2. Yom Ha’atzma’ut - Independence Day Holiday or Fast?
Miriam ,   Israel   (05.07.08)
In the Jewish tradition, Yamim Tovim - Chagim (Holidays) that fall on Shabbat are never rescheduled but fast days that fall on Shabbat are postponed to the following Sunday or moved back to the Thursday before. The Jewish fast days symbolize tragedy that happened to the Jewish nation. By moving back Yom Ha’atzma’ut to Thursday, the state of Israel admits that the creation of the state and everything that transpired afterwards - the spiritual holocaust of turning away hundreds of thousands of Jewish souls, esp. Sephardic and Yemenite, from their Jewish tradition of their forefathers, etc. - is indeed A TRAGEDY and should be a fast day rather than a holiday.

13. To Fast or to Celebrate ? Connection - with Nation & Land
YITZAK BEN SHLOMO ,   MOUNT BARON, GOLAN   (05.07.08)
Every Reason to CELEBRATE ! WHY ? BECAUSE OF THIS REASON : The prophet Yishayahu says (51:16): "I have put My words in your mouth and have covered you with the shadow of My hand, to plant the heavens and establish the earth and to say to Zion, You are My nation." "To say to Zion" - Targum Yonatan translates: "to those who dwell in Zion." Many midrashim elaborate the connection between the nation of Israel and the land of Israel. This connection goes back to the very beginning of the nation and of the land, to the root and essence of these two great entities. Judaism and the Jewish people are born when Avram is commanded to go to the land of Israel (Bereishit 12): "And God said to Avram: Go out from your land, from your birth-place and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you; and I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, and you will be a blessing." A nation is generally not a deliberate creation. It is always post-facto: when there is a common language, blood relation, a common territory, and common historical experiences, then, over the course of the years, a "nation" comes into being. Opinions differ as to the process itself and as to whether all of the above elements are necessary for the creation of a nation. But the decision to establish a nation was a one-time phenomenon in the history of mankind. There is every reason to celebrate,

thanks so much for your "support". we all could do without it, however. in anycase, we are thriving, progressing and living life to the fullest. our youth are brilliant, educated, patriotic and living a life of hope and modernity. i only wish you and your naqbah could have not existed had you been smart enough to accept the 1947 partition mandate as was fit. but, you wanted it all and eventually were left with nothing, with sorrow, vengeance and hate. god, what a way to live. look at us and look at yourselves!
16. One nation, one people, one heart
Tamir ,   Los Angeles   (05.07.08)
Even living so far away from Israel I still get emotional seeing and reading about wonderful events like this. We will be celebrating Israel's independence day here too and it should be an amazing experience. To all those anti-semites out there, be witness to the glory that is the state of Israel. The Jewish people will always be around and together we will outlast any threat that comes our way with the help of god almighty. We wish for nothing but peace but are willing to fight for our livelihood, our identity, our faith.

Joe ,   Ramat Gan   (05.07.08)
Had the Arabs chosen coexistence over genocide in 1947 and 1948, nobody would have had to move anywhere and today would have been a day of rejoicing for "Palestinians" too. I refuse to cry over a Naqba people inflicted on themselves...
