33. #28 - David - please be quiet!
Shalom   (08.05.08)
What she keeps is far more than what millions of other Jews do. Each one on their level - the important thing is for a person to keep growing. She obviously is not Hareidi. Perhaps one day, she will decide that this sport is not for her, but until now, she's doing the best she can, with the tools G-d gave her.
34. YNet forgot to mention
Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (08.05.08)
She is an IDF soldier whose service ends on the day she travels to Beijing.
35. David #28, you are a first class idiot
Besalel ,   Kew Gardens, NY   (08.05.08)
First of all, Rav Moshe Fienstein specifically ruled that negiah does not apply to non-intimite touching. Kicking people in the face qualifies. Secondly, even assuming that you believe in a certain level of observance you cannot and should not put down others that have a different level of observance. She is shomeret shabbat, how dare you minimize that, you fool? She eats kosher, how dare you make that nothing? We all fail in certain things. Some for pride, some for money, some for desire. Do you do everything perfect? Now that you have pointed out her imperfections would you like gd to examine yours? Fool.
36. # 28 David
Marty ,   USA   (08.05.08)
Either you are faking being a religious Jew or you are ignorant of the whole basis of the law, which is built on a tolerance for the different genuine interpretations of the law. Teiku.
37. You go girl!!!!
Anne ,   Oslo, Norway   (08.05.08)
I'm 15 year old gymanist. I love Israel (been there twice) What a beautiful brave girl with a beautiful name Bat-El bring the Gold home - but whatever you do - millions will be proud of you!

Eliyahu ,   United States   (08.05.08)
Shut up! This is why people hate alot of the religious. Because nothing is ever good enough for you. This girl has a dream and she is doing her best to remain true to the Torah. AND SHE IS REMAINING TRUE. I hope this girl becomes the champion in her sport. And inspires more Jews to pursue their dreams as well as keep the Mitzvot. You however will sit infront of your computer and comment on other people doing great things for the rest of your life. LOSER!
42. #28 A truly religious person.....
Luis ,   United States   (08.05.08)
Would not be speaking Lashon Harah about a fellow Jew.
43. Found: Kosher protein bars for Israeli Olympian Gaterer
Meir Simcha Werblud ,   Seattle, WA, USA   (08.05.08)
I found Rabbi Eidlitz ' list (www.kosherquest.com) of 21 brands of kosher protein & health bars & shakes within 30 seconds of reading this article. Please call (206 721 5350) or email me if the Israeli Olympic team cannot afford to purchase these products for its' shomer kashrut athlete, Gaterer: I will order any of these kosher products to be delivered to her immediately!
44. There more kosher protein bars then others
Antonio ,   Haifa   (08.05.08)
still, I agree with others who said that Israel should arrange kosher food for the Jewish athletes.
45. #28: David, I think you should learn the halacha
Adam Eliyahu Berkowi   (08.05.08)
according to the rambam, the only problematic contact is"derech chiba". Martail arts are pretty far from that. Also, there is absolutey no HALACHIC problem with a woman wearing pants, especially pants that were designed for women. And she went to seminary. I am sure she has a rav.
46. #21:Simon, just any lefty hate monger, and you lie
Adam Eliyahu Berkowi   (08.05.08)
Actually, simon, if you are current in the news, it is the left wing protesters that are throwing rocks at the police and soldiers. Why do hate anything connected to torah?
47. to #28
Michel ,   Jerusalem   (08.05.08)
Who are you to tell who is religious and who isn't ? Let's God decides.. please.. By the way, I'm surprised the Leftists din't protest as she is "Palestinian" and not Israeli !!! Sure some of them will report to the IOC et the Arab countries will protest..
48. But none of the rest keep Kosher or Shabbos
Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (08.05.08)
What sort of representation of the Jewish State is there if (apparently) but only one participant keeps Kosher and the Holy Sabbath? Maybe it is better that way. The Olympics, afterall, is for the Goyim.
49. *************8

50. KOSHER FOOD

51. To #s 30, 33, 36, 41, 42, 45, 47
David ,   Jerusalem   (08.06.08)
Why don't you show the same lenience to homosexual religious Jews? They keep the mitzvot in "their interpretation" and "as best as they can" too, don't they? The fact is that you are hypocrites, while I speak the truth, and I am not ashamed of that. You either accept the Torah, or you do not accept it. You cannot accept only the parts that suit you.
52. to #s 51 and 28 (David)
Mark ,   Jerusalem   (08.06.08)
Be happy that she keeps Shabbat and Kosher and other mitzvot and don't bring up homosexuality into this. Jews like you make problems between the religious and the secular. Instead write a letter to those Arabs you have made remarks on here. And if a homosexual wants to keep Shabbat, Kosher and mizvot good luch to him.
53. to # 16, 78% of Jordan is Palestine
Mark ,   Jerusalem   (08.06.08)
She is not the thief here you are. Get your story straight, 78% of Jordan belongs to Palestine. And if the Final is on Shabbat does not mean that she breaks Shabbat ,so Marwan get your facts straight.
54. To #51 - Well said! But who gave you the right to judge?
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (08.06.08)
Regrettably, both the religious and the secular there is not end to bigotry! Live and let live should be the watchword but some just won't let that happen and it is a shame that the "champions" of freedom and liberty in Israel, Meretz, also support those who are trying their very best to destroy our land and subjugate the world under Islamic Fundamentalism. So, if a person wants to participate in a sport and also chooses to be religious that his his or her business and the rest should look on with pride at ALL our athletes going to represent OUR country at the Games which I call the Games of Shame!
55. Ariel # 9

If keeping Shabbat and kashrut can bring success , why is she the ONLY Israeli religious athlete in Bejing ? your TB is only BS [ as all your are ]
56. to # 9
Mark ,   Jerusalem   (08.06.08)
What do you mean when you say " as all you are". I know what BS is but wjat is TB

Reuven Brauner ,   Raanana, Israel   (08.06.08)
Does Chabad serve Rubashkin products?
58. Make us proud girly!
Israel   (08.06.08)
59. David #51, stop embarassing us
Besalel ,   Kew Gardens, NY   (08.06.08)
The religious community asked to have the Gay Pride Parade held somewhere other than Jerusalem because (1) Jerusalem is a holy city and (2) the residents overwhelmingly will be offended by the parade. No one ever judged the moral character of the Gay community and I am sure that among them you will find better people and better Jews than some among even the Bnei Brack community. Once again, I am going to ask you to refrain from judging the "religiousness" of others. In any event, I don't see how you can compare someone who is shomeret shabbat, Kashrut and mitzvot to any other non-observant just because she wears pants when performing. When you say that you just confirm that you are a dunce. There are some Jews, by the way, that will tell you that anyone that has internet access is "not religious."
60. No Kosher Protien Bars?
Marc ,   NY, USA   (08.06.08)
Does China disallow the importation of protien bars or disallow athletes from bringing in their own pre-packaged food? I can name 5 different kosher protien bars that are far healthier than a MSG-laden soup. The article is interesting, but the whole, "all she can eat is soup and she is at a competitive disadvantage because she can't get protien bars that are kosher" is rediculous. I wish her the best of luck...and if her coach is reading this, I would be more than happy to point you in the directiopn of some Kosher protien bars so that a world class athlete will be at her best at the biggest competition of her life.
