Putin has become the richest man in Europe, fleecing his people of some $50 million to fill his Swiss bank accounts. Everything else is the logical outflow of this.

6. Correction: Putin has stolen $50 BILLION
Putin has stolen $50 BILLION dollars from the Russian people, through his ownership of natonal oil and gas interests, and put it into bank accounts in Western Europe. That is the REAL reason for his belligerant actions -- to divert the attention of the Russian public.

This is not about who is more powerful; of course, United States has the military upper hand but, not enough patience. The countries in the middle east have a different understanding of time. When you have 2500-5500 years of memory, you slow down and a 10 year conflict is insignificant.

The current conflict has no comparison possible with all those that preceeded, in the fact that it implcate a milenaristic an dfanatical regime- the Iranian one, owho are ready to to provoke a doomsday scenario for hasting teh return of their 13th imam. This is teh conflict between civilization and barabarity. If Iran get hands on Nuclear weapons, it will get free hand to terrorize and maybe to overtrow the pro western regimes in teh Arabaian peninsula and to replace it by its Shiite goons. Iran therefore has to be stoppe dby all means even, if there are no other alternative, by a preemptive strike. But we will never get enslave dto the Shiite barbric entity ! The shiites can dream on, a strike wills opon deal a fatal blow to their madness and throw them back to teh place their belong to;

You are very angry and it is messing up your point. You are absolutely right--no one wants the religous regime of Iran to rule, even Iran. I believe in the First Amendment and the Separation of the Church and State--to its extreme, remove the name of God from currencies!
I am not godless but, I agree with you that we don't want to spread religone--But this is were we differ and you are wrong.
Attacking Iran would only inflame and help grow the very sentiments that bring about religone and politics. Patience is the solution.

15. Putinism inflaming the world
The peaceful Russian people should find Democrats who could their nation to having peaceful relationship with other countries. Following the path of Putinism will only lead to further world conflagration which is detrimental to the Russian people and the world.
Meanwhile, America needs to review its controversial moves of putting missile batteries in Eastern Europe which is provocative and making the winds of Putinism prevail. Rationale for it is flimsy. Why would America bring Iran into the picture? Iran's missiles would be defanged long before they could be deployed. Russia has also threatened to obliterate such batteries.
The idea of putting such batteries in Poland and other places is foolish. It is making Putin's Russia nervous and trigger a response that the West will regret to see.
Both sides should have wise leaders who could see beyond the cloud of stupidity.
What is needed is to do away with provocative acts that will be miscalculated and will trigger disastrous results.
Rice should be focusing such challenges rather than be pushing the agenda of Islamist-Jihadism on Israel.
Rice's performance is poor. The world is less safe today than before Rice became Bush's Chief Diplomat. With the Russian tiger rising, Rice has failed in dealing with the bigger issues in the world. in the wake of 9/11, why would Bush and Rice be pushing an agenda that is hurting Israel and rewarding the Islamist-Jihadists that are trying to usurp Israel's GOD-Restored liberated biblical and historic homeland of Judea and Samaria and its eternal, indivisible Capital-City of Jerusalem.
It is sad that Bush and Rice have been fooled and manipulated by the forces of AntiSemitism, that is, Papism and Jihadism.
They will be leaving office in 4 months for their successors to face a more challenging world.

18. Russia playing the boomerang game with terrorist states
Russia's policy to help terrorist states like Iran & Syria, is an other example of "la politique du pire".
These stupid short term politics with long term implications often result in a boomerang effect.
Russians should remember the case of the Germans allowing Lenine to cross their country en route from Britain to Russia where they hoped he would cause sufficient havoc to remove the Tsar 's army from WWII eastern front.
What they got in return 30 years later is the Red Army in Berlin & the pemanent loss of some territory.
For Russia, once the Islamist extreme zelots decide to renew their activities in Chechnya & other moslem border states it will get payback just as American got for helping Bin Laden in Afghanistan to fight the past communist regime.

22. Mahmood, Septimus has a point.
The 13th. emam is Khomeini. He was just an Ayatollah until the government types started calling him "Emam". Septimus is certifiable but even in his deep ignorance he is unknowingly right. Sometimes someone who dishes out crap mainly constructed in his/her thick Neanderthal skull, even mistakes can turn out to be correct.

23. THE WORD IMAM..............................#22
Is not used for Imam Khomeini in the same context as is the word Imam used for the 12 Imams.I had no choice but to clarify this.Anyone leading prayers in a congegational prayers is also referred to as an Imam.I hope that clarifies your point.

26. Mahmood, you're mixing up different Imams.
Although this thread has nothing to do with this article, but it is useful as general knowledge. You statement that anyone who leads the prayers in a mosque is called an Imam is not the case at least in Iran among the Iranian Shiehs. There's a specific term for that. Prayer Leader, or peesh namaz in Farsi, is exactly that. Imam may be the prayer leader in some Sunni Mosques or specially the ones in the West. In Iran's Shieh form of Islam the position of Imammat is much higher than something any run-off-the-mill clergy who happens to be a prayer leader can do. I hope this clarifies the point, and I think the main points is Islam is much bigger than can be standardized so easily. And indeed that diversity is the strength of Islam.
