1. personal sidearms
Yisraeli   (07.24.08)
Eitan, this used to be the case. I remember when the Police used to call out for those with licensed sidearms to wear them when going out when there was prolifiration of terror. The police cant be everywhere all of the time. So its wise to rely on responsible citizens who are licensed to call on them to carry their pistols in public. But that all changed after Rabin's assasination. Now they made out as if Jews were the dangerous ones who have weapons, just because of 1 man Amir who they lumbered the entire Jewish indentifying public. So they started to make it harder to get a license and removed weapons from many Jews. Yet at the same time the government supplied tens of thousand of weapons to terrorists. Im sure Eitan you recall the trend and what happened in those days which still continues till today. We often are our own worst enemy.
2. Start of civil revolt
Moses ,   Jerusalem   (07.24.08)
Can you see giving guns to the average Joe on the street here in israel ? the goverment would pee themselves next week the whole population would be shooting at the goverment offices , thats without the charadim with a gun could you imagine a charady with a gun ? how about all of them ? whos driving on shabbat !!! bang bang
3. Declare jerusalem ishuv kav ha tefer
yerushalmi ,   jerusalem   (07.24.08)
Yerushalmim should be able to get gun permit with same ease as people that live in yosh. All that needs to be done is for goverment to declare jerusalem city be kav ha tefer, and tell the interior ministry to grant handgun permits to all jerusalem residents that served in IDF and have clean records. Good idea would be to open free courses of tactical shooting (similar as given to security guards), since we don't really learn how to use handguns in IDF, plain IDF veterans don't really know how to handle them.
4. BRAVO!
Elchonon ,   Chevron   (07.24.08)
As a US gun owner and licensed concealed carrier in 33 states... I have always been branded a nutjob by israeli's.. The retort I get every time is "why do you need a gun" my reply ? I dont.. but when I do.. It will be too late. They say i'm millitant and nuts and whatever you can think of. No, I just have been shooting my entire adult life.. i'm accurate up to 45 yards.. I can draw and fire in under 3 seconds. No, I would not freeze or hesitate, I would draw, take perfect aim and shoot the terrorist.
5. ONE MAN, MADE SURETY FOR TEN .
ROLAND SEENER ,   LONDON ENGLAND   (07.24.08)
ALL ARAB CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTS MUST STIPULATE THAT THE WORKER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR TEN MEN AND THEIR PERMANENT DISMISSAL FROM WORKING IN ISRAEL SHOULD G"D FORBID HE CARRY OUT SUCH AN ACT THAT EVEN ONE CIVILIAN IS WOUNDED. THERE ARE PLENTY OF OTHER FOREIGN NATIONALS TO CHOOSE FROM WHO ADMIRE ISRAEL AND COULD WORK AS THEIR REPLACEMENTS !
6. Where are we going-1 ?
Ariel ,   Natanya   (07.24.08)
Lets begin from 1948... If the "Dromi" law was voted and adapted 60 years ago we'll feel safer in our houses and in our country today. Now, today you can even not testify against your burglar... The police is obliging the good guy to confront the devil and do not forget to inform you that he will not protect you....
7. No it's not the only way to stop them
(07.24.08)
Just pass a law that forbid arab to work on a construction site. Period.
8. # 7 so who is going to do the work ?
Simon ,   TA the free city   (07.24.08)
As we all know arabs are the main source of workers in the construction industry because Israelis dont want to do such jobs and secondly because the contractors pay low wages in order to make maximum profits. So if you suggest not employing arabs on sites then who is going to take their place? Is it not also wrong to judge an entire nation on the actions of a minority? How about the charadeem give them a job maybe?
9. Wrong! - Use geo-fencing or radio-fencing
Millie ,   Israel   (07.24.08)
There are 2 accessible and cost-effective technologies to stop attacks using heavy vehicles. In addition to improved screening procedures for heavy equipment operators, contracting companies can be made to install either "geo-fencing" or "radio-fencing". See: http://irabrodsky.com/index.php?/archives/27-How-to-Prevent-Bulldozer-Attacks.html "One [technology] is called geo-fencing. Bulldozers can be equipped with GPS receivers and programmed to only allow the machines to be operated within specific geographic boundaries. The moment a bulldozer is driven beyond those boundaries its engine is shut down. GPS technology has been used quite effectively to thwart truck thieves—primarily by enabling law enforcement to determine their exact whereabouts—and geo-fencing has been proposed in the U.S. for all trucks carrying hazardous materials, ensuring they only follow permitted routes. An even simpler solution is radio-fencing, widely used to keep dogs from straying outside their yards. In the bulldozer application, a low-power transmitter can be set up at the construction site. The bulldozer’s engine is automatically disabled whenever the machine strays beyond the transmitter’s range. This technology also allows management to manually disable bulldozers during breaks, emergencies, or after hours. The cost of these solutions is easily justified. Bulldozers are expensive mobile assets, and they should be tracked for that reason alone. As we have seen, they can also be used by terrorists to cause numerous casualties and immense property damage. Like all anti-terrorist technologies, these solutions can be circumvented. Terrorists could disable engine shut-down circuits. Or they could develop gadgets that fool the system by generating false signals. But there are numerous ways to make this very difficult. At some point, the terrorists will give up on bulldozers, and look for other opportunities to ply their murderous and destructive trade."
10. To #1 & 4
Chaim ,   Tzur Hadassa   (07.24.08)
Thank you for your talkbacks. I have often spoke the very words you have both said. As a former US citizen, I too was raised with weapons of all types. How shocked I was to find that I couldn't bring my .45 cal. ACP to a country at war and terrorist lurking on every street corner. However, loving my home, I came here unarmed, hoping to obtain a handgun under Israeli law. Surprise, surprise. So here I sit reading that you now can defend yourself from a burglar, but you can't own a hand gun. Wait for the police. Can someone tell me where were the IDF and police were when the father was murdered before his little daughter and her head smashed by the one who had a weapon and is now being hailed as a hero?
11. would you better have overall chaos or limited terror?
observer   (07.24.08)
12. Avoiding the issue ....
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (07.24.08)
The issue is why do E. Jerusalem Arabs have Israeli ID's? It was a mistaken policy, possibly well-intentioned, but a mistake nonetheless. I'm not buying the "isolated incidents" theory - partially, this is an effort to convince people to divide Jerusalem. Partially, it is the result of an increase in "radicalism" which is apparent in every Muslim population. Mostly, it is the result of not enforcing even existing laws, of always showing weakness, of no police presence in Arab areas, & an inability to expel known trouble-makers. While it is certainly lucky that we have courageous citizens who are armed & able to react to terror incidents, this is most definitely not the job of ordinary civilians. If the police are deficient in carrying out their duties, then it is the police who need reform. Maybe replacing political hacks with professional leadership in the police would be a first step. But the main issue remains that of Israeli ID's for a hostile enemy population.
13. Destruction of Israel
Eli ,   Tel Aviv   (07.24.08)
Something is very wrong with the system... You cannot even testify against the burglar, if you do he will come after you and your family because the police is obliging you to confront him and after tells you that he cannot protect you !!! If you catch the burglar he will pursue you in court an get probably "pitsuim" because our "humanist system" will consider him as the victim !!! The "Dromi" law should be voted since 1948 and give us the feeling that we are protected in our home and country. But no... instead we gave all the liberties to the "bad" guys and the system obliged us to live in "protected houses" which from the outside likes a prison with "soragim, alarms, etc" everywhere. The humanist system forced us to live in our little prisons like it was in the "gettos". Now in a so well build "humanist" system how do you want to protect yourself from terrorists if even you cannot protect yourself from burglars. As per the declaration of Micky Levy... We are humanist and we have to let the terrorist kill the maximum of Jews, and not kill him... It is ok for him... He is probably making he's way to the knesset forgetting from where he is coming... Like that the system transformed the police to puppets without any authority... They even took of siren's and mikes from civil guard police volunteer cars because they fear that somebody will do the job instead of them.... If the civil guard is going to strike "shivita" for only 1 week will see what will be... I would like to see the "falafel collectioners" to drive patrol cars and tell to the "bad" guys "nununu it is not ok what you do... we are humanist"... Instead of telling you have 24 hours to send them back intact or we'll take actions, today this "humanist" system is allowing the terrorists to give back our soldiers in plastic bags… They (burglars, terrorists and all the "bad guys") are laughing to us... This is leading to the destruction of our country. Wait and see. After all we are "humanist" !!!
14. Stopping the bulldozers
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (07.24.08)
Simply assign a cop to every building site.
15. A tricycle maybe, but a bulldozer.....
charlot   (07.24.08)
Well armed civilians would have stopped ALL kassams on Sderot a long time ago. ONE kassam = 10 rockets fired back. Would have stopped also ALL arab attacks in Israel. One caught, a bullet in the head. Would have stopped ALL car thieves by checking arab garages. once caught, blow-up the whole building t'il none left. And would have stopped ALL stoning & other attacks. One such incident and 10 of THEIR cars crushed the same day at random - 2nd attack, double the amount t'il no cars left Unfortunately, our unglorious Jewish leaders have their own agenda. Olmert likes expensive watches, cigars, $$5000.00 a night at the Waldorf in NYC, and being sure that his wife gets ONE million for " expenses--it's all in the family His long time "buddy" the former Finance Minister, was too busy financing himself, his family, his friends.---Mr. Mofaz, another disgrace in our Govt., is able to show that under his watch, about 600 Israelis dead/wounded on the road (same period, Hamas managed to get less than a handful during the same period) The IDF, the Police, the courts, NOTHING to bragg about it. How the hell can this Govt. stop a bulldozer, it is too busy traveling 1st class all over the world.. " JUNKETS " is the correct US name...
16. Response to some talkbaks
yerushalmi ,   jerusalem   (07.24.08)
#7 jews, contractors hire arabs because they are prepared to work for less then minimal wage, because of their greed. Arabs can do that since they don't pay taxes, but in the long run, israeli economy only benefited from not hiring arabs from gaza, only positive side of disengagement #11 what is the difference between granting a license for a IDF reservist to carry a handgun 24/7 and giving him a M-16 for a month a year? We have a citizen army, so let's arm citizen soldiers 24/7. Not everybody would use that right, but enough people would. This can be expanded into a new branch of mishmar ezrachi, for those immigrants that made aliya when they were too old for IDF service, if they want a gun, they can join mishmar ezrachi. I am not saying that we need to develop a shooter culture like they have in US, just give licenses to those who carry an assult rifle when they serve anyway, in miluim, or in mishmar ezrachi.
17. agree with haber
alexi   (07.24.08)
Israelis load your guns and keep the ready and take them with you always. Beyond winograd, the problem is not friends. IDF always adapts its strategy. Olmert would not let them." What would US think of it? Then later he sends troops but not enough. Later he runs to the UN and the US for a ceasefire. Finally he calls it a win. israelis-do you see how why the hezbollah war was lost!olmert is a disaster, forget about talanksy shmalansky. No one died from talansky. I know olmert is a liar and small time hood. What is surprising is why professors at hebrew U think he is talented. He's good with words but he is a moron on a practical leve.
18. A MUCH better solution...
Best Practices ,   Israel & USA   (07.24.08)
Construction vehicles MUST ride on flatbed carriers, like in the civilized world. Israel has allowed construction and farm vehicles on the passenger roadways for FAR too long. Workers use the vehicles to commute to work, allegedly because they will be stolen from jobsites. Israelis are great at passing laws. This is one that might work, provided that the flatbed companies are allowed to operate in freemarket, rather than cartel or monopoly.
19. Israel was busy promoting the "bulldozer" after 1948
observer   (07.24.08)
to the extent that it didn't have time to invent a stopping mechanism.
20. Revoke driving license
Shimshon ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (07.24.08)
They should all have their driving license taken away - This would them probably make complain at the UN and they would happily make an other anti Israel resolution, but it would make it easier to stop them.
21. Which bulldozers? Arab or IDF?
Adam Eliyahu Berkowi   (07.25.08)
Isn't ironic that the arabs are using bulldozers to kill Jews and the IDF is gearing up for another round of plowing under Jewish communities? But destroying a terrorist's house is probblematic legally. Left wing is a form of mental dysfunction that permits such double talk.
22. Why don't you discuss stopping the bulldozers
GUH   (07.26.08)
that are leaving THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF PALESTINIAN FAMILIES WITHOUT A ROOF? All you can suggest is that people walk around markets and fields wearing weapons capable of causing death as casually as wearing a shirt. Hell, you murdered entire families with these machines (see al-Shubi family) and now you are debating amongst yourselves (after two instances) how to kill any who uses these as disastrously as you do. Hysterical, paranoid, and hostile- three adjectives here.
