1. Spending
Bret ,   Tel-Aviv, Israel   (04.10.08)
The modern state of Israel becomes 60 years old soon; congratulations, it deserves to be a miraculous and applauded event (it has taken almost 2,000 years to achieve, much too long) . However, it is disturbing how much money is being spent on the celebration when the funds could be used to benefit impoverished Israelis. The government (or planning committee) would make an amazing statement (and show they truly care about their constituents) if they held a modest anniversary party and spent the money to improve social welfare projects in Israel. In Israel, survivors of the Holocaust and other elderly are amongst the most poor and ill, they also live in substandard, dirty conditions (ironic eh?) The quality and comprehensiveness of the public education system in Israel needs to be improved and help at risk students (mostly Mizrachim, Ethiopian and Muslim high school students). It would not hurt if elementary and high school teachers were paid a higher salary as well. The public transportation system in Israel is in need of improvement. Current busses should be replaced with natural gas/low emission vehicles or electric run cars (like in San Francisco). These are just suggestions, but then again, what the hell do I know ;) If there isn't enough money to fund these programs from the spending budget, consider the money wasted on the settlers (~7 billion a year). This money is NOT military spending or money used to secure the West Bank or protect Israelis from terrorists, it is money diverted from the general population to fund settlers new roads, electricity lines, houses, etc... and THEN you need MORE security to protect those in the settlements...It would be more cost efficient just to have bases and remove the settlers; save a lot of money.
2. i wish i could be there for the march to sderot..

3. March for the Jew
Ilan ,   The Netherlands   (04.11.08)
Yes, you read that well. I would like to see less activity for Israel who has a big army, airforce and what ever to take care of herself ... get active for Jews and Jewish life in Europe. We want to shop for kosher foods, etc.. we are not interested in Judiaca or over priced garbage from Israel if it can not be eaten or enhance our lives here. Oh and don't bother telling us to come to Israel. Thats a no-go. We are staying here and could do with some activity about Jewish life.
4. We have to learn to celebrate our successes not just whinge!

5. We are so lucky to be living in a country
5th generation ,   Israel   (04.12.08)
where this is an issue - where the funds exist, but it is full of people who still know where the real priorities in life should be, and are willing to do something about it.
6. Too much money spent on Party
Millicent ,   Israel   (04.13.08)
It is crazy to spend millions on a 60th Anniversary party for Israel, when the monies could be better used elsewhere. The money is badly needed in the educational system for funding remedial and gifted classes, and towards other improvements for students and teachers. Money is also needed for the poor and elderly to help them to purchase food, medicine etc. Money is also needed to fund the return of the GAS MASKS to all citizens since the Gov claims it doesn't have the funds for that! SO INSTEAD OF BLOWING THE MONEY ON A PARTY LIKE IRRESPONSIBLE CHILDREN JUST SAY NO AND SPEND THE MONEY IMPROVING THE LIVES OF ALL ISRAELI CITIZENS BY INVESTING IT IN EDUCATION! wE ALL KNOW THAT MOST OF THE MONEY FOR THE PARTY WILL SOMEHOW END UP IN THE POCKETS OF THE RICH AND OLMERT'S CRONIES AS WELL!
7. jews and arabs can mourn the nakba together instead
zionist forever   (04.13.08)
Only in Israel can celebration of 60 years of indipendence become a political issue where we are having marches in the street to stop it. the 60th aniversry seems to have become a day for jews to mourn the creation of Israel. Lets just spend some money on Nakba Day. The arabs see Israels creation to be a catastrophe so they have their marches now the jews seem to be looking at Israels creation as a catastrophie and not something to be celebrated so lets just have Nakba Day celebrations mark 60 years of nakba then everybody in Israel jew and arab will feel that they have something to take part in together. When will these fools get it into their head the national budget does not exist to serve their cause alone everybody is entitled to their share of the pie and that includes celebrations. Say we wont spend the money obn celebrations then we will have the poor saying it sholuld go to them because they dont have enough, the millitary will say give it to use because we are short, the religious right will say give it to us because we need to built more yeshivas, the enviromental people will be saying give it to us because we dont have enough. Everybody thinks that they dont have enough and so we should not spend money on celebrations but to their cause instead. This spending is not just going to be a party but it will be an investment. There are alot of jews and non jews alike who are going to be visiting Israel get their chance to join in the party, that means money for the likes of ELAL, it means that the tourist stores can make money selling memorabilia to the tourists. It means jobs and new money coming into the country which helps the economy. If all we are not going to be making the atmosphere a party one then you just wont get all that investment which the government through taxes can then recycle and divide between all the groups wanting more money spent on them.
8. To #5 who writes that "the funds exist".....
Maxine ,   Ashkelon   (04.14.08)
You wirte that "we are so lucky to live in a country where the funds exist" but that's the problem: they don't exist!!!! If there were such funds, we would not see people scrambling for food handouts each week, schools in dire need of being improved and new ones being built, our Holocaust survivors living in poverty...I could go on and on. These funds should exist for a less extravagant celebration and the rest used to help our citizens in every aspect of improving their lives. Now wouldn't that be something to celebrate?
9. 60th celebration
sas ,   israel   (04.14.08)
every agorot is a waste. and especially abroad in the embassies. we have a lot to do with the money that is wasted on such events.
10. CELEBRATE LIFE AND 60 YEARS OF ISRAELS
petra ,   USA   (04.15.08)
REBIRTH. POVERTY IS ALWAYS WITH US AS ANYWHERE ELSE ON EARTH. JUST SURVIVING FOR 60 YEARS IS A GOOD REASON TO CELEBRATE. SHOULD ISRAEL COWER IN A CORNER BECAUSE SHE'S ANOTHER DEMOCRACY WITH REAL HUMANITARIAN NEEDS? NO, SHE TELLS THE WORLD, 'WE'RE HERE WE'RE PROUD, WE'RE HERE AND WE'RE HAPPY. BETTER THAN CELEBRATING 6,000,000 DEAD JEWS. G-D BLESS AND KEEP HIS BELOVED ISRAEL.
11. celebration
zichron   (04.15.08)
the 1937 partition plans gave the arabs a chance to get a good share of palestine they fought the partitions cruelly and with criminal greed . really israel should celebrate the defeat of nazism because this allowed israel to be created .may 1945 the creation of israel started .
