It's been the Persian Gulf for as long as I can remember. When my cousin had a tour of duty in the Persian Gulf (naval vessel), I knew where he'd been. Had he told me he'd been in the Arabic Gulf, I wouldn't have had the foggiest idea where he'd been. It's not some wicked conspiracy by Google to change the name. I'm not sure how the name came to be changed, but I doubt it was done to tick off the Persians. I would like the name 'Persian Gulf' back, myself. I'm not surprised that the Persians, disliking(hating/loathing) the Arabs as they do, don't care for this new name. Doesn't take much for Iran's leaders to view conspiracies against the country everywhere ... even in the name given to a body of water. Who decides to change these names?!
