5. Our Customs Deputy Director is obviously right!
Often ,   Away from Home   (05.22.08)
I won't be wearing neckties anymore, especially those beautiful silky italian-manufactured ties! As I travel a lot I was wondering if it is still ok to use the old chastity belts imported from Russia in the 70's.

11. To the Atabeg Atilla #3
Jake   (05.22.08)
I know you dream of a worldwide Islamic caliphate, to be ruled by modern-day hordes of scimitar-wielding Seljuk Turks on horseback, and to have Shariat laws strictly applied by the likes of the Taliban and Iranian mullahs. On the other hand, some of us are in fact interested in getting on with civilized life in the 21 century. I hope that doesn't spoil your party.
12. The problems with neckties is that they are seldom cleaned.
Rivkah   (05.22.08)
there is a lot of contamination on them with bacteria and viruses. At the hospital my husband works at, the professionals no longer wear ties if they have patient contact positions because of the hazard of carrying germs and viruses and parasites from place to place on the ties. I am sure the symbolism of the tie is obvious: a man's phallus. So men are drawn to wear ties as a sign of masculinity. It is a Western custom and considering that the Shah was thrown out of Iran for Westernizing Iran too rapidly, it would be a scary thing for the leader of Iran to want to hurry up Westernization. It is a quick route to unemployment for a ruler of Iran.
13. When you consider that most ties are now made in China
Rivkah   (05.22.08)
and that fabrics can be carriers of diseases like the smallpox blankets that infected American Indians long ago, it is good to beware of products from China since they have poisoned cats and dogs and children with toxic products they had to know were toxic. Melanine was put into pet foods to kill American pets. Rhohypnol (date rape drug) was put into glaze on toys so children sucking the toys would go into comas in America. Antifreeze was put into salad oil to make Americans sick. All this was from China. Now most neckties are made in China, especially silk neck ties. They should be tested for contaminants since fabrics can be used as vehicles for disease and toxic chemical warfare.
14. you make me laugh #13
j ,   usa   (05.22.08)
Funny stuff, unfortunately, you have been brainwashed TOTALLY by corrupt feminist theory. But it is funny to read. Do yuo still have all your women's studies books from college? Let me guess...Hebrew and Woman's Studies major, right?
15. Hey Monkeyboy
NT Atilla ,   Tel Aviv   (05.22.08)
Nuclear weapons is western technology. Dismantle it! Now go back to your Stone Age and learn to fight with sticks and stones.
16. We laugh but it's not really funny.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (05.22.08)
In fact, it's deadly serious. Imagine the state of mind of Iran's regime. Imagine them with nuclear arms. It's not at all funny. Yes, it's bizarre to a Westerner. But to these Islamic crazies, they feel they're under attack by the West. Their attitude is an extreme example of the paranoia quite widely felt throughout the Islamic world. On a different level, this absolute control of people's lives is a common technique of totalitarian regimes. It is meant to instill fear & obedience, to stifle individuality, to crush the spirit out of people. And, it is a sign of their lack of self-confidence - they know their own people would like to be free of them. To be fair, many people in non-Western cultures have these feelings just to a lesser degree. Pity the Iranian people who must live with this, day in, day out. How absolutely depressing.
17. History of Ties and there menaing...
Isaac ,   Jerusalem   (05.22.08)
Ties developed from the Crevat worn by the Army unit that defeated the Ottaman Empire in Vienna in the 1600's So actually they are a boast of the defeat of the Ottaman / Islamic empire which when you understand this it is not surprising that any regime that is not aligned with the Western Empire err to be politically correct Western Society do not were these. Any Arab that is a Tie wearer is whether he realise it or not saying that he is aligned with the Western Powers.
18. What about rotating bow ties? :-)
Johnny Mac ,   Donegal   (05.22.08)
19. THE REASON IS SIMPLE
Amos   (05.22.08)
When a western woman wants to have sex, she pull a man from his TIE, which "contradict the nature of Iranian culture," The moslimas pull a man from his PENIS,which adopt Iranian customs duties.
20. 14 J: We agree to disagree.I am not a feminist GloriaSteinem
Rivkah   (05.22.08)
I observe a lot of things and read a broad spectrum of books and magazines and newsletters, focusing on theology and medicine issues. If that is funny to you, I am glad I cheered your day. Somethings may be amusing which are totally serious and true.
21. 18 Johnny Mac: Messianic Rabbi Edward Chumney has a wife who
Rivkah   (05.22.08)
is a nurse. He noticed that he got sick often from the viruses, bacteria, parasites, germs, etc. on her clothes when he hugged her when she got home. So, now his wife changes her clothes and puts the work clothes in the laundry before he approaches her and hugs her and gives her a kiss hello. Since neckties that are "cultured" meaning the wee beasties on the fabric are grown in petri dishes to see how toxic the germs ont he ties are. And since those tests show men's ties that are seldom cleaned as a rule are hazardous and full of germs, bacteria, viruses, parasites and other pathogens, it is likely that bow-ties would carry the same risk. But why wear a bow tie that is a symbol of the opposite thing a long tie is a symbol of?
22. Unbelievable
Cameron ,   USA   (05.22.08)
Revolutionary Guard running about on the streets clipping ties? What a trip. Someone ever tried that stunt with one of my Italian silk ties, he'd wind up with a broken arm. Credit to #1 for a very spot-on remark.
23. Dang it!
Gee ,   Zikron Yaakov   (05.22.08)
After all these years of avoiding wearing the darn things because I don't like them. I might have to, just so people won't think me an Iranian.
24. Plus, the damn Joooos control the garment industry!
Avi ,   hilltop, Israel   (05.22.08)
25. Alte Shmates are better suited to Ahmedinejad anyway
Jake   (05.22.08)
What would this vilde haya do with a necktie anyway? What he needs is a leash.
26. 22 Cameron: At the Sneaky Pete's Restaurant in Trail Dust
Rivkah   (05.22.08)
Town in Tucson, Arizona, people who show up wearing a long tie have it cut off by the waiter/waitress and tacked to the wall. There are many, many thousands of cut off ties stapled and tacked to the walls and ceiling. NOW WE KNOW! Trail Dust Town is an Iranian Revolutionary Guard outpost.
27. #22
tarzan   (05.23.08)
Clipping ties is ok. Back in the hardcore revolution days they would clip a womans fingers off for wearing nail polish.( I am not joking first hand knowledge from Iranian refugees in Norway) I guess they've come a long way since then
28. In all fairness
Jason ,   USA   (05.23.08)
It wasn't that long ago that all the Israeli news sites were treating leavened bread at grocery stores as an existential threat. I'd say for kooky, insular cultures you guys are just about even.
29. 27 tarzan: And to think the Iranians thought the Shah was
(05.23.08)
cruel. Guess they have had a taste of what cruelty really is, now.
30. Oh man, your remark had me laughing, Johnny Mac
Cameron ,   USA   (05.23.08)
