32. #22 Jane
When did that occur? Are you referring to the War of Independence when Arab armies and militias attacked Israel expecting to cause a blood bath but ran away in defeat? Hamas and Fatah are most definitely responsible for the plight of the Palestinians. The Arab world is also to blame for not helping their Arab/Muslim brothers and sisters.

33. Jane#24
Of course you don't remember. In fact nobody REALLY remembers "when European colonialists came to Palestine and evicted the local population, razed their villages to the ground and massacred thousands of them in the process. "
The reason nobody remembers is that these things never happened. The Palestinian nakba as well as the Palestinian people were INVENTED as a tool to destroy the Jewish people and the State of Israel.
However, Hamas is to blame for the current situation in Gaza because they were democratically voted into office by the Gazans. The Hamas charter does not recognize the existance of the State of Israel and this terrorist organization is waging war against Israel.
It's as simple as that.

35. Dear Jane ...
Jane said: I don't remember Hamas being around when European colonialists came t
o Palestine and evicted the local population, razed their villages to the ground and massacred thousands of them in the process.
The Jews came from all over the world (not just Europe), to join their brothers and sisters already in the land, and they did not evict the population but rather purchased land which the locals sold to them. Other parts of the land were uninhabited and barren, which the Jews have built and turned it into a flourishing agricultural and economic oasis. Further, with 20% of Israel's population being Arab (represented in the Knesset), I would hardly call that eviction, but inclusion. With the Jewish withdrawal from Gaza under Sharon's plan, we rather saw the self-eviction of Jews from Gaza, which was sadly rewarded with more terrorism from Hamas. Hamas has vastly harmed the cause of their own people, and we know why, because they don't care about them, except to use them and their suffering as pawns (which Hamas caused) for propaganda warfare. As for massacring, there have been massacres by both sides in their long and tortured conflict---just as the Allies also caused justifiable massacres during World War II against a vicious enemy.
If a people vote for a leadership that wants to wipe Israel off the map then that must mean that they are ready to face the brunt of the consequences of their beliefs and actions---which is usually death and casualties. Jane, you can't expect to suffer no pain if you threaten and attack someone else---you leave yourself in no position to protest retaliation emanating from your action. Big contrast between the Hamasians and the Abbassians, which is a relevant case in point to your question (at least at this point of their history).
Jane said: How is hamas to blame for the plight of the Palestinians?
Because, Jane, it is Hamas that is firing these rockets into Israel so as to aggravate it into retaliation, which in turn adversely affects the Gazans. It seems pretty clear that for Hamas it is not really the people that matter but its charter and religious-political beliefs that supersede its people whose sole purpose is to be used as subject slaves for its ideology (and raising them in recycling schools of hatred and uneducated fanaticism).

36. maguire
obviously, her hamas friends didn't show maguire the qassams with which they strive for "peace" with israel, or the ugly side of their children's television programming, which teaches schoolchildren to kill jews.
"action aganst israel"? as a country whose civilians are being targeted, israel has every right of self-defence against the islamist war criminals running gaza. and if maguire doesn't like the consequences, perhaps she can prevail upon her hosts to stop trying to "eliminate israel".
i'm sure her attitude would change if her home and family were on the receiving end of 100+ rockets a week, under a so-called "ceasefire".

37. Throughout history the Jews have been kick out of their....
....countries, whether it was europe, russia, etc., but they always seem to rebuild and reestablish quickly. If the Jewish settlers in Gaza were able to farm and build, why is it taking the palis so damn long. I'm sick of the Arab propaganda. Hey Arabs, give us a hand at peace. Love, a Jew.

38. HAMAS should send Maguire to one of it's Summer Camps
so she can further assist the Palestinians in making a mockery of the Nobel Prize by appealing for sympathy while, encouraging, preparing & motivating their children to die killing the Jews.

39. Mairead Maguire
I am miffed that a woman with supposedly so much intelligence is so one-sided and does not see what hamas is doing to Israel by exploding over 100 rockets into Israel and digging tunnels to kidnap Israelis. Is she so blind or just anti Israel/

40. TO # 7: So true, UNRWA keeps the refugee problem alive
The Palestinian refugee problem is the only one that after 60 years is still alive, kicking and expanding like cancer.
Everywhere in the world millions of refugee's were uprooted, driven out from their homes and relocated and I am talking only over a period of the last 63 years since end WWII!
None of those Europeans who had to leave their homeland and move to other countries with which they only shared a common language and culture (Sudeten Germans in Czech republic f.i.) are today considered refugees, let alone live in refugee camps and live on UN welfare.
It is obvious that the Arab countries were very keen to keep the refugees in camps and did everything to obstruct any solution to the problem.
So very wise they were!!
It is appalling that an organization that should bring peace to the world is actually part of the cause that there is no peace here and that they make things even worse by taking sides.
Yes, being an "occupier" does not go well in post WWII Europe, but those Europeans make it also impossible for us to get out and leave it to the Hamas and other extremists to create a hostile entity in our backyard without any restrictions. No one can supply guarantees to Israel that no harm will come to us.
Only we, Israel, as sovereign entity will be responsible for the security of its citizens and nobody else.

41. Maguire & the UN
Israel should withdraw from the UN as should the United States which should also kick the UN out of NewYork because the UN is a racist anti semetic organization and ineffectual as well.
The UN ignores Arab terrorism in Somalia,Dafur,Ethopia,Phillipeans, and other countries it ignored Russia's attack in Georgia,it ignored the killings under Sadam,it ignores the killings under Ahmadinejad, the Un is useless, out dated and one sided. It condemns Israel for its response to the Rocket fire hitting the residents of Sderot and ashkelon, but never condemns the Hamas Terrorist organization for sending those rockets, or for not allowing the Palestinians people to build homes and farm the land that was returned to them.
I amsick and tired of hearing how one sided the UN is, so come on America throw the bums out they probably owe alot of back taxes and other fees for the UN building anyway!

42. Israel has the duty to defend herself.
Israel is the legal, independent state established in 1948 and recognized by the UN. Israel possesses a legal army that defends the Israeli people. And as a result of these two facts: Israel has the right to act to defend herself in removing existential threats to its existence. The recent lull in violence cannot be used to enhance Hamas’ position by legitimating their despicable actions. Until the terror has ceased, the unrelenting persecution of those committing the attacks must go on. This execution of anti-terror policy must once again extend to Hamas’ leadership. 43. blinding Israeli media over the confiscated fishing boats
The three Human Rights Observers, Andrew Muncie of Scotland, Darlene Wallach of the U.S., and Vik Arrigoni of Italy are currently in prison awaiting court dates. They are challenging their illegal detention and insisting that Israel release them back to Gaza.
Israel abducted and later released 15 Palestinian fishermen during the incident, and confiscated their fishing boats. The HROs are refusing to be deported, and refusing to eat, until the boats are returned--undamaged--to their rightful owners in Gaza.
At court, HRO Andrew Muncie asked the judge under what law they had been arrested. According to the judge, their detention was authorized by the Oslo Accords "because it is forbidden by military law for you to fish 7 and a half miles off the coast. It is a no-fishing zone." However, the Oslo accords grant Palestinians the right to fish 20 miles off their own coast. When Andrew's attorney handed a copy of that portion of the Oslo accords to the judge, she had no comment.

44. 37 kicked out or gheotized in your own country
The illegal occupation denies the Palestinians basic human rights and in addition, sabotage/ uproot their olive trees. Denies them access to markets for the food they actually managed to harvest. Shoot up their fishing vessels, thus preventing them from fishing for a living. Murder/trial by missiles etc. These are just the deliberate actions of the perpetrators caught on cameras. Before the cameras, the jewish denials would be fierce and furious that the Palestinians were lying, now the cameras beams daily occurrences into our living rooms so we see who the liars really are.
Occupiers of Palestine will also get kicked out for the same reason they got turfed out of every country they ever settled in because they are the harbinger of strife, conflicts and wars.

45. 42 Israel does not have a right on someone else's land
Hilarious how you cite the UN yet ignore the numerous other UN recommendation i.e. 242. Your army/air force couldn't get on top of a ragtag army of Hizbullahs after 37days despite the tacit approval of GWB and your wanton bombing of Lebanon. Hizbullah fought you to a standstill and your unfortunate Gilad is still their prisoner. Talk peace.

46. Propaganda and celebrities; a very dangerous mixture...
Propaganda is a very powerful weapon in the hands of celebrities.
They have access to all the media, their "messages" have weight as thousands will accept blindly what they say just because of what they are and nobody will cut them to their natural seize when they misuse their power.
Whatever this woman has achieved years back in her own backyard was based on personal and intimate knowledge of the issues at hand in N. Ireland. Nobody argues about that.
But that should not give her (in the person of a Nobel laureate having enormous influence) any rights to ventilate her own private opinion about a situation thousands of miles away from her home she obviously has no knowledge about.
Her opinion is as good as that of Mrs. Slowcombe or Mr. Lucas about the monetary system of the Bank of England and its inner workings.
It is no wonder that the most vicious, even antisemitic attacks against Israel originate from the UK.
A country that crowns the top of anti-Israel attitude of all western countries.
Those mad dogs and Englishmen indeed walked too long in the midday sun without proper head ware. It really shows.

47. To our Government: Time to act! It's 5 to 12, Wake Up!!
Our governments (including all previous ones too) always have been indulged in deceiving themselves.
They still believe and act according to BG's words: "it's not important what the gentiles say, it's important what the Jews do" and "Um-Shmum", which at that time when BG used them, had some value.
This is not the case anymore for a long time.
Even if all those gentiles were naive and good people with best intentions at heart, they cannot encompass all the intricacies of the conflict. And foremost, do not have to pay the consequences of their actions. We do because we live here.
But if enough people in the world would turn against us, we would become so isolated that we even might lose what the world of today thinks we are still entitled to: the territories within the green line of 1967.
If our government does not start with a worldwide campaign that mobilizes all Jews in the world (prominent business people, celebrities, diplomats, politicians, scientists, Nobel laureates, etc.) and begin to do some serious lobbying, advertising, goodwill creation and yes, even blatant propaganda, our children and grandchildren might not have anything to fight about.
If a rather handful of dedicated Palestinians could achieve so much with so little, then it only proofs the size of the vacuum we created.

UN Resolution 242 doesn't even mention the Palestinians. Further, the land never belonged to the Palestinians. It's not Arab land. Hizbullah started yet another war of aggression by the Arabs and you sound proud of the destruction they caused.
