1. Let me remind you that the first to start shooting
Palestinian   (06.22.08)
and using helicopters and gunships against Palestinians was Israel in a show of strength that aimed at silencing our aspirations to demand our rights and our desire to get rid of this racist regeime that exist in this area.... While surely we lost on the materialistic side, we are still keeping our dignity, our aspirations.... We stood fast against crusades, and we will stand fast against zionism until a day that only God knows when it comes, when we are relieved.
2. Not everyone has forgotten ....
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (06.22.08)
Despite the relentless efforts by most of your collegues to brainwash the Israeli public into defeat & appeasement, those of us with an attention span longer than that of a goldfish remember the intifada & also remember how it was defeated. What we should remember, actually, is how long it took before we acted, a major mistake we should not repeat. That is the real lesson.
3. #1, actually the first to start shooting was Palestinians
Danny   (06.22.08)
4. Rabin/Peres started Oslo War
Alex ,   LA, USA   (06.22.08)
The author forgot to mention that Rabin and Peres started the Oslo War. Barak was resposible as well. Why he did not mention Rabin and Peres? The answer is obvious. Is this author so uninformed?
5. Lessons learned
Brian ,   Boston, USA   (06.22.08)
2 things: 1. You "stood fast" against the crusades 1,000 years after the Jews were thrown out of ancient Israel, so let's not pretend like you were the original people of our land. You weren't. You conquered it and built your mosque in Jerusalem on our Temple Mount. Those are facts. 2. The real lesson of the second intifada is that we need a 2-pronged approach to fighting terror. Harsh military response, but also negotiations with the less extreme elements of Palestinian leadership. A reduction of settlement activity is probably called for; let's not pretend however that if we just ceased all the building then suddenly the Palestinians will rush to open their doors and have us over for coffee and baklava!

Zionism, the Jewish longing to return to their homeland, predates the birth of Islam by over 500 years. Zionism will always exist. If your leaders were not so single-minded about Jews "not having one square centimeter" over which to rule themselves between the Jordan River and the Sea, you would have a state of your own.
7. denial
daat y ,   jerusalem   (06.22.08)
Excellent evaluation. However it does not 'border' on denial but is actually'psychotic denial' to our physical danger.
8. Excellent Article
David ,   Montreal, Canada   (06.22.08)
Too bad those living in most denial are the current government of Israel. Deals for temporary cease fires in exchange for essentially nothing. Deal with them like yassin (y'mach shemo v'zirono) and let them rot in hell.

While it is true that Judaism ceased to exist in a major way 500 years before the rise of Islam, I disagree that today's Palestinians are not the original people of the land. You have to know that Palestinians continued to practice Christianity in their majority until the end of the Ummayid period. The spread of Islam in Palestine was by conversion not by replacing existing populations. The same thing could be said about how Islam spread in central Arabia itself. Finally, Palestine had significant Arabian connection simply because it is in north Arabia and in an area where other non hebrew semitic tribes also existed. Examples include Nabateans, Ghassanids, Idumeans, and others... Judaism is a religion from which and to which you can convert. It is apparent that majority of the Middle East abandoned the Jewish tradition... A fact that you may have missed is that 20% of the Roman empire population were practicing Judaism... In Alexandria Egypt, there was a significant Jewish population. It is important to mention that some Palestinian families mention their Jewish origin. For example, some families in Hebron are know historically to have converted from Judaism... The largest family in Hebron, al-Tamimi family, is in fact, descendents are named after Tamīm al-Dārī who was a Palestinian Christian who heard of the Prophet Muhammad, and came all the way from PAlestine to meet with him. al-Tamimi goes back to the semitic Aramaic/Arabic speaking people of Palestine.... You may want to buy a book or two that discusses the origins of the Palestinian families of today, both Christian and Muslim families, and their genealogies... This has been done in several books some of them are as Old as 600 years, and some are published recently : Some Palestinian familes still practice Judaic traditions like the Samaritans.. Although they insist they are not Jews, they do actually believe in the Old testament only.
10. It's forgotten because
Misha ,   Tel Aviv   (06.22.08)
Arafat died, and apparently the intifada died with him

12. lessons
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (06.23.08)
Sever Plocker says that "we" have forgotten the lessons of the 2nd Intifada, but "we" haven't. The media, political journals and cultural institutions ignore it because the lessons are inconvenient. Some lessons: Arafat never intended to make peace, so the whole basis of the Oslo accords was wrong. Ehud Barak is incompetent and his failing brought about the 2nd Intifada. An Israeli PM who has no public support should not negotiate. Offers of land concession by Israel lead to war and bloodshed. When Israel is led by the Left, Israeli Arabs join the "Palestinian cause" and Israel's existence is in danger. When led by the Right wing (this was before Sharon joined Meretz), the IDF can easily defeat Arab terror.
13. only one lesson
nora ,   jerusalem   (06.23.08)
a new thing replace the old may be worstto palastinian and sure it is worse to israili in general security and the prognosis of the conflict from worse to worse no one know the best to do for the peace but for the war or the killing or the hard life .life is not only to eate and to sleep it is the second day also .the unkown day to both palastinian and israili as well
14. # 9 very interesting
jerusalem   (06.23.08)
can you post the names of some of these books you mentioned , iam interested in buying them ...
15. #1 Palestinian - What happened in Hebron in 1929?
Scott ,   USA   (06.30.08)
Palestinians have been slaughtering Jews for centuries. They just don't like it when their prey learns to shoot back. And they really, really, hate losing. Such infants.
16. #14 - Don't bother, "Observer" doesn't know anything.
Scott ,   USA   (06.30.08)
He thinks that the Samaritans are Muslims with Jewish traditions -- they aren't. They've been there since Babylonian times. And so on. The Palestinians have a very confusing history, but it does appear that the majority were Christians until the 17th century.
