The reason why it seems such crimes are relatively more common in Western societies such as the US and Israel is probably because they have a free press, and are not afraid to publicize such cases. Words such as rabbi are therefore, - I guess - from ancient times and not modern ones. I'm not a linguist, so I might be wrong, but just do not forget that modern Hebrew carries many ancient Hebrew words.
