1. View from the Univ's Synagogue
Charles ,   Petach Tikva   (10.08.08)
A great panorama . Sad to say that some of the buildings we can see were better situated in other places than Yeroushalaim
2. glaring omission
Gedalia ,   Australia   (10.08.08)
There is an old Shul in Gadera that has to be one of the most beautiful in Israel. And nothing beats the view from the window of the Shule in Gefen, Efrat.
3. Mazkeret batya
Phoenix ,   Israel   (10.08.08)
The Syanagogue of Mazkeret Batya looks just like a bloody christian church. They shoul redisign it.
4. 10 most beautiful synagogues
Serge ,   Paris, France   (10.08.08)
Although not orthodox, I am surprised to not see any orthodox schule? Weird no! What about the huge and amazing Belz one in Jerusalem? Shana Tova. S.
5. A much nicer selection of synagogues
Talula ,   Israel   (10.08.08)
with the exception of Ohel Aharon, Haifa - that just looks like an airport terminal outbuilding and the Central Synagogue, Nazareth - that looks like some sort of extraterrestrial space craft - apart from that, very nice. I would be happy to go and repent my sins in any of them.
6. Synagogues are NOT temples!
Antonio ,   Haifa   (10.08.08)
7. It's not the building-it's the people who worship G-d
M ,   Toronto   (10.08.08)
We have wonderful synagogue renowned in all Toronto, with many rabbis who admire it, but .... it's not in a Corbusier style designed building, it's in a rented space in a public school. What's the importance of having a great big building with no history? Judaism since the Temple is not recognized by its beautiful buildings, but by the Tora the people learn in this synagogue.
8. When words lose their meaning, society collapses.
Nick Sporek ,   Jerusalem Israel   (10.08.08)
A Temple is not the same thing as a synagogue.
9. Sorry, but #7 is not that beautiful
Reader ,   USA   (10.09.08)
at least not on the outside... Maybe should have given an inside shot.
10. #6, #8: Plesae Explain
emanon ,   USA   (10.08.08)
I know of many Jewish congregations called "Temple Emmanuel". They all offer Jewish services, so I am at a loss to understand your statement. If I am mistaken, please educate those of us that do not understand your statement.
11. To Antonio and Nick: Temples vs. Synagogues
Geraldo ,   Mason City   (10.09.08)
Language developed this way because in Spanish the word Templo is used for any kind of religious structure used for worship, and since Spanish is one of the principal languages Jews used to communicate over the last 500 years, well there you have it.
12. #3 - What a stupid comment!
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (10.08.08)
It looks exactly like thousands of old synagogues in europe that the nazis destroyed. Classic two collums/towers on the side with domes.
13. synagogues
alan ,   texaS   (10.08.08)
Jews build people. let others build buildings.
14. What is proper?
David ,   USA   (10.09.08)
Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the word "Shul" is Yiddish and the word "Synagogue" is Greek. What would be the proper "Ivri" name for this building?
15. #6 you are right
Lutfi Altinel ,   Orhangazi,Turkey   (10.08.08)

Well, if you don't like the view at the Hebrew U synagogue, you just need to go sit upstairs in the women's section. Because of the height of the gallery compared to the height of the main windows, we can't see anything - the angle lets us see just a few of the arab houses, and none of the beautiful old city views. I am too upset by this to even go and pray there.

well of you go then-let us know when you've been
18. #14
Maidel   (10.10.08)
The word would be "Beit Knesset"
19. #16 - how sad....
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (10.10.08)
the designers of that sanctuary did not take womens' spirituality into account at all did they? Sweeping inspirational views for the men - crappy views for the women.

Thank you.
21. Beautiful synagogues
Sandra Myers ,   Bethesda MD USA   (10.11.08)
Amazing that none of the 15 most beautiful synagogues in Israel are all orthodox and supported with state funds. In fact, many of them have women's galleries which are on the second level and are have limited accessibility for women with mobility problems. Are there no reform or conservative buildings worthy of your notice? No wonder so many spend the holidays at the beach or camping.
22. most beautiful synagogues
toni somerstein ,   east hampton, ny usa   (09.23.15)
you should include the jewish center of the hamptons, designed by norman jaffe.
