gaza city to all the shieks. I'ld like to see Nasarallah and all the mullahs in Iran and Saudi Arabia. They would eat him alive!
36. This is like being citizen of la-la land!
Palestiniansareamyth ,   USA   (01.14.08)
A Palestinian country, people , culture, language has never existed. This guy is insane for believing Arab propaganda.
37. Palestine "Passport"
Umm Danny   (01.14.08)
First off, aging Barenboim is well past the best part of his career, so he has to drum up attention in other ways. Any activity in Ramallah will always get him borrowed headlines. Second, a man who could marry a non-Jewish fellow musician when there are always so many talented Jewish women available is sending a message which we should notice. (He trained in Israel too!) If he is proud to receive the pretend passport to a ficticious country which is in real life a terrorist-supporting community, we can conclude that he may know something about music, but is seriously lacking in common sense.
38. barenboim

boycott all of his concerts - jews around the world too!
39. No comments from Joseph P ?
Hiram ,   Paris   (01.14.08)
Barenboim like anyone else is entitlted to decide what he want to do with his name. It bis interesting nto see that the Israeli civil servants have not cancelled his Israeli citizenship ! It is even more interesting to look closely ( More closely than Ynet posters do ) at musical initiatives being taken a few kilometeres of Israel by men of goodwill who believe that music played together ( Arab and Jews )c can bring peace a chance .
40. Barenboim should know that Palestine

He is a lunatic, and this makes him famous. If I behaved like that I'd be put in a nut-house.

44. Barenboim
David ,   New York   (01.15.08)
Barenboim is one of the few clear-minded Jews on the Israeli-Palestinian situation. How can a people be shoved into ghettos for two thousand years, only to shove another people into ghettos the moment they obtain a nation?
45. he should go play in gaza, & see how great the passport is
(01.15.08)
I wonder if he would ever make it back alive
46. Well said Dan! No. 18
Marlene N. ,   New York City   (01.15.08)
This should put Israel to shame because what it accuses the Palestinians of is exactly what Israel is guilty of. And obviously, there was no racist criteria involved to determine citizenship for Barenboim as Israel uses to grant someone the "right of return." When I read comments such as yours, it makes up for all the other hateful comments posted here.
47. Good move Barenboim I am with you.
Yaakov Sullivan ,   NYC   (01.15.08)
t would be absolutely horrible if now, with good intentions, expectations are raised which will not be able to be fulfilled," Barenboim said. "Then we will sink into an even greater depression." Unfortunately Barenboim is against gay marriges and multiple partners, otherwice I agree with him. Palestinian authority made a great progress on gay marriges and abortion rights. As a gay activist I support Barenboim. Hopefully many Iaraelis will follow and request Muslim passports.
48. #46 - Marlene, have you ever bothered...
Joe ,   Los Angeles, CA   (01.15.08)
Marlene, have you ever bothered to research the criteria for Palestinian citizenship? You might just be surprised as to how "racist" it is in comparison with the Israeli Law of Return. Anybody can convert to Judaism and get Israeli citizenship: ANYBODY. You can do it, Abu Mazen can do it, Ahmadinejad can do it, ANYBODY CAN DO IT. As regards getting Palestinian citizenship, the PA must have made an exception in Barenboim's case, because, post-Oslo, the criteria for acquiring Palestinian citizenship require either: being born to a Palestinian father or being born to a Palestinian mother if the father is unknown. Palestinian citizenship is racist in nature and Palestinian nationalism is racist and apartheidist in nature. Daniel Barenboim's getting a passport and citizenship are nothing more than a publicity stunt, as they are a perfect example of how the PA violates its own laws. Research the issue and you might be surprised how the opposite of what you say is true. Then again, I wouldn't expect you to have that kind of intellectual honesty...
49. 48-Look who's talking of Intellectual honesty
Marlene N. ,   New York City   (01.15.08)
Anyone who had "intellectual" honesty would not be bragging about what the requirements are for citizenship tto Israel. Those requirements fall along the lines of having a Jewish mother, or how many Jewish grandparents you had. If I lived in Germany during the 1930's, I would have been deprived of German citizenship based exactly on that racist criteria. Instead Israel uses it. and deprives others who in fact do come from the land their just right of return. Is there something to brag about when a Peruvian Indian can convert to Judiaism and then miraculously have this so called right and be treated as a first-class citizen in place of others who cannot meet this kind of racist criteria? If you have the legal requirements of citizenship to Palestine, then please post it here because obviously, it was not based on someone having to have a Christian /Muslim mother or father, or grandparents.

"You have more anti Israeli leftists in your country , than the whole Tel Aviv population." I seriously doubt that. Most anti-Israel literature is written by Israelis.

54. #49 - Marlene, you asked for it...
Joe ,   Los Angeles, CA   (01.15.08)
"The Palestinian National Authority drafted a piece of legislation in 1995 outlining its Citizenship Law. Article 7 of this legislation defines a Palestinian as anyone who “(1) was a holder of Palestinian citizenship (other than Jews) before 15 May 1948; (2) was born to a Palestinian father; (3) was born in Palestine to a Palestinian mother even if the citizenship of the father is not known; (4) was born in Palestine to unknown parents; and (5) was born outside of Palestine to a Palestinian mother and to a father whose nationality was not known – provided that this person opts for Palestinian citizenship within one year after reaching maturity, that he notifies the minister of interior of his intention to become a Palestinian citizen, that he becomes habitually a resident of Palestine, and that the minister does not object to this applicant within one year from the time he receives the notice from the applicant." Notice how Jews are EXCLUDED from this document. Also take note of the fact that NOBODY CAN CONVERT TO "PALESTINIANISM". Also take note of the purely "jus sanguinis" nature of Palestinian citizenship, except in the case of a person born in "Palestine" to unknown parents. Again, Marlene, please stop with the false analogies between Israel and Nazi Germany. Israel isn't deporting people to crematoria. No German Jew ever walked into a German Imbiss and blew himself up. Any Palestinian can convert to Judaism and qualify for citizenship under the Law of Return. Also, any Palestinian can get Israeli citizenship via naturalization. THIS IS NOT RACISM. Also, the requirements for naturalization in Israel are even more relaxed than in the US, with only three years of residency required. I hope this puts an end to your false analogies and false accusations, Marlene...
55. Just making it up there Joe?
John S. ,   Denver, USA   (01.15.08)
LOL, no one is stupid enough to believe you false presentation of Palestinian law. Palestinian Jews (that is, the native Palestinian Mizrahim) have ALWAYS been considered Palestinian and part of the Palestinian nation, as is firmly and clearly stated in the famous "PLO Charter" and all PLO/PA documentation since. You post is a lie and I dare you to cite your source, as assuming you didn't just make it up you're clearly copying it from someone who did. Anyway, as a Jewish-American, I'd love the honor of becoming a Palestinian citizen. I think it is great.
56. Show me law..not "draft" of legislation
Marlene N. ,   New York City   (01.15.08)
This was a draft of legislation written in 1995, and obviously, Mr. Barenboim would not be given Palestinian citizenship based on that if it were law. So you have not given me anything. True that no one can conver to Palestiniasm but why should they? In most countries you cannot convert your nationality anyway because citizzenship is not based on religious affiliation, but in Israel it very specifically is. There is no false analogy to Germany. Do you think that Jews were suddenly carted overnight to concentration camps. Nazism started out with racism that kept escalating. What do you think you have in Israel. It is no different when everything is based on your identity. Imagine to have to be forced to be a certain religion in order to have a right to go back to your country! And people like you support this. This would be tantamount to someone who was Jewish to have to give up his religious affiliation in order to have rights. If that were the case, you can just image how the entire world be hearing about that. I do not support vile racism..regardless of where it emanates.

58. Barenbaum and Wagner
Jacqueline Miller ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (01.15.08)
If I remember correctly, Mr Barenbaum requested permission to play Wagner, permission was denied and he played it anyway, as if he were a law unto himself. He failed to take into account other peoples' sensitivities.
59. #55 & 56 - The draft is as good as it gets because...
Joe ,   Los Angeles, CA   (01.16.08)
Palestinians have no citizenship laws because Palestine is a non-country: http://www.carnegieendowment.org/events/index.cfm?fa=eventDetail&id=504 Because of this, this draft of legislation is the closest thing it gets to binding law, because the Palestinian Basic Law, while stating, "Palestinian citizenship shall be regulated by law " [Article 7], has yet to bring the aforementioned draft into law. For all intensive purposes, the draft is the law. Going back to the idea that Palestinian citizenship is a non-citizenship, however, to quote TH Marshall: "Citizenship requires the institutionalization of social and political rights within the framework of a given state, which the Palestinians do not have." Palestinian citizenship is therefore a non-citizenship. Going back to the story of Barenboim, he was given an "honorary" citizenship. Ynet fails to mention this, but it is a sharp distinction from acquiring Palestinian citizenship via the same channels Arabs have to go through. John, as regards the text of the law, here is my source: "Citizenship and the State in the Middle East", p. 219. This stuff is too outlandish, racist, and apartheidist for me to make up... As regards living in a country with a gaping hole in their constitution that could turn the country into a Sharia state, no thank you. My parents were ethnically cleansed from Aleppo, Syria in the 40's, a city with a continuous Jewish presence since the time of King David. I grew up with the horror stories of being Ahl al-Dhimmi, but, if that's what suits you, go right ahead... Marlene, ANYBODY, REGARDLESS OF RELIGION, CAN BE NATURALIZED AS AN ISRAELI CITIZEN. CITIZENSHIP IS NOT BASED ON RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION. What part of this don't you understand? Denying this is like denying the fact that the world is round! As regards comparisons to Nazi Germany, again, you were wrong. The overt goal of the Nazis from Hitler's rise to power was the annihilation of the Jewish people, and while it was implemented in stages, it most certainly was not "racism that kept escalating". As regards this statement, "[t]his would be tantamount to someone who was Jewish to have to give up his religious affiliation in order to have rights," THIS WAS THE STORY OF MY FAMILY'S LIFE FOR 1600 YEARS. As Ahl al-Dhimmi, we were denied property rights, we were denied the ability to work in the occupation of our choice, we weren't allowed to give testimony in court, and we had to pay a special tax called the Jizya (sometimes up to 50% of our gross income) for the "right" to practice our religion. WHERE WAS THE WORLD THEN? WHERE WAS THE UN WHEN 1 MILLION JEWS WERE ETHNICALLY CLEANSED FROM MUSLIM COUNTRIES? WHY ARE THE ONLY REFUGEES THAT MATTER ARAB REFUGEES? Marlene, in supporting the Palestinian cause, you support vile racism. The facts are staring you in the face. You can continue to deny them like a crazy person denies that the world is round, but, in the end, the joke will be on you...
