1. Here is what's needed
MOE ,   RAMALLAH,Palestine   (04.20.08)
A full withdraw right to the 1949 line between Israel and Syria. But all water sources should be controlled by the 2 countries together with INTL supervision The Golan will be NON-Militirized But so will parts of Northern Israel Syria will hand over Eli Cohen to his family in Israel and Israel will free some more Arab prisoners
2. arab leaders tell their people more than Israeli ones do
zionist forever   (04.20.08)
I wouldnt be surprised if this is true and if we want information on the so called peace process on either the palestian or Syrian front then its the arab newspapers where your going to get the truth. Olmert has been doing alot of deals on both sides and the Israeli public dont know a thing about what he is promising or the odd rumor. We have the millitary talking in the media about what should be secret information but we have our politicians doing all kinds of political deals with enemies and the public dont know whats going on. Olmert says publicly he is not discussing Jerusalem but only a fool would belive that and certainly we have Livni discussing it. We need some kind of open government there is more infomation in arab media than Israel it seems we are the ones with the dictaitor that doesnt let the people know any of the issues that will affect the country. Constitution New political system that involves directly ellected MKS not party apointments as things stand the party gets ellected the leaders decide who will serve. There is no loyalty to the public at all the only priority is to keep the boss happy. These ellections must be regional based and the MKS must hold regular discususions with the local people listen to their problems and represent their issues in the Knesset because if they dont they wont get rellected. Get rid of this coalition system. It creates unstable government, policies need to be compromised on for the sake of keeping a coalition together & it creates coruption. Lets have a court system based on having a jury ( ordinary people decide if your guilty or inocent ) not the much more closed European sytem where a bunch of judges behind closed doors decide not only if your inocent or guilty but also decide how severe the punishments should be. Reduce the power of the Histadrut its unacceptble that students should be out of school for months & other instiutions can decide to join the strike if they feel sympathy towards the school teachers in even the most socialist westernisde countries unions would not have that kind of power it causes huge damage to the country. The country is about to celebrate its 60th aniversry and we have a system that should have been replaced decades ago its full of coruption and the public have no political representation.

The Golan should never have been in Syrian hands it is only due to the fact that the British & French broke the terms of their Legue of Nations mandates when the British traded the Golan Heights to France for a province of Iraq who had the mandate for creating the new states of Syria and Lebanon. Under the Legue of Nations mandate which the British were given the Golan was supposed to go to the jewsh state. It is imposrtant to Israel today for a varaiaty of reasons. SECURITY - even in an age of missles and jets high ground is still strategicly important. ECONOMIC - The produce from the Golan ( up untill 1967an ovegrown Syrian minefield ) and tourism earns millions for Israel every year & that would be lost. Also the cost of creating over 30 thousand jewish refugees would be huge and even with outside help Israels taxpayers would still be paying the bill for the next decade. Pulling 8,000 jews out of Gaza cost over $1 billion and even today nearly 3 years later many of them dont have full permanent accomodation or jobs so apart from the inital moving costs they are costing the state money. Jobs cant be created out of thin air. NO NEED - Syria has been no millitary threat to Israel since 1973 & Assad fears Israel alot more than Israel fears him... its Israel in the dominant position so there is no need for a treaty for the sake of having a treaty. In Gaza there were 8000 jews surounded by 1 million hostile palestians in the Golan the jews are not only the demographic majority but mostly live peacefully with their druze naighbors. So whats the rush TERROR - unless he wants to be overthrown Assad cannot start arresting brave martyrs who are controled by both Syria and Iran so giving him the Golan would just bring the terrorists closer to Israel. IRAN - Syria cannot afford to give up its strategic alliance with Iran who is going to pull the strings behind the scenes when it comes to Syrian policy once it has the Golan .. Israel enemy of the arab & islamic world or Iran a country thats given Syria weapons, money and it has a millitary pact with? WATER - treaties mean nothing they can be broken at anytime and allowing Syria access to Israels precious water sources is a crazy idea. Israel has very little to gain from a treaty with Syria but alot to loose. Israel also holds all the cards because it has the millitary capabilities, powerfull friends and the territory itself Syria has non of that so why should we play by Syrias rules for a treaty we dont need? Israel also has the morral claim to the Golan as its historicly jewish land, it was never meant to go to Syria, we captured it legaly so let Syria pay the price for its hostilities .. there is planty of other land in Syria for Assad to play with he doesnt need the JEWISH & ISRAELI Golan.

3 of the 4 issues you address involve compromises by both sides. Why no balancing action by Syria for Israel's full withdrawal?
5. confrontation!!!!!!!!
ROBERT ,   FArmington,usa   (04.21.08)
Am I reading this right "the road to peace goes through confrontation i believe what he is saying once we kill all the jews then syria can have peace, sounds like a declaration of war to me, may the lord forever bless the state of israel and the people of israel!!!!!!!
6. Re #3 Zionist
MOE ,   RAMALLAH, Palestine   (04.21.08)
You make a good case regarding the Golan. Now tell me what is your position on a Palestinian state?
7. Time for Syria to be generous with Israel.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (04.21.08)
Syria should ask Israel for peace and offer in exchange the Golan. But of course that will not happen. So, there is no reason for Israel to be generous with the Mafia regime of Assad. The Assad family has established a hereditary dynasty shored up by repression within, and confrontation and terror abroad. The rule of the Assads is not aimed at improving the lot of their people or forwarding a particular ideology. They changed ideology from secular Arabism to a seemingly impossible confection of pan-Arabism and Islamist extremism. It is pointless to “engage” Syria in dialogue except insofar as it is possible to confront them with their violations and insist that they mend their ways as explained at : http://xrl.us/bjcsd
8. #6 MOE, RAMALLAH -
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (04.21.08)
#3 Zionist does indeed make a good case - but I'll take it a step further. Syria is an enemy state with whom we are still technically in a state of war. Syria attacked us militarily on several occasions. Syria supports terrorism against us, arms Hezbollah, & is allied with Iran. Since we are by far militarily stronger, why shouldn't our policy be to completely destroy Syria as an organized political entity? No evidence suggests that Syria will ever be anything but an enemy, with or without he Golan. War with Syria would be the first move in dealing with Iran. As a side benefit, it would be a chance to rid ourselves of Hezbollah. As to your other question, even though you didn't ask me, I'll tell you anyway. I believe in complete reciprocity. Read the Hamas Charter, the PLO charter, statements by various Fatah officials, religious leaders, etc. - and wherever they say Israel & Jews, I would apply the same to Palestine & Palestinians. What you would do to us is what I would do to you. That's fair, isn't it?
9. "The road to peace goes through confrontation"
Millie ,   Israel   (04.21.08)
Nuff said. No need to delude yourselves. OlmertBarakLivni, are you listening to these words - or only what you want to hear?
10. The rules for peace negociations.
FO ,   Belgium   (04.21.08)
As Syria occupied the Golan Heights till 1967 in total breach of the resolutions of the League of Nations voted unanimously by its 51 members, and this because the treacherous behaviour of Britain as mandatory power, the following rules should be applied before starting any negotiations. 1. Syria should pay compensations to Israel for damage caused by shelling the Upper-Galilea, causing death, physical and material damage. 2. Syria should recognize the resolutions of the League of Nations that remain valid till this day, stating that the Golan is part of Israel's territory. Once this achieved real peace negotiations can start !
11. Now that is funny!!
Kev ,   London   (04.21.08)
"Damascus denies having an nuclear program, and North Korea says it was not involved in any such project. Syria did not retaliate for the attack. " Ha ha!! ...Syria did not retaliate
