1. housing only for the ultra orthadox
if you want to find housing in Jerusalem you need to be part of the ultra orthodox community. Or a rich foreign investor looking for a luxury apartment for the chageem.
Mayor Uri Lupolianski has successfully driven out large numbers of people from Jerusalem, the very people that unlike his pals actually work for a living, pay taxes and serve in the IDF. Jerusalem has become an Ultra Orthdox enclave and seperated its self from main stream Israel and cannot be called the democratic capital of Israel.

2. Everyone everywhere would like cheaper rents ..
I know people in high tech who are finding rents too high in the Tel Aviv area, and Holon and similar places are now so high that people seeking accommodation are having to consider moshav's and sharing as alternatives and of course the price of renting in a moshav will then go up.
I can relate to the students but supply and demand control the prices in a capitalist society and capitalism is cruel.
I share with two other people and my son in LA shares with five other people.

3. How Come?
Clearly this "demonstaration" is a political ploy for the coming municipal elections. Rents in TA are just as high as in Jerusalem but as long as you are bashing a haredi mayor you will be able to get a few dozen protesters and a good deal of publicity in the media.

4. why just young people??
after 14 years, our rent was just raised by a full 35%. in a panic, i searched 'homeless' and 'sheal' web sites for apartments, one room smaller, any neighborhood jerusalem. they are all out of sight! after talking to so many others with same problem, we all decided to 'stay still'. we have an old car. we will sell it. nothing else we can do. we are in our 60s, both work, and barely make enough to pay rent. never could get enough to buy. we are a city of rich only? something is wrong here...
