2. Kobi Nahshoni - NO NEED TO REPORT ?
YITZAK BEN SHLOMO ,   SYDNEY   (05.23.08)
Look at your last paragraph . What it that....cases there is no need to report .." ( last third line ). exception : willing to receive proper therapy..meet commitments...supervised by resposible elements ? LOOK WHEN A CHILD IS ABUSED IT IS A CRIME AND CRIMES MUST BE REPORTED AND THE CRIMINAL MUST BE ARRESTED , CHARGED , PROSECUTED AND JAILED. THE THERAPY OR THE WILLINGNESS TO RECEIVE PROPER THERAPY IN NO WAY SHOULD SET ASIDE THE OBLIGATION TO INFORM THE AUTHORITIES ! THE OBLIGATION TO REPORT STANDS AS EVER AND ANYONE WHO BACK SLIDE SHOULD BE CARGED TOGETHER AS CONSPIRATOR CRIMINAL. iT IS OBVIOUS MNAY RABBIS IN ISRAEL WILL BE CHARGED FOR NO REPORTING. THERE IS NO LIMITATION PERIOD FOR CRIME. THAT INCLUDES- CRIME RELATED TO CHILD ABUSE !
3. And what of the haredim?
JPS ,   Efrat   (05.23.08)
Religious zionism is only a fraction of the population. The problem of covering up the evil deeds of deviant people is a known sickness in the haredi mindset.
4. Weird report.
Kev ,   London   (05.23.08)
Who on earth would not report such a thing in order to 'protect' the attacker? That's messed up.
5. It goes without a rabbi saying so. Abuse
(05.23.08)
must be exposed whomever is responsible.
6. Reporting Child Abuse
(05.23.08)
an idea that needs to be explained to the holier-than-thou Orthodox community in 2008.
7. Typical
Ben ,   Melbourne   (05.25.08)
its amazing how a proponent rabbi needs to come out and state what all decent normal people already know. there is something wrong with out religion, f those who abide by it can not even perform basic acts of humanitarianism without a rabbi telling him to do so. Furthermore, i wonder how many religious children are currently being abused, with their communities who do not follow the good rabbi, protecting the attacker

The problem in the religious community, from what I've seen, isnt' that people aren't willing to report abuse if they know it's taking place. It's that so many of us are unwilling to assume that abuse is taking place, or unwilling to report mere suspicions. If you look at abuse cases that were uncovered, the violence almost always came to light after a teacher or other adult familiar with the child reported a suspicion, NOT something they knew 100% to be correct. In the religious world we learn to be "dan l'chaf zchut," to judge favorably, and many take that to mean that if a child is acting strangely, or has many bruises, we should assume that s/he falls a lot, or that premature sexual knowledge is the fault of older classmates sharing information and not abuse, etc. Few people are willing to report suspicions to the authorities, but of course there is almost never concrete proof that a child is being abused--abusers aren't that stupid--so many cases go unreported. Instead of focusing on the need to report known abuse, IMO Rabbi Aviner and others need to focus on the need to report suspicions of abuse. The goal should be teaching religious teachers, daycare workers, etc, to work with the secular authorities and not avoid them. Also, people need to know that children will not be snatched from their homes following a single report unless something is truly wrong. Too many people think reporting a suspicion will send a child straight to foster care, which is completely untrue.
