1. Let the Jerusalemites decide?
Israel   (09.14.08)
Of course the Haredim will vote yes. That's not what you'd call democratic - not one country on the planet would even think about letting a convicted criminal run for mayor. I hope it won't here.
2. #1 yes
Israel Israeli ,   Tel Aviv   (09.14.08)
I personally want Barkat elected but that is not the issue. You say that "not one country would let a convicted criminal run for mayor" There is: the same country that allows a convicted Sex Offender to be a Minister and Vice Premier less than a year after his conviction because Sexual Assault has no moral turpitude.
3. # 1 Wrong
Sagi ,   Israel   (09.14.08)
There is one country,its ours.
4. you forgot to mention Deri's support for OSLO which got us
Moshe ,   Beit Shemesh   (09.14.08)
thousands of Jewish casualties. buses and pizza parlors blowing up. people scared to walk out their houses. thanks to PLO-terrorist Arafat imported by Rabin, Peres and YES - YES - Aryeh Deri. WHY DID YOU NOT MENTION OSLO ???
5. Yes Deri , olmert, hirshon fit a profile
Moshe Israel ,   kiryat yuval, Israel   (09.14.08)
Yes Deri fits the same profile as: - PM olmert ( after he is released from prison), - former Minister of Treasury , hirshson ( after he is released from prison for stealing) Ahh..wait there is a difference: - olmert proved his inadequacy in Leb II , but got away free.. -olmert and hirshson, may be theives whereas ....Deri was a criminal and IS a scholar ...he should learn to apply such scholarship to himself .. forgoing all official roles as a politician. Moshe Israel
6. Like a hole in the head, they need that
Eric..... ,   Israel.....   (09.14.08)
crook. He will give all the money too the religious camp and then put some in his pocket.Deri is bad news for Jerusalem and for the country.
7. Deri supported Oslo! That says it all!
JAyyy ,   Israel   (09.14.08)
He sold his soul to the devil years ago.
8. Sagi go away already!!!
Jew   (09.14.08)
I would have thought your constant anti Haredi comments would have faded already. Have you nothing better to do with your life than wait for ynet articles so that you can spill your Haredi hatred. I would have thought your anger and jealousy would have led you down a path that you would have faded away already. Do us a favor sagi, keep the ynet feedbacks clean from you hate and jealousy.
9. To JAyyy #7: Naaah, th Devil wouldn't buy it!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (09.14.08)
The question is not a Jerusalem one. Jerusalem, not my favorite place, is our capital city and is also the Capital of the World! Jerusalem needs a mayor who command respect, is tolerant to all and who will ensure that the city is run with the respect it deserves. The question is where do we find such a person? Maybe Mofaz could suggest one of his union bosses!
10. Deri
Norman Gellman ,   Rehovot. Isreal   (09.14.08)
It is not sugnificant if he would or would not make a good Mayor or what the Jerusalemites want. He still has 1 year left on his sentance that prevents him for running for office, There should be no special cases, He should be made to wait out the full sentance. Norm
11. Deri as a ... bridge between the religious and secular?
M ,   Tel-Aviv   (09.14.08)
Meaning what, taking money from one and giving to other side? Converting? I don't recall him doing anything positive for secular people nor even showing much of understanding of our priorities.
12. I know I know I'm not even an Israeli, but...
INCognito ,   Brooklyn, NY   (09.14.08)
the author actually suggests letting a fox into the chicken coop. Here's someone who actually stole money (whether one chooses to call it theft or embezzlement - it's the same actions - taking money that don't belong to you). And why shouldn't Jerusalem residents decide? Because, it's one thing to serve time and pay money for such an offense, and it's quite another to destroy or damage your credibility...
13. forgive
colin   (09.14.08)
Hanoch Daum says to forgive this crimanil and let him be mayor..HA HA Does Hanoch Daum also say forgive Hitler?????
14. #8
Kim ,   Tel Aviv   (09.14.08)
Jealous? of what? The vile despicable way the Haredim behave? the poverty that they live in because they don't work? The hatred they have for anyone who isn't Haredi? Their techniques for falsifying yeshiva students to get more money from the state? WHAT?? WHAT exactly is there to be jealous about here? HA HA HA HA HA you are so funny!! You are a good form of entertainment.
15. again....the same old faces!
shadoil ,   Jerusalem   (09.14.08)
Why are there never any new faces on the political scene? This crook that crook. Why do these guys feel that a come back is always possible? The fact that Porush wont forgo his ego, and knows he's going to loose but refuses to step aside for someone non-partisan like Lupoliansky who watches out for secular and religious interests equally, allows someone of Deri's ilk to re-enter political life.
16. deri the thief is not embarrassed to
jason white ,   afula,israel   (09.14.08)
show his mug in public? That draft dodging ex con wants to be mayor of Jerusalem? What chutzpah! He and the rest of sh-ass including ayatollah yusuf should be tried for voting for oslo!
17. to #8 You go away!
jason white ,   afula,israel   (09.14.08)
We go to the army and we hate the hara-di draft dodgers! We go to work and pay taxes to support the hara-di and we hate them! We watch as they refuse to stand on Heroes and Martyrs Day and Holocaust Memorial Day and we hated them more than you could believe! If you were a "Jew" as you signed your letter, then you would not defend goyim like the hara-dim!
18. No. 13 Colin
NYC Girl   (09.14.08)
While I certainly wouldn't want to see Aryeh Deri in any public office, I hope you didn't mean to suggest that Deri's crimes in any way begin to approach those of Adolph Hitler.
19. # 8 Jew. Not hate
Sagi ,   Israel   (09.14.08)
Just plain contempt. Parasitical leeches that have nothing whatsoever to do with Judaism. The Galut mentality and lifestyle in the ghettos of Eastern Europe brought a disaster upon our People and those who wish to perpetuate this pitiful way of life will succeed in bringing upon us another disaster. The fall of Bayit Shlishi. A lesson should have been learnt from Europe and this "Haredism" should have become defunct. I shall not go away, I shall stay here on ynet and in my beloved Israel to try and make sure that these strange people do not take over my country the same way that I fought in four wars to stop the Arabs from taking it over. They will not win.
20. We need Deri like we need Katzav
richi ,   Eilat   (09.14.08)
i am sure that all that is said about Deri and his abilities is true.... but if we ever want to have a govt that works for the good of the people we need to make it clear any repsentative (in national or local govt) who breaks the peoples confidence cannot return to any!!!!! seat of power. The attempt to claim being against Deri as Mayor of Jerusalem is based on racial considerations is at best missing the point and at worst a minupalation of truths in order to continue the riegn of self promoting politicians who have little regard for the good of the country .
21. I am with INCognito
Roland ,   Jerusalem Israel   (09.14.08)
Robin Wood is for the movies! In real life it is called GANAV! We don't need Deri
22. #15 you seem to have forgotten something
Simon ,   TA Israel   (09.14.08)
you seem to have forgotten that Deri is an ex con and who will divide the secular religious balance even further. Deri had shown a conflict of interest while serving as interior minister, budgeting NIS 400,000 from his ministry's purse to an organization run by his brother, Rabbi Yehuda Deri. The money was used to purchase a villa in the capital's ultra-Orthodox Har Nof neighborhood. If elected mayor, he may well again use city funds not just as a cash pipeline, but as a gushing faucet for his private use. Bottom line this man can not be trusted. How can an Ex con be mayor of the holy city of Jerusalem, has`nt he ever heard of "thou shalt not steal"? he claims to represent law and order but Instead, he has consistently behaved as if the only authorization that matters is that offered by Ovadia Yosef? Sorry but i think the Isreali public deserves better than this.
23. deri
jerusalem resident ,   jerusalem   (09.14.08)
If a man hits you once, it is his fault. If you let him it you a second time, then you are stupid. Why would anyone give Deri, a thief in the best sense of the word, a second chance to steal? Wouldn't that be very stupid of us, Jerusalem residents?
24. To 8 , Jew [ ? ] take some help
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (09.14.08)
If attacking someone who stole money is attacking the Charidim in your eyes , well , you have two solutions .1] Go to an ophtalmologist , and have an eye check , or 2 ] to a psychiatre for your paranoia . There are Charidim who deserve respect , people who have done and are doing great things for ALL the Israelis . But this is not the case with thiefs .
25. Jerusalem needs Deri
larry ,   zefat israel   (09.14.08)
Like a Hole in the Head.
26. Who is best to keep Jerusalem unified?
Sue ,   Los Angeles   (09.15.08)
Israel must elect leaders who will fight to keep Jerusalem unified. Jerusalem is the heart and soul of Israel and of the Jewish people. The Palestinians and Iran are waiting for the opportunity to move their missiles into East Jerusalem and destroy the Jewish state.
27. This article is ONE BIG LIE OF OMISSION
Daniel ,   Formerly Israel   (09.15.08)
I was going to attack this article on the basis of its absurd claim that a past criminal conviction has no bearing on one's qualification for public office, but that has turned out to be the least of its flaws. Daum juxtiposes Deri's "charisma" with Barakat's "anemia" and says that Deri would be a great mayor for Jerusalem while Barakat is a shallow rich guy. But he conveniently forgets to mention not only Deri's support for Oslo, which others have already pointed out, but also the fact that for a city with a flagging econmy even a Charedi with unimpeachable morals would make a bad mayor, and Deri is far from morally unimpeachable. He also forgets that Deri supports gay pride parades and generally sneers at traditional zionism, which is acceptable in Tel-Aviv but cannot be permitted in Jerusalem simply because Jerusalem is far more than Israel's capital, it is the country's heart and soul, and that Mr. Daum is why people who don't live in Jerusalem feel they have a stake in who becomes the cities mayor. That having been said it should be left up to Jerusalem's residents to decide who their mayor will be, but if they all share your short memory, poor forsight, and lack of understanding of the city's symbolic value then Azohen Vei
28. #18 NY
colin   (09.15.08)
His crimes are equal to every criminal Why promote leniency to a criminal who takes from the poor and from children under the pretence of religion for his own pocket.and got caught and sentenced.
29. Daum, Dori, and decent citizen
chop-chop   (09.15.08)
Would you let a convicted pedophile (now free) work with children? Would you let a convicted jewel thief (now free) work in a jewlry store? Would you let Hirshson (after his debt to society is paid) run our finances again? Would you let members of the " moral watch " gang, paid by Haredims ( the only real believers )to break bones of other jews, join the Police force? Mr. Hanosh Daum, you should have your head examined by a doctor ,outside Jerusalem
30. Oh, BOO HOO! So you're scared of Barkat?
Yaakov K. ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (09.16.08)
Too bad. We've had enough of crooks, convicted and otherwise, and we've had more than enough of mayors promoting one segment of the population over others. Yaakov K., Dati in Yerushalayim for Barkat
