31. Thank you
Donna Diorio ,   Dallas Texas USA   (03.26.08)
Thank you, Yaron London. Messianic Jews are human beings, too. Thank you for placing the blame with those who would persecute and attempt to murder a family like this who are well thought of far and wide.
32. i'm not secular like my parents were
yahn goodey   (03.26.08)
yet i do worship Hashem but i believe that many teachings of the rabbis are in error---so i don't follow them---i believe that the karaites are correct and i also believe that the 1 the world calls jesus is the Messiah even though it is impossible that this would be His jewish name and it is very evident that those that claim to be christians do not do what Messiah taught.i usually keep my religious beliefs to myself but seeing this artical i have to wonder---am i your enemy just because i dont follow rabbinic authority?am i not allowed to use the brain G-D gave me to think with for myself?
33. To #32 Guess what, you created your own religion

34. Messianic Quandry
Rodney Dezarn ,   Fayetteville, USA   (03.26.08)
The Messianic community lives in a violent environment where even Jews express hatred toward fellow Jews. Jewish identity is not based on outward observances of the law and rabbinical traditions, it is measured by the heart and in ministering to those in need. The belief by some that even to join the I.D.F. or experience combat against enemies is against their religous principals is appalling. It is the Messianic that is moved with compassion and love for their fellow Jew yet also challenge those who claim to be most learned to examine the sciptures. Hatred is not an attribute of G-d and does also violate the law, for it is the same as murder being committed against your brother within your heart. The character of G-d is well documented, justice, mercy, unconditional love, and forgiveness are chief among them. The orthodox, reform or any other have no monopoly on G-d he is for all, and his greatest gift is easily found for those who seek him.
35. #32 Karites do not believe in anything other than the 5Books
(03.27.08)
They do not believe in the Prophets or in the Temple or especially in what you call the "Messiah" who has a function if you only believe through our Sages. By making your own religion, you are not Jewish, a heretic in the grossest of ways.
36. London: Not journalist, not investigator
Ilan ,   Ariel   (03.27.08)
At this time it is unclear who did this, and if the person did so for religious reasons. It could have been a Palestinian or it could have been a Jew the facts have yet to be determined. London is not an investigator and the basis for what he says is his own speculation. Making things up might be acceptable journalism in Israel, but .... Still not the truth,.
37. Time to Reflect
Jennifer Dewar ,   Cookeville, TN   (03.27.08)
My soul is offended and my heart is breaking over this horrid incident. What manner of madness can enter the mind of a man who tells himself he knows God! (I am a woman of faith, so I am certainly not calling all believers in God madmen.) All of me is in pain over this, for I am of Jewish heritage and believe that Jesus is the Messiah: as a Jew, I am deeply ashamed, and as a Christian, I am deeply wounded. One would think that after suffering acts of hatred for millenia, even to this very day, that such an act would be unthinkable for a Jew. As a matter of fact, it is unthinkable for any person of true faith. "If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?" (I John 4:20) May the LORD open all of our eyes and all of our hearts to the Truth. Lord, have mercy on us all, and do what You do best: the impossible...and bring some good out of this and heal all Israel from within. Amen.

party time ,   israel   (03.27.08)
They'll have a go at you too at the entrance to the IC ward, while loudly setting up their tv cameras etc, and excitedly calling evangelist stations...and all the while fressing non stop. Oops, sorry they almost forgot that they're supposed to be visiting a patient. I find their reaction to the unfortunate occurrence quite sick and sickening. The smell and sight of the masses of food there is disgusting. But that's exactly what these weirdos are.

43. #35 - Do your research before writing about Karaites
Eli ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (03.27.08)
Please don't be a complete ignoramus and spread false information about the Karaites. We believe in the whole Tanach not "just" the 5 Books of Moses. If you want more info on us, go here (for example): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karaite_Judaism
44. sick, disgusting terrorism for which THERE IS NO EXCUSE...
Rick ,   Sharon, CT   (03.27.08)
save your breath: THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THE TERRORIST ATTACK ON THIS POOR BOY. HKBH SHOULD GIVE THIS BOY A REFUAH SHLAIMA. and, the criminal swine who committed this outrage should spend his life behind bars. THERE IS NO EXCUSE.
45. As they offer London the only type of
israel ,   israel   (03.27.08)
'Judaism' ( ha ha) that speaks to him personally, he's really excited and excitable, and that's always fun to watch. In print, you miss the ludicrous stage management of the writer and also of the subject matter in this case.

marilyn ,   USA   (03.27.08)
Right now he's in a medically induced coma, has a large infection risk, has schrapnel in one lung, and has had surgeries so the doctors may not want him to have very many visitors. Also when people bring food to a family (the parents probably can't leave the hospital) it's their way of saying that they care.
47. Thank you, Yaron London
Chen ,   Israel   (03.27.08)
Any attempt to murderously target the Messianic Jewish community in Israel must be condemned. We expect this when anti-Semitic attacks take place around the world and condemn governments that remain silent. Where are voices of Israel's leaders? Are they afraid to take a stand for this group of its citizens? The test of a democracy is if and how its minorities asre defended and protected. Let's hear some official voices. And let's pray that there won't be any obstruction of justice in finding and prosecuting the perpetrator(Ss) of this heinous crime.
48. your child is being chased by a knife wielding..
Yisrael ,   P"T   (03.27.08)
murderer. Do you Mr London intellectually debate with the would be murderer the pros and cons of his desire to kill your child - or do you ACT? Drug pushers infest your neighbourhood, do you talk with them about alternative careers or do you and other caring parents CHASE them out of town before your kids become heroine addicts? Physical danger to your children should cause YOU to act to save your children - using only violence where an intellectual approach will not work. Some Jews see that life has an important spiritual component that needs protecting as much as the body (or more). You and them (the religious types) would defend your loved ones from those that would attempt to kill them. Jews for CHristianity don't become christians for intellectual reasons. They are emotionally driven and as such are impervious to intellectual honesty. You can only be intellectual with a cold intellectual. Do not expect the average Jew to "intellectualize" with any enemy that wants to destroy our children either physically OR spiritually. We are not afraid of debate (as you have suggested) with any intellectually honest individual. On the contrary, the greatness and strength of Torah is the ability to discern the difference between the time for intellectual debate and a time for action against an "emotionally driven" enemy. The great intellect that you are must realize that you and I have equal rights to defend our life against attempted murder - if you choose to limit your definition of life to "the guf" that is great for you, but expect many good Jews to defend "the guf and the neshama" equally - intellectually or physically according to the situation.

Were you there the first day when Ami's life was in danger and his family was in shock? Friends arrived and quietly supported the family. Were you there when well-wishers from around the country arrived, both those who share the family's beliefs and those who don't but whose hearts were touched by this pre-meditated attempt to muder the Ortiz family? Many religious friends, neighbors, and army comrades have come to the hospital to show their concern and support. Were you there when Ami's sedatives began to wear off and his parents endured the sight of their son suffering in pain? Were you there to see their pain and tearsand the quiet personal prayers offered from broken hearts for Ami's healing? Can you join in wishing this boy refuah shlemah? And yes, thankfully, people are bringing food and drinks to sustain the family members who remain at the hospital around the clock . Shame on you for your bias and nasty twisting of the poignant scene at the hospital. That is, unfortunately, what is truly disgusting.
50. No one takes food to the hospital here
israel ,   israel   (03.27.08)
We all buy at the cafeteria and the shop to support the children's fund. Ezer Mitzion provides the rest in their amazing manner. Masses of quiches, pickled cucumbers and every kind of cake and soft drinks, is in grossly bad taste. Extremely bad taste given the framework described about this poor child's condition.

Israel   (03.27.08)
Watch out for religious ideologues! This response justifies murder and promotes it if there is a perceived threat to the Jewish soul. This is dangerous thinking! It leads to dangerous actions! Don't forget, muder of the body is still a crime according to state law and the Torah. There is no justifiable rationale for this horrible crime! Police, take note!
52. #50 Ridiculous!
(03.27.08)
People always bring food to hospitals n Israel. That's a known fact so don't try to cast unfounded, negative portrayals upon what is going on at the hospital. And "masses of quiches"? Really? Oy vey! Your post is in "extremely poor taste". How about expressing some sympathy and empathy for Ami and his family? How about condemning the murderous crime? How about some prayers for mercy and justice? Instead you want to tell everyone how much holier you are by eating "better". So absurd!
53. #51, I agree with you.
Yisrael ,   P"T   (03.27.08)
I understand why everyone will defend their bodies against attack. I also understand how some religious parents may defend their body and soul vigorously - though not to include murder for religious beliefs under any circumstance. I also understand the importance of not allowing individuals to defend their perceived rights by killing others. Rather every complaint, except physical self defense, must be processed through the courts to establish guilt and punishment according to the law. To allow such personal action would be wrong, against Torah and create anarchy. I understand many positions without necessarily agreeing with any of them - entirely. However, in Israel we have an inability to define an enemy as an enemy - even when that enemy has openly declared to the world that they want to kill us physically or spiritually. The church announced it's plans to missionize the Jews after 1967 and the arabs have not stopped announcing their intention to kill us at the earliest opportunity. My point is really that we must openly treat those that call for our deaths as enemies. In the case of christians they must be deported if they try to missionize Jews (according to the law) and in the case of arabs we have to eliminate those who PUBLICALLY DECLARE or ACT on their intention to eliminate us. And this must not be accomplished by individuals, but by the government of Israel, the IDF and the police. Individuals take up grievances in the courts. The government must protect us from those that we collectively define as enemies according to law and the necesseties of war. But we must define what and who is our enemy and vote for a government that acts on this definition forcefully - to remove threats to our lives wherever they exist. It bothers me that we pander to those that want to destroy us.
54. fressing non stop is an insult to the injured child

and all those others with children in IC who are waiting outside too
55. Good article, Yaron! but...
Boker ,   Israel   (03.30.08)
the hateful, uninformed, fear mongering and intolerant religeous extreminsts on talkback do worry me about the future of Israel. These are not the attributes of G-d and therefore not the attributes of godly men, regardless of how "religious" they may be. Love G-d, love man. That's the Torah.
56. #15 thank you
Connie ,   USA   (03.31.08)
Your remarks are spot on. How can those who have suffered so much validate this hate and violence? Will mankind never learn from history?

58. #19 - a question for you
jack bauer   (04.01.08)
was Jesus a jew? did he practice Judaism? was he not considered a rabbi? what did he tell his followers to do that is contrary to Judaism? there is no reason to be hostile to any missionary. If someone came to you and asked if you would like to discuss religion.....and you are already sure in you belief (which is contrary to theirs) then you simply tell them you are not interested and ask them not to bother you anymore. Simple really. Now on the other hand, when the "religion of peace" shows up, it is usually wise to hide in your bunker with loaded weapons. They may want to look behind the rocks and trees, you know, the ones calling out....... leave any story to ynet, and you will end up blaming some haredim
59. london = an intellectual miget (sorry, I mean little person)

60. Reply to article re Ami Ortiz
Anne Wythington ,   Dallas Texas USA   (04.01.08)
I find this article to be very convoluted in it's argument that the Ortiz family/ messianic people are asking to be victimized. The appalling lack of concern for human life indicates a disregard for the commandment to 'love your neighbor as yourself.' This reporter and even YNET should be more concerned with offering the news than they are with indoctrinating the public. I'm shocked. Anne Wythington
