1. Haber - the voice of losers ....
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (07.09.08)
Mr Haber, with total lack of respect, I ask you to go away. Stop writing. Go feed pigeons in the park. You have made a career supporting loser ideas, loser politicians. Every idea you have ever had, every belief, every strategy for our country, has been a failure. Yet you continue to babble useless nonsense - you disprove the notion that with age comes wisdom. People like you are ruining this country - shamelessly & with no apology at that. Your defeatist attitudes & rationalizations of failure have become the nauseating chorus in the tragic soap opera known as Israeli politics.
2. Findings of the last war in Lebanon.
Robert Bernier ,   Tel Aviv   (07.09.08)
Following the last war in Lebanon, Israel will have to draw certain major lessons to ensure its long-term strategic survival. What is needed now, immediately and urgently, are thoughtful and coherent guidelines concerning national defense, deterrence, targeting and even preemption (anticipatory self-defense). It is no longer adequate for Israel (more or less capably) to merely stumble from one war to the next without an appropriate “master plan” for direction. Armed with such a framework of expanded conceptual understanding, the Jewish state could quickly begin to deduce pertinent tactics and policy options to match particular situations and crises. In the near-term, of course, the need of both nuclear war avoidance and counter-WMD terrorism. The war against Hizbullah does not concern Israel only, as explained at: http://xrl.us/bi3hn
3. A time for Action, not passive reflection
Millie ,   Israel   (07.09.08)
This is a major problem with our society. We have passive leaders who persistently pursue delusional and unattainable goals, like the Syrian or Palestinian "negotiations" that tear away at the fabric of Israeli society and encourage further endangerment by our vicious, genocidal enemies. The media, unfortunately, extenuate these dangerous positions and attitudes. The past 2 years in the aftermath of the 2006 Lebanon debacle were squandered. In this time, Israel could have repaired its deterrent capabilities and built a system to better protect its citizens for the confrontation to come. Instead, Israeli civilians have become the exposed war front, while our so-called leaders insulate themselves with legalistic manipulations and dangerous negotiations and posturing. Reflection is about the last thing we need to do.
4. Bad leadership, no sense of strategy
VVR   (07.09.08)
The war was a failure, because Israeli leadership didn't take it correctly: One should have launched a major ground offnesive in the days following the first air raiuds, and bring the Israeli troops to Beirut. the war should not have ended without the takeover of the Hezb secret bunker under the iranian embassy an the dead of nessrallah
5. 2 Years have passed
Millicent ,   Israel   (07.09.08)
and the Gov has still learned nothing, still the Homefront is not prepared for any future conflict, our gas masks are still sitting on shelves in the IDF Storage rooms. Our bomb shelters in many areas are in disrepair. Not to mention Sderot without shelters and they are currently under rocket fire ! This government refuses to learn the lessons of 2 years ago and is putting our lives in Jepordy!
6. When is Haber going to apologise for Oslo &1500 Dead Jews?
The Historian ,   Raananana   (07.09.08)
Eitan; You are a strategically incompetant, useless, & corrupt idiot.
7. Defeatism glimpses, good time to toughen
Jul ,   Liverpool, UK   (07.09.08)
It's probably easy for me to write that from the distance but if Israel starts to think in this self-defeating, post-modern way, it's doomed. Israel is still in a situation where it needs to fight to guarantee its existence while at the same time, its people enjoy a typical western standard of life. These 2 things are hard to sustain simultaneously and from the israelis I know, Israel is managing. Because nowadays, no country is safe (immigration, terrorism), Israel has a double mission : not only fighting for its own survival but also show the way to those sleepy, fat-bellied western countries that you can be comfortable and still willing to fight when required.
8. complete rubbish
Doron   (07.09.08)
the lebanon war could have been won with better strategy and with some more determination and perserverance, based on the concept that losing the lebanon war sets israel up for more costly wars in the future. imagine if israel had used ground troops earlier, with a more sustained and directed strategy. yes, the casualties would have been greater - allowing hezbollah to fester on the border since the withdrawal left a nest that was (and will be more) costly to clean. but, if hezbollah had been destroyed, islamic fundamentalism would have been significantly discredited (like nasserism was after 1967) and iran's position vis-a-vis the current nuclear situation would have been markedly reduced. all this was not achieved because of politicians like olmert more concerned with his own skin. and he continues. the next war with hezbollah WILL be coming, because of the failure in 2006, and it will be more bloody because of the failure in 2006. Israel will still be able to win, if it perseveres, if it realizes that losing is not an option, but the cost will be even greater. destruction or removal from the scene of hezbollah is of massive importance (either militarily or diplomatically). withdrawal from lebanon initially set the stage for the current state of affairs, and it is the fact that hezbollah is still around that gives encouragement to islamic fundamentalists and iran. destruction of hezbollah could lead to a turning point in the entire middle east, with a real peace process possible.
9. so much for taking responsibility
(07.09.08)
10. stupid article
alexi   (07.09.08)
These are the words of an idealistic dreamer who has little concept of reality.Heabollah is the # 1 terror army in the world and idf was and still has not figured it out even with ashkenazi. Dror pointed out that olmert is a disaster that haber's party sustains in power. Finally everyone knows a weakling and liar when he sees it and olmert is the dictionnary defintion of it. There is nothing he can do about it. he has no guts and he is weak. iT WILL NEVER CHANGE.
11. The Truth
Shlomo The Homo ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (07.09.08)
This is the truth and nothing but the truth...great job Mr Haber.
12. Nothing new, but also nothing that shouldn't be repeated
Jack Klaber ,   R. Hasharon, Israel   (07.09.08)
13. To #1: The voice of a deaf person ...
Jack Klaber ,   R. Hasharon, Israel   (07.09.08)
He who sees but does not observe; He who hears but does not listen; He who touches but does not feel; He who talks but does not speak; He who writes but does not informs...... Mr. Terry, I ask you to fade away. Stop writing. Go ....... Yes, what Eytan Haber said has been said before in some other words. But it bears repeating. I would have condoned your criticism if you also would have provided positive and realistic alternatives or solutions. You failed in many accounts, as so many that ruined the country - shamelessly & with no apology at that.
14. C'mon...
Hansje   (07.09.08)
...every other army, after obtaining this results from a fight with fanatical terrorist(Litany reached in just 48 hours, bunkers and communications of Hez pulverised, 25 %of the terrorists killed, staying in South Lebanon for almost 3 months), would have organised a big parade and general would got nice medals. But in Israel, no, waining instead! Why? Because our bar of succes is so high. Hez. doesn't need to win, only staying alive, that's all. And is this a military 'victory'in the real sense for Hez.? Not at all, but their bar is soooo low! Imaging what Israel would have accomplished when she had gone in full offensive with proper preparation! So Haber, you're completely wrong.
15. Shalom
Michael ,   Moscow, US   (07.09.08)
At a first glance this article seems like a typical rubbish projected from an individual of a Moldovan – Galician mestechkovii heritage. But bear in mind that this so-called ‘distinguished commentator’ has an enormous power of access to the media to publicize his dreck and to form a national opinion based on it. These powers are vested in him by his co-followers of Shalom-idol cult. Haber’s previous articles were vociferous cult worships but this one surpasses them all. Now he asks from Shalom-idol to reverse a flow of time and return the situation to a pre-war. It could be funny if it weren’t so sad to see that so many Israelis do believe in capabilities of that idol. Stop it now before many more human sacrifices were made to redeem a false god of ‘Shalom’.
