1. Why Not Buy the Marine Aircraft Instead
Dave Levy ,   Burbank. CAUSA   (02.18.08)
My concern is obvious, will this be an easy and prime target for Syrian or other country's missiles? Would for instance, a few well aimed Palis rockets, sufficiently damage the runway to put it out of order, termporarily at least? Why is Israel concentrating so much in really what amounts to a small area..why not spread her IAF around...the country? Is a 2.5m runway really all that necessary. Perhaps Israel should consider the marine type aircraft that can be both a plane and a helicopter? Food for thought.
2. Exposing Israel
Brod ,   USA   (02.18.08)
This kind of report is not good and necessary. It is exposing Israel to the enemy.
3. V22 Osprey, crap aircraft.
Too-na Al Baqqor ,   israel   (02.18.08)
Yeah it's interesting, but it has too high an accident rate this early in it's career. It won't be around too long. The Marines don't like it either.
4. A good asset for C5 Galaxy
Hiram ,   Paris   (02.18.08)
Such a runway is definately a very good asset for fully loaded C5 Galaxy planes operated by the USAF. Since Israel does not operate cargo planes ( in the sense of 2008 air technology that is ) this clearly means that this strip will be used for " heavy transports" inbound Israel, not limited to US Planes of course ( other countries besides the USA manufacture military equipment ...) Amongst advantages will be added " discretion" as to what will be offloaded there. Let's simply hope that we will not need to use it too often .....
5. Treason? Yeah. I think so.
Gideon Reader ,   USA   (02.18.08)
I am stunned that the GPS coordinates were NOT printed in order that Israel's enemies could pre-register their aeras of fire and points of impact. The media is falling down on the job of enabling the hostile neighbors get the biggest band for the bomb. Not so many years ago this would be the subject of a drum head courts martial and a firing squad.
6. Somebody needs a few facts
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (02.18.08)
'For those still unimpressed, the amount of rocks used in the construction of this new IAF base is roughly equal to that needed to pave 2.5 soccer fields!' Guess what that is equal to a road less than a kilometer in length. Try a figure closer to 2,500 soccer fields.
7. #3 Agreed - Osprey is a white elephant
RA   (02.18.08)
High maintenance cost, unreliable, accident prone. Let the Marines use it for a few more years and iron out the kinks, maybe then Israel can buy it.
8. SECRET NEW US BASE IN ISRAEL?
Arik Silverman ,   Milwaukee USA   (02.18.08)
Does Israel really need this unless it has plans for military action in distant countries? One can't help wondering whether it's being prepared for the United States, which will need a new base when the Arabs eventually throw it out.
9. i love Yisrael
Gideon   (02.18.08)
and the arabs too.
10. 2.5 miles landing strip? for an.......
Nora ,   Tel Aviv   (02.18.08)
Israeli Cape Canaveral of the future?
11. Osprey
Alan ,   Tel Aviv   (02.18.08)
Ya can't fit merkava tanks in an Osprey, nor will it hold 100,000 liters of fuel. They want to clear up the skies over Ben Gurion Airport. My guess is an eye towards future space projects or very large unmanned aircraft.
