Thousand Island dressing stirs Muslim row    Roee Nahmias
1. How sad for Muslims. Alcohol is so medicinal and
bacteriocidal in moderation. Even King Solomon said to "drink a LITTLE wine for your stomach's sake and your often infirmities."
Rivkah   (04.13.08)
2. Don't tell US military retirees the Muslims want to take
away alcohol in their hoped for conquest of the world. That would start World War III for sure. There are some things veterans will fight for and access to alcohol is one of them. That's a secret, so when the retired Admirals on Coronado Island near San Diego are checked into the hospital there for alcoholism, the diagnosis on the chart is UCD or "Usual Coronado Disease."
Rivkah   (04.13.08)
3. If the Muslims want a really healthy salad dressing with no
alcohol with a taste that sort of grows on you until you notice you prefer it, try Bragg All Natural Ginger and Sesame Salad Dressing with organic olive oil and aminotacids. Just shake and pour. It does not need to be refrigerated. It even has apple cider vinegar, raq honey, garlic, ginger, lemon juice and sesame seeds. Forget the Thousand Island.
Rivkah   (04.13.08)
4. It's undoubtably a Zionist plot.
You know, those sneaky Zionists are everywhere, plotting. I would suggest adding a small amount of alcohol to all food products - I would have suggested pork but .....
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (04.13.08)
5. Remind me of a protected plant used to manufacture condoms.
True story. In US they used to include some fibers from an Alabama plant by the name of Amphianthus pusillus Torr. Once the enviroment al activists discoverd that the`plant was protected, they staged a big demonstration in front of PGR Alabama Plant. Thanks God now they use a rubber substitude, but is was in the news in the nineties..
Yaakov Sullivan ,   NYC   (04.13.08)
6.  story is unecessary provocation
Jewish dietary laws are just as stringent. Muslims are certainly allowed to adhere to their own dietary beliefs and should not be chided for that. This story is fodder.
Steve   (04.13.08)
7. The company better not change the recipe!!
Chaya ,   Bat Yam, Israel   (04.13.08)
8. 2 spoons of 1000 island and im anyones
now whos for some salad ?
Simon ,   TA Israel   (04.13.08)
9. Why don't Muslims have certification?
They should start a certification process like Jews have; that way they know that whatever they eat is permissable. No-one should rely on assumptions?
Shalom   (04.13.08)
10. They shouldn't buy ANY Israeli products
Where there is an alternative Muslims should buy Chinese, buy Egyptian, buy Lebanese, buy Syrian, buy British. Please don't buy Israeli, don't buy American.
Chanalau, Tova ,   London, UK   (04.13.08)
11. HAHAHA dumb muzzies....I'll be having 1000island on my salad
tonight   (04.13.08)
12. If someone wrote this way about kashrut I would be offended
Making fun of Moslem dietary laws is petty bigotry.
Ilan ,   Ariel   (04.13.08)
13. Thousand Island/alcohol
We love Thousand Island. We just ran out of it so we bought a new bottle. I had a passing thought that it might be healthier to make my own. Ahh, the easy life. That was three days ago. Today I see this article. Now my family has never gotten drunk-and certainly not on thous. island. But what if this is just a cover for a plot to poison bottles of thousand island and remove the chance that Moslems will be poisoned?! It is not so far fetched. Look at what almost happened in the restaurant at the Bourse in Ramat Gan! I hope the authorities are as "paranoid" as I and are on the watch-out!
Me ,   Israel,Israel   (04.13.08)
14. And why do WE care about it????
If they don't like it, they need to leave this country. They are NOT equal citizens here.
Antonio ,   Haifa   (04.13.08)
15. oh take easy and enjoy from your life
oh take easy and enjoy from your life because thousand island or some alcohol will never make any problem in your life believe me
sam ,   tehran,sam   (04.13.08)
16. # 10 Tova
Was wondering when you would come out from under your rock, Tova. Actually Kol Hakavod to our Arab cousins, the idea about a certification is not a bad one if that is OK with them. If that is part of their beliefs then it is fine.
Voice of Reason ,   Here & Now   (04.13.08)
17. 1000 Island
Exactly. All religions should be free to practice as they wish. All countries should allow all religions to practice as they wish as long as they do not infringe on the rights of others.
Voice of Reason ,   Here & Now   (04.13.08)
18. I'm looking for the recipe with alc.
but I only find the following Mayo,Katsup Relish and a dash of mustard.. no where do I find the word alcohol.. and would be hard pressed to see any reason to use it in this simple dressing which I've grown up with .... unless they plan on getting us all hooked on it ;-) mmmmmmmmmm main lining blue cheese dressing....
Robert Goldman ,   cooper city Florida   (04.13.08)
19. #10, thank you
I agree with you. They should accept nothing from the State of Israel - medical care, education, national insurance stipends, jobs. In fact, they shouldn't be residing in Israel at all.
israeli ,   israel   (04.13.08)
20. article & some TBs r ethnically offensive...
why is this article written in such an insensitive manner? why does Ynet pint such offensive TalkBacks? If this was about our Kashrut many people would be highly upset? More sensitivity would be nice
Sally Forth ,   Jerusalem of course!   (04.13.08)
21. As a Palestinian living in the USA
I always search for OU certification when I buy my products... OU is the Orthodox Union certification which I trust particularly to make sure that certain products are Pork free. I always look for Kosher Gelatin, etc... OU is doing a good job in that perspective... Kol HaKavod for them :)
Musa ,   USA   (04.13.08)
22. Re: # 20
But it isn't about our kashrut, Sally Forth!
Andras Bereny ,   Kfar Tapuah, Ephraim   (04.13.08)

25. #9 Shalom - They do. It is called Halal
I have products that carry both the Kasher and Halal markings
Squalid Ibn Harman ,   Qtir   (04.13.08)
26. Alcohol is a Muslim invention
Alcohol is actually an Arabic word and it was invented by Muslims. If you drink without knowing you don’t carry any sins.
Egyptian   (04.14.08)
27. to Rivkah
The Muslims cannot drink Alcohol. If King Salomon said it, it applies on you and not on us muslims. Otherwise, why don't you follow the Great Azhar scholar who banned the Alcohol? the sad thing is how stupid you can get
Ihab ,   Saudi Arabia   (04.14.08)
28. # 24 Its in the occupied terrotories on stolen land
Simon ,   TA Israel   (04.14.08)
29. Thousand Island/ alcohol
red wine. Looked at the ingredient and the tempest in a teapot was Red Wine! And it was very far down on the list. I am sure that when arabs eat fruit their bodies produce more alcohol in their stomachs than could possibly be in Thousand Island. I say put MORE IN- for the likopens (sp) or something or other! I'm going to find and make my homemade version and see how much red wine can be added before turning it into a mess. What a nice idea! Red wine!! I'll bet it cuts the "mayonaise" taste!
me ,   Israel, Israel   (04.14.08)

The sad thing is you think you are entitled to call other people stupid. Let's see if you dare call sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi stupid: CAIRO: Sheikh Youssef Al-Qaradawi, Muslim scholar known for his moderate views on religious issues, once again sparked controversy when he declared that it is permissible for Muslims to drink beverages containing a miniscule level of alcohol, in an interview that ran in the Qatari Al-Arab newspaper. http://bennauro.blogspot.com/2008/04/sheikh-al-qaradawi-muslims-can-drink.html
