redmiike ,   Tel Aviv, London, LA   (06.23.08)
Can you imagine anyone kidnapping a Russian, Chinese, Turkish etc soldier and using him as a bargaining chip? No one would try to kidnap Israelis soldiers or civilians if they got nothing in return. I hope we are not about to teach that "crime pays" and thereby provide a huge incentive to kidnap as many Israelis as possible. Mike

In order to understand what Mr. Eitan is stating, we must put aside our logic. I totally agree with this ariticle. Even though I believe that Mr. Olmert is the worst PM we have ever had, even his Jewish heart might be in effect too. Anyone who has been in the IDF, or knows people who have been trained by the IDF, knows that our soldiers are just about brainwashed with the idea that the IDF is a humane army. Hard to conceive of such a creature, but it's something we actually have been able to create. I'm not saying if this is right or wrong. If this is efficient or not. It's just the way it is. The IDF can't be cruel even if it tries to be. I know that there are individual cases of IDF soldier acting cruelly towards PAL's or prisoners, but this is not the norm. And it's not the policy of either the army or the various governments. Just also have to say, that I will never forget feeling of being betrayed and lost during the 2006 fighting we had up here in the North. Mr. Olmert, Mr. Halutz and Mr. Peretz remain a traumatic memory till this day. The trauma of knowing there is no leadership here, even and especially in that 'wartime' situation.... horrific. But the people came together...that always warms the heart.
8. Haber's heart belongs to Olmert
Ron ,   Tel Aviv   (06.23.08)
As to Olmert heart, ask his bankers and other family friends. Do you think for a moment, that Sharonchick exchanged the drug dealer because of his heart? Money. Sharonchick would had sold a Jew for cash for his family.

Fraknly, the subject line says it all although it could be stronger. The real question is. for all the Arabs "traded" in a prisoner swap, How many were truly 'security risks'??? Apparently, not many otherwise the Israeli government would never approve of such a swap. The Israeli government reminds me of a thief who steals 100 Dollars, and then when his accomplice is arrested offers 75 dollars to get the accomplice's charged dropped. Then the thief proclaims his morality by stating that he gave an exorbitant price for the accomplice's release. A true showing of the "jewish" heart.
12. Then and now
Maskil ,   JHB (ZA)   (06.26.08)
I guess the difference between “then” and “now” is that then the IDF would have mounted operations and handed out bloody noses to secure the release of hostages and MIAs. Now, the tendency is to consider all sorts of prisoner exchange deals, usually involving swapping live Arab murderers for the bodies (or body parts) of dead Jews. In this way, Jewish hostages have gone from being a liability in the hands of their captors to an asset that can be used as a bargaining chip. Another example of the erosion of Israel’s deterrence? /
