'Withdrawal from Golan basis for direct talks'    Reuters
1. I thought they said "no preconditions"?
I guess that only applies to us. Olmert has already surrendered everything!
Arie ,   BaGolan   (06.10.08)
2. Those Syrians...
They demand so little, but they will give SOOOOO much in exchange!
Elder of Zion   (06.10.08)
3. The people of Israel are against giving away the Golan.
Yossi Peled, former Northern District Command chief for the IDF, called a withdrawal from the Golan Heights "suicide." Peled took a philosophical turn and concluded by saying, "Peace for the Jewish State is not a goal. Peace is a means to a goal, and our goal is to ensure the physical existence of the Jewish State. That is the goal and hopefully we will then be able to achieve peace." There is no majority in the Knesset, nor in the nation for withdrawal from the Golan - more than 70 out of the 120 Knesset Members oppose withdrawal from the Golan Heights. Among the Israeli public, Katz claimed, 70% oppose concessions on the Golan. Giving the golan to Syria, means having Iran in the Golan. he is no position to make such demands,

5. Withdraw from the Golan until Teveria for Syria talk
Withdraw from Jerusalem, Judea & Samaria, Sderot, Ashkelon Haifa and Ashdod for Hamas talk. STOP these silly TALKINGS with the Arabs and learn how to fight for your rights. And yes, Israel is allowed to win.
Miriam ,   Israel   (06.10.08)
6. syria talks
Olmert is going soon. On behalf of the state of israel, I am prepared to discuss a peace treaty with you. In advance, I tell you that Golan and mt dov are israeli territory and are non negotiable. The peace treaty will be based on freindly relations. If you launch missiles into tel aviv, we will turn damascus into a glass factory, all of it. As for the palestinians, they will be all deported to jordan since england apportioned 80 % of mandate to Jordan. Finally, Olmert will be removed from israel and has asked if he could be a citizen of syria. We said it his choice. One thing for certain, he can never ever live in the state of israel again.

7. Hezbollah are waiting for a cue
President Assad will have to contend with Hezbollah if Syria makes peace with Israel. If Israel gives the Golan to Syria the Syrian government will have to station a large military contingent there in order to prevent Hezbollah supporters from using it as base to stage attacks against Israel. Having a large Syrian military presence in the Golan will require a bigger Israeli presence in the near vicinity. Such an Israeli deployment would have to be permanent and would be a target for attacks by terrorists from Golan. If Assad thinks he can make peace with Israel without the support of the Syrian people he is wrong. That would have to be demonstrated in a referendum otherwise opposition groups would feel confident to directly oppose any agreement. Hezbollah and Iran would arm and supply such dissidents in Syria. They could tear the country apart. So.......... Israel should keep the Golan and put more pressure in the Iranians and Lebanese to adopt a culture of peace as defined in the UN's Declaration on a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence. Or Syria must trim its demands and agree to let Israel hold on to the Golan until such time as Hezbollah declares a permanent non aggression policy with respect to Israel ...... and until such time as Iran establishes a peace accord with Israel without any preconditions involving Palestine. With those kinds of relations in place it will be easier and quicker for Palestinians to get their State. STATE = Noun: an organized community under one government; a condition of being or existence. STATE = Verb: articulate or express words in speech or writing. But I prefer the idea that Syria give the Golan to Israel as war reparation. With Israel and Syrian government paying a fair financial compensation to any Syrian citizen with a private claim to property or estate in the Golan Amen ve Amen

9. One dictaitor talks to another dictaitor
Basicly Assad is saying garuntee me the prize in advance then we can talk. Olmert is so wrapped up in his own self interests of staying out of prison and reciving nobel prizes there is no such thing as a price to high and if the public dnont like it well thats just their problem dont bother me with your demands because this is my country and I will do with it as I wish. After a matter of months of on an off talks indirectly Olmert has allready as good as done the deal and the public hasnt even been told anythiing we are going to wake up one morning to the official handover cermony. He wants to sell the country to satisfy his politicl ego probably be awarded a nobel peace prize and he is going to getting praise from most the western world be told he is a visionry a great man etc and then he will resign, go to live in Europe with his sons beyond Israels justice system. and all it cost was the Golan. Israel is fast becoming a dictaitorship and the country is being sold piece by piece but the opposition still isnt forcing anew ellection just talking about what should they dio .. let Kadima stay in power under Olmert, let Kadima stay in power under a new leader probably Livni who is politicly just as bad as Olmert or should they force an ellection. Olmert should have been gone over a year ago at least but the man is like a leach and he has managed to cling to power longer than some other unpopular governments have done in the past The people need to march in the streets demand ellections & the oppsition need to say enough is enough for the good of the country we demand new ellections now. Everybody shouts and screams at Olmert but once they have got ot out their system then they settle down and wait for the next anouncement to be made by our beloved dictaitor.

10. Assad is correct, Israel should end its illegal occupations
The Israeli occupations of the Golan, Lebanon and Palestine are illegal under international law, the UN Charter and UNSCR 242, which not only states that the acquisition of land by war is inadmissible, but also calls for Israel's withdrawal from land it occupied during the 1967 war. Note: For those who argue that the lack of "the" gives Israel the right to keep some of the land it occupies, please demonstrate how the statement "Keep off Grass" implies that it is OK to trample on some of the grass of your choosing. It is certainly reasonable to expect Israel to fully abide by International law and abide by UNSCR 242 as part of any peace agreement between it and those states whose land it currently occupies. There is no legal or legitimate argument that Israel can make where by it would be entitled to keep the occupied territory under international law or the UN Charter of which they signed, both of which were in force at the time of their occupation. If Arab States are willing to make peace with Israel, then the principals of UNSCR 242 should be implemented and enforced and a peace accord arranged where by both the occupations and hostilities can finally come to an end.

11. Syria is Arab, that should be enought to know that they are

12. Ignore Asad.

13. #10 LOL idiots taking the law into their hands
You don't even know what you are reading and you try to pass an interpretation? Is there a difference between "return territories" and "return the territories" as referenced in UNR 242? Of course, that is why the US held to one wording while the Soviets wanted another. If the Soviets would have stuck their guns we would have had troops in Cairo and Damascus.

14. The demand of Assad to receive the Golan is the proof it...
The demand of Assad to receive the Golan is the proof it is not peace that Syria wants. Israel and Syria have never had diplomatic relations, and have been in a state of war ever since 1948. In 1967, Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria, which had used the area for years to pound Israeli towns below with deadly rockets. These attacks killed 140 Israelis, wounded many more, and inflicted heavy property damage. Since 1967, Syria has always demanded the full return of the Golan as a precondition for “peace”. Nowadays, the Golan is an integrated region of Israel More at : http://xrl.us/bmfrf

15. #10 - You are wrong...
The word "illegal" has no bearing here. This word is never used anywhere in the UNSCR 242document. Lord Caradon, chief architect of the resolution, said, "It would have been wrong to demand that Israel return to its positions of June 4, 1967, because those positions were undesirable and artificial. After all, they were just the places where the soldiers of each side happened to be on the day the fighting stopped in 1948. They were just armistice lines. That’s why we didn’t demand that the Israelis return to them." Abba Even called the untenable June 4, 1967 positions as the "Auschwitz lines". and with good reason. The IDF fought 2 wars to return and retain the Golan to its rightful owners, Israel. There is no Syrian goodwill. As it was before the '67 war, when Syrians shot at Israeli farmers in the fields below, if the Golan would be given to the Syrians, it would again be in the position to attack Israel with even more dangerous weapons. Israel would become one large prison camp, under siege from all sides, except the sea - and even that is not so secure. Auschwitz, indeed. Historically, the Golan was Jewish. Only during the First Temple Period did Damascus (who else?) attacked and seized it.
