31. Should Israel Help Them?
Lawrence ,   zefat Israel   (11.26.08)
Hell no .Go help Gilad Shalit,a more deserving case.
32. Tough
Shimon ,   Cincinnati, USA   (11.26.08)
If they were justly convicted, they they'll be punished according to the laws of the jurisdiction they perpetrated the offence in. Whether they knew or didn't know the results or the law involved it has no bearing. Israel should fulfill the responsibility it has towards any citizen (presuming they are) abroad. If they were justly convicted, adios. No big loss. If not, action is justified.
33. ISraeli intellectual ignorance
Seth J. Frantzman ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (11.26.08)
Eitan Haber expresses the ignorance that is all to common here when he claims "only in Israel." In fact most western states, such as the UK, ruitinely intervene to help their citizens. The U.S has intervened to stop its citizens being caned in Singapore. So has Canada and Australia. Mr. Haber is just ignorant and lacks any knowledge on this subject. He and Ynet should be ashamed for this article.
34. #2: You mean kinda like there are no alcohol-related crimes?
Global Citizen ,   Israel & USA   (11.26.08)
35. DRUG DEALERS
ZVI ,   ZJERUSALEM iSRAEL   (11.26.08)
DEAR GOVERNMENT PLEASE LET THEM RUT IN JAIL. ISRAELI SOCIETY DOES NOT OWE A DAMN THING TO PEOPLE THAT DO NOT RESPECT THE LIFE OF OTHERS IF THE SENTENCE IS CARRIED OUT' OTHER DRUG CRIMINALS WILL THINK TWICE BEFORE THEY PUT MY CHILDREN (AND THEIR CHILDREN) IN MORTAL RISK. ONLY BY TAKING A TOUGH STAND ON THIS WE MAY SAVE A FEW SOULS
36. The price of losing one's moral compass
Gideon Reader   (11.26.08)
Prisoner#23 Of course it "costs something". It sends a clear and unambigious message to other entrepreneurs of the trade(dope smuggling)that the state(such as it is) stands behind them and will try to get them released or have strict/harsh punishment softened or done away with. Rather the message that if you do the crime be prepared to do the time or dance at the end of a rope, or whatever. The government of Israel lets it's sons rot in the hoosegow for failure to enjoin in serious efforts to get them free, and plays kissy face on behalf of purveyors of death. Yes. It costs something.
37. DEATH TO THE DRUG DEALERS
George ,   Cyprus   (11.26.08)
Dear Mr Eitan, I do not know if you have children or grandchildren. Let me tell you something. In Cyprus 15 years ago we did not know what drugs mean. Now, one young person is dying every week because of drugs and thousands of families are living like jombies because there loved ones, fathers, children, brothers etc are addicted into drugs. I find it disgusting just to think that the government of Israel may ask to bring those criminals who sell death (drugs) for money back home...and to do what with them? Have the Israeli taxpayer pay his taxes to feed, guard and give shelter to these animals who sell death? Because they are Israelis? So What? Criminals who sell death are criminals irrespective of their nationality. I would be the happiest person if they execute or hang or burn the first Cypriot drug dealer instead of putting them in the hotels (jails) and let them free in a couple of years to give poison to our children.
38. Bali Nine
mordi ,   sydney   (11.26.08)
Have you ever heard of the Bali nine? THey are a group of nine australians currently in Bali, some of them on death row for drug dealing. THe Australian government has tried to plead clemency from the Indonessian President, fro the lives of these dealers. And yes ther e is alot of critisisim from the familys o fthe dealers towards the Australian Government that they have not done enough to save them. So this article is written on the basis of a false premiss.
39. I Have Mixed Feelings
Lawrence ,   zefat Israel   (11.26.08)
Perhaps Israel should help if it can.Whether they deserve it is debatable, they need to seriously do teshuva ,not in any religious sense but to completely change their lives,IF they ever get a second chance. The thought of them ever returning to their evil ways is not a happy one. This also does not reflect well on Israel, in other words these two drug Dealers have brought shame to their country.
40. NOT ONLY in Israel!!!
Michael ,   Australia   (11.26.08)
It is ludicrous to say that only Israelis who face execution on drugs charges expect their government to help get the death sentence commuted to jail time. Australia, the USA, Canada, and countless other states have done the same. Sometimes they have succeeded. Israelis may expect more help from their government than other travellers, but to say "let them be hanged by teh Thais" is just disgusting.
41. jEwish drug dealers
A. nONYMOS   (11.26.08)
the rest of the world isn't jewish, nor are they merciful - this sux - especially for them - on the other hand - they knew the risks when they got into the business - and you wonder why moshiach isnt here
42. LET MY PEOPLE GO NOW!!!!!!
dp   (11.26.08)
thailand is super corrupt
43. No -Israelis abroad dont just do the Hora&sing Jerush Zahav
Alan ,   SA   (11.26.08)
44. Not true, Australia also
Debbie ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (11.26.08)
Not true. Plenty of countries lobby for their citizens rights. Italy does it, so does Australia. Especially when the home country doesn't use the death penalty as a punishment. Israel should do everything to ensure the lives of its citizens, and try to help these two men, however it can.
45. completely ridiculous
darn   (11.26.08)
Typical of this publication: Slam Israel for being the way it is while making an unwarranted claim/comparison, then completely renegging and absolving the issue at the end. This is bogus writing. All over the world, not only in Israel, do liberal compassionate nations make efforts to save their citizens. Does Israel execute drug dealers? I dont believe so. They should be set to Israel and serve some jail time. Let their own people try to save their souls and reform them at home.
46. ?
i ,   jerusalem   (11.26.08)
Bring them home so they can sell drugs here?
47. Missing The Point
David ,   Jerusalem   (11.26.08)
Is it the author's intent to suggest the death penalty is an appropriate penalty for dealing drugs? If so, then I can see the point he's trying to make. If not, he's missing the point. Whether or not the foreign ministry steps in should be based on whether we believe the sentence is proportionate to the wrong doing. Most cultures reject the death penalty for garden variety criminal offenses, including drug dealing. Israel rejects it for just about everything these days. The only way we can be consistent is to make the request to reduce the sentence. So tell me bright guy who writes for the news: do you believe the death penalty is apropos for drug dealing?
48. I have no sympathy for drug dealers.
Rich ,   Toronto, Canada   (11.26.08)
They are killing other people, and deserve what they get.
49. Should Israel help them?
A Jerusalemite ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (11.26.08)
This is a poorly written article. How can one compare drug dealers with an adventurous young person that over-stepped their capabilities? Drug dealers are criminals of the worst kind. We owe them nothing.Let them hang and good riddance to garbage. That is NOT the same as attemting to save a youngster that loves adventure but has not yet developed a sufficient sense of danger. No comparison.
50. author muddles about with inane thoughts
izzy d   (11.26.08)
that only serve to confuse and distract from the real issue at hand. The author is constructing an elaborate fantasy that views the world as circling around Israel (as most israelis are wont to do). My point is that here we have a case where Israeli citizens are in trouble (FOR WTVR REASON) in (WHEREVER) and they are therefore obligated to identify and resolve the issue as fast as possible. this is the obligation of the state for the individual. The author proceeds to flavor a straight froward story with the shocking revelation that these citizens in question are in fact facing the death penalty, leading to intense and emotional pressure from the family's on the government for a happy ending. ok fine sounds reasonable, so why do you need to describe this common sequence of events as uniquely israeli (this is where i get uncomfortable) and then use this as a pedestal for 8 paragraphs of lousy second rate journalism?? Because they are drug smugglers you would deprive them of their rights. my problem is that - short sighted emotional bursts of thinking such as this creates a cesspool of inane, inconsequential and ultimately unnecessary cluttering of that that is and could be legislative policy in my government. never will Israel not respond immediately and with - idf style - precision to the plight of one of its citizens and , i would hope to any jew where ever he may be. perhaps if they were to face a stiff fine or an acceptable amount of jail time then your words would take on more meaning...butr SHAME ON YOU SIR, for advocating any hesitation in the immediate extraction of those to men either by diplomatic means of by force -sayeret matkal style- that they were engaging in the despicable trade of illegal drugs in a geographic "stupid place to do it" - must be dealt with diplomatically once they are safe. sorry for the rant peeps
51. i am so ashamed by these responses
adam ,   israel   (11.26.08)
These responses are so disgusting. And I shall tell you all why 1)The Thai Justice System has not always been right. There has been past cases many of them thoroughly documented where the Thai have wrongly punishes and sentenced to death quite possibly innocent foreigners. Not only is this fact true, it is known that the real drug criminals have a habit of smuggling drugs by duping the innocent or sneaking things into their bags. 2)The tone in these talkbacks are emotionless and heartless. They are written with contempt and with an air of 'moral superiority'. Anyone who knows anything about the drug trade know there is an equal argument that the drug problem can only be solved by ending the demand side of the equation and not the supply. So unlike you all who have joined the counsils of accusations, while taking your own choice of drugs, I realize that these two lives are worth fighting for. 3)Finally, the tone of these talkbacks is the tone of every article:negative. Every talk back is critical whether it is of the government or the national soccer team. Nothing is optimistic or kind from you all. But like Martin Luther King Jr said 'We shall overcome" but we, the true Zionists, the ones who live here and hope, will not reap what you sow. We shall transcend your negativity and finger pointing. Lets hope Livni can save these lives. Shame on all of you who are negative. And for those who arent, lets begin a new Zionist political movement based on POSITIVE ZIONISM.
52. Incorrect usage
(11.26.08)
Either it's unique or not. It's never "very" unique.
53. drugdealers and gallows
kukila ,   Melbourne, Australia   (11.26.08)
Not only in Israel. Australians also expect their government to intervene to save drugdealers condemned to hang in foreign lands.
54. One Cannot Be Wrong AND Strong.
Lawrence ,   zefat Israel   (11.26.08)
What Hutzpah of the Israelis to think they can go where they like and break the law and be rescued by their Government.
55. ...and to the children that died from those pills?!
Josh   (11.27.08)
What would Moses do. It is righteousness they pay the penalty. Anyone who respects God respect the life he gave them. Anyone who disrespects God, their life and harms children for profit has made a grevious sin. This land is in some serious need of a reality check about being a good person and a brothers keeper. Light of the nations shine in righteousness.
56. He Who Is Merciful To The Cruel
Lawrence ,   zefat Israel   (11.27.08)
Will end up being cruel to the merciful.
57. What Do You Call 100 Israeli Drug
Lawrence ,   zefat Israel   (11.27.08)
Dealers at the bottom of the ocean? A jolly good start.
58. Haber is right
Frank ,   Canada   (11.27.08)
These 2 guys knew that Thailand kills drug dealers. They made the wrong decision in the wrong country. Serve them right. Who cares of 2 ugly criminals anyway.
59. To #1: you are wrong
Frank ,   Canada   (11.27.08)
Thanks to PM Harper, Canada does not lobby anymore democratic countries to release criminals. Moreover, who cares of other countries, Israel is a new country and must define her policies according to Jewish values and Israeli experimentations.
60. Re: i am so ashamed by these responses
Josh   (11.27.08)
Enough of the brainwash guilt trip. Individuals are speaking their mind and have no need to conform to the idea that they shame Jews as a group. Some commiting aren't even part of a group. Moses would be proud of many of the righteous comments made. Are you ashamed of that?
